Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

An objective defense of science and critical thinking
Revisado: 05-05-24
Sagan does a superb job in highlighting man’s formulation of the scientific method and its practical uses since the Enlightenment. The little known stories of Maxwell, Einstein, Oppenheimer, Watson, and Crick, among many others serve to personalize the individual scientist while emphasing their contributions to the furtherance of science as a whole. His humanist world view is reflected in his recommendations to improve education, human rights, and STEM avocations. One of the most important sections involves the honing of skeptical skills of the reader to assist in separating pseudoscience from fact. Highly recommended.

Historia
For all the thousands of books that have been written about religion, few until this one have attempted to examine it scientifically: to ask why - and how - it has shaped so many lives so strongly. Is religion a product of blind evolutionary instinct or rational choice? Is it truly the best way to live a moral life? Ranging through biology, history, and psychology, Daniel C. Dennett charts religion’s evolution from “wild” folk belief to “domesticated” dogma.

Objective, scientific analysis of religion
Revisado: 12-31-23
Dennett takes an in depth view of religion from the perspective of a researcher. His dispassionate questions and well documented history of religions helps illuminate issues hidden to most loyal congregants. As in most studies in peer reviewed literature, he recommends further study to answer questions raised by his work. Some may find such an open ended conclusion dissatisfying, but I find it refreshing and timeless. Dennett’s work represents an important step forward in the study of religion. Highly recommended.

Historia
Hitler's American Friends, by Bradley W. Hart, is an audiobook examining the strange terrain of Nazi sympathizers, nonintervention campaigners, and other voices in America who advocated on behalf of Nazi Germany in the years before World War II. Americans who remember World War II reminisce about how it brought the country together. The less-popular truth behind this warm nostalgia: Until the attack on Pearl Harbor, America was deeply, dangerously divided.

Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Meacham, a great storyteller
Revisado: 11-01-22
I have read several books on Lincoln, but Jon Meacham distills them all into a masterful book. Every detail illustrates a new aspect of Lincoln, most good, some not. Such is the nature of telling the story of such a complex man. Truly one of our greatest presidents, Lincoln’s legacy will hopefully illuminate the path for our country’s future.

In this searing memoir, Congressman Jamie Raskin tells the story of the forty-five days at the start of 2021 that permanently changed his life—and his family’s—as he confronted the painful loss of his son to suicide, lived through the violent insurrection in our nation’s Capitol, and led the impeachment effort to hold President Trump accountable for inciting the political violence.

Wow. I didn’t really know who Jamie was until I saw him each night during the impeachment proceeding. I am deeply grateful he wrote this book, on the one hand a love letter to his son, Tommy, and on the other a glimpse into the inner workings as lead impeachment manager. This is a truly impactful work, all the more meaningful with Jamie as narrator. Thank you, Jamie for enriching my life.

The headlines come to life
Revisado: 04-24-18
James Comey is a disciplined, intelligent law man. He is a student of the philosophy of leadership and is a gifted historian. Unfortunately for the country, his “justice is blind” approach to the Clinton email investigation aided the country’s election of the most until president we may have ever had. This work should be filed n the Tragedy section of the library.

Historia
In November 2014, 13 members of the Biden family gathered on Nantucket for Thanksgiving, a tradition they had been celebrating for the past 40 years; it was the one constant in what had become a hectic, scrutinized, and overscheduled life. The Thanksgiving holiday was a much-needed respite, a time to connect, a time to reflect on what the year had brought, and what the future might hold. But this year felt different from all those that had come before.

Every now and then I find a book I can't put down. This was one. The narration is very well done and her ability to switch voices and accents made the story come to life. I have an hour commute, so I'll be looking for another one of her books to replace this one. Highly recommended.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.
