This is a great series with fab narration. I've listened to it a few times and generally read the books when they come out before the audio. The spinoff series is fantastic as well.

Also this is definitely one you want to read in order starting here :)

I really enjoyed! if this is the first book you've seen in this series dont start here!! At least start at the first of this Arc but preferably the start of the full series as this arc has spoilers to the first.

if you've read the first... you know what you are in for. This one was better than I'd even thought though. Catalina might be my favourite of Ilona Andrew's main characters so far.

Happy reading!

I loved it. Great narration, characters, and of course story. I would suggest starting at the beginning of the series though.

If you haven't read any of this series Do Not Start Here!!

If you have read the series up to this point you don't need me to tell you how good this is... then again you might... there's so many fantastic reveals and so much backstory! Both Patricia and Lorelei have done it all again. :)

this is a fantastic, heartfelt memoir. it made me laugh and cry. thank you for this book. thank you for sharing your story. its helped me with my journey and to understand my friends' journeys.

Also I'm sorry for the struggles you have gone through and the discrimination you and others face. It is not ok.

This is not your typical chosen one post apocalyptic magical world though it is all those things.

Vahly knows she is the last and therefore chosen but she also works freaking hard, doesn't have the power she is supposed to and still manages to go forth and make a difference even as the squishy one.

There's a hint of romance but it's slow burn and not the priority.

I liked the writing, and the audio narration.

But...

Content warning therefore spoiler alert...

Ok you've been spoiler warned. The blurb says seduction but even one of the characters calls it for what it is, rape.

I was a bit put off by the gender constructs talked of in the previous book, even if they weren't followed. The females supposed to be demure, quiet, obedient, basically there for men's pleasure and little else... ick... But the book didn't follow that for the FMC and the MC liked his female's quirk.

This book goes with a woman adopted into warrior women matriarchical culture, cool... Except the gender inequality is still very present both in and outside the culture... Fine. And then she is expected to stalk, capture, rape, steal his "seed", and start her own line. The idea of a sperm bank is brought up and is distasteful to her culture, basically it'll do if she can't succeed in her stalking, capture, rape, and baby theft but it would make her less of a woman and she would be looked down on. She even goes as far as disabling his birth control mechanisms and giving him something for more viability while he's unconscious, and not telling him. So he thinks even if she has her way, gets his seed joke will be on her...

He's no saint and, as seen in last book even if he didn't go through with it, wouldn't be above forcing a woman himself for his own agenda.

If this is what you are into reading and you acknowledge that this is not ok in reality, just as the reverse would also not be ok in reality, fantastic. But don't be under illusions this is a book that starts with rape of more than 1 sort. It doesn't matter if he likes it, it doesn't matter that it's her culture, it doesn't matter that he minimum planned to do similar, it doesn't matter that they end up falling for each other or that he admired her pre-capture for her eyes.

Rape is rape. Not reading pleasure kink shaming. There are just too many who are triggered by this to Not have the warning and too many others that think this is Ok in reality or "can't rape the (body) willing" or that men aren't raped, especially by women. But if you are ok with All of that I did like the writing and narration before I had to tap out and, for me, if it had been consensual, it would have been hot. Either way you've been warned.

I wanted to like this, it's been on my audible escape shelf for a while.

Spoilers ahead:

So you find a big shiny thing near your house after a storm. It's pretty and shiny so you investigate... you feel intention coming from it and you treat what should be a non sentient unknown object as an injured deer?? It starts moving around your arms and you aren't terrified?? It leaves you with bracelets and you take it in stride? You automatically assume it's an alien ship without references to too many sci fi shows?? Oh look huge dude lying nearby that looks half dead. Let's not call for actual medical people when he doesn't wake up right away and just assume that's dangerous for him because it's natural to think random human looking guy passed out nearby is an alien... oh also while you wait for huge unknown mystery man to wake up why not go visit and talk to the large unknown object he was found near, talk to it, be ok with the sentient and mobile jewelry it gives that seems to like switching off with the similar stuff on mystery guy? Then sleep next to naked man you don't know, who doesn't know you, who is mysteriously healing, in bed...

I found the lead female unrealistic, unrelatable, and inconsistent. Stopped at about 1/3 of the way through.

If you've come this far you know what you are getting. If not, I'd advised starting at the beginning of Guild Codex: Spellbound. Trust me it's worth going in order! And its well worth the listen!

This book fits well with G A Aiken's other dragon books so far and I found on par with her Pride and other shifter book, though not as good as her Crow and Raven books, under Shelly Laurenston. Is this is the first you've come to in this series, stop and go back, it's actually the 3rd book. Click the series name and you'll see what I mean. I found the first in the series, which is in a small anthology under Shelly Laurenston, a better introduction to this world than this book would be.

Ok so this book. Honestly I wish I hadn't read the other reviews, but I check for possible triggers. I almost skipped this book, and the rest of the series, because of them. The narrator is more subtle and dry, but so is much of humour. I found her tone fit the sarcastic characters very well. I could tell the characters apart fine and when they were upset and horny. I think a more dramatic reading might have lost something. Please check out the clip, it runs true to form.

The further you read the more spoilery this will get.

The women in these books are kick ass, and not damsels in distress. AND follow the fast love, and often indifference to hate to love trope. But if this is your 3rd in this series you already have the gist

Another review made it seem like there was unconsensual sex. There isn't. Bigger Spoilers ahead.

In the 2nd book, which happens before the first. There is dominant and sometimes sensual, sometimes both, with a safeword and chains, sex. He is very upfront about what he wants and how to actually make him stop if she wants him to stop, and she Chooses not to, yes it's a bit forceful but that is the way in these books, she is as forceful as he is when she wants to be and they have fun with it. When she accidently says the safeword he does stop, checks in and she tells him to keep going. All the books have chains at some point but always consensually when sex is involved. If any of that is not your thing that's ok.
