Poland, 1938. Despite threats of alienation from his Christian family, Johann, a decorated army officer, falls deeply in love with Rachel, a Jewish medical student. When they settle into their new countryside home, their marriage is happy and blissful…and short-lived. After the Nazi invasion of Poland, Johann goes missing. Faced with reality, Rachel knows the only way to save her daughter is to smuggle her outside the ghetto.

Great story with technical issues
Revisado: 02-18-25
The story was very good as was the narrator. But the technical editing of the narration was poor. There was a lot of repetition where the narrator paused and started up again that should have been edited out. It was very distracting to the flow of the story and took away from the narrator’s voice which otherwise lended itself well to the story.

Another awesome work by Kate Wuinn
Revisado: 03-13-24
Ms. Quinn never fails to immerse the reader into the story time and place. The Huntress takes place in the very early 1950’s with alternating flashback chapters in the final years of WW2 giving the reader the “backstory” of each of the main characters : a British journalist, a Russian female fighter pilot (aka Night Witch) and a female Nazi war criminal (the Huntress). As always, Kate Quinn brings to life a good novel based in historical truths. As the story unfolds during a time of growing distrust between the U.S. and Russia and the onset of the Cold War, we are drawn into a storyline of how ruthless war criminals hid in plain sight in postwar America and elsewhere.
While we see the story through the eyes of a young female photographer and the team of Nazi Hunters in Boston, it is a time when America and the world were trying hard to put the war behind them and often turning a blind eye to the atrocities committed. Through commitment and diligence of journalists, investigators, and private organizations, these atrocities slowly came to light, reminding us that the wheel of time does keeps turning and if we don’t learn, we are destined to repeat history.
I highly recommend this book which is delivered in a lighter, less textbook tone than my review may suggest, but trust me when I say, you will deeply feel the story while enjoying the pure suspense of it.
If you like it, give the Alice Network (my fave), the Rose Code, and Diamond Eye a try. Ms. Quinn embeds real life characters and situations in her well researched “fiction” and hold the readers throughout.
I would also like to say that the narrator for several of Kate Quinn’s audio books and other historical fiction I’ve listened to is the marvelous Saskia Maarleveld whose wonderful voice truly lends itself to a story. I find myself choosing books she has narrated whenever I can.
Well done to both ladies!
Give The Huntress a read or a listen- I will welcome you happily to the world of Historical Fiction if you aren’t there already!

Utterly fantastic
Revisado: 02-24-24
Reminiscent of the movie “Somewhere in time” this short story is an out time slip communications between two Petty Officers- her at a communications stations during WWII and him on a Naval ship in 2023. What a wonderful story about two dedicated people working to save their country in their own time who meet over the airways as signals cross time. Terrific for WWII buffs with a penchant for a little sci-fi and even wistful love. I loved it- give it a go. You might wish for a tissue when it’s over all too soon. Well done as usual to authorities Kate Quinn!

Historia
Victorian London was notorious for its pickpockets. But in the country houses of the elite, gentleman burglars, art thieves and con men preyed on the rich and titled. Wealthy victims—with their pride and reputation at stake—would never go to the police. What they needed was a society insider, one of their own, a person of discretion and finely tuned powers of observation.

Well done and satisfying mystery!
Revisado: 01-29-24
This is the first book I’ve read co- authored by Sarah Ferguson and I am delighted with her collaborative work. I didn’t realize this was actually a sequel but you can read it quite well as a stand alone.
I was drawn in by the title and time period and I must say, it was worth it. I always love a good mystery solved by an underrated and under appreciated 19th Century gentle woman who wants to have a purpose and meaning in her own right. The story is a great read or listen for lovers of historical romance and mystery.
I also really enjoyed the follow up on the historical “places and faces” acknowledged in the authors notes as narrated by Sarah herself. I truly hope there will be a third entry in the series!
The audio narrator was very enjoyable to listen to and was easily understood by my American ears. I spend most of my reading and listening time enjoying British historical mysteries and this one does not disappoint!

I loved this book. The audio version was well narrated. The story contains several cases to be solved by the modern day Holmes, Poe, and Marple investigative team. They are quite a mystery themselves - one that I certainly hope to read again in a future series. Just Brilliant! Please, Mr. Patterson, can we have more?

Historia
In 1692, Bridget Bishop was hanged as a witch. Two hundred years later, her legacy lives on in the scions of two very different lines: one dedicated to using their powers to heal and help women in need; the other, determined to grasp power for themselves by whatever means necessary. This clash will play out in the fate of Annis, a young woman in Gilded Age New York who finds herself a pawn in the family struggle for supremacy. She'll need to claim her own power to save herself - and resist succumbing to the darkness that threatens to overcome them all.

Excellent read- excellent series!
Revisado: 10-29-23
If you love historical fiction with women in the leading roles and love a bit of magic in the mix, this series by Louisa Morgan is for you. This title, the Age of Witches, centers on one time period in the late 1800’s just as women were beginning to challenge their place in the world. It focuses on descendants of the Bishop line of American witches in a family that has two branches - good and evil so to speak. The main story line follows young Annis who is coming of age and wants to defy the traditional roles of women at the time. The “wicked stepmother” engages in utilizing her special powers to bend the girl to her will in finding a husband with a British title so that the 400 of the New York society and Mrs. Astor will include their family who is considered “new money.” Think Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age with magic thrown in! Thankfully to the good great aunt comes to the rescue and discovers young Annis has powers of her own. Throughout the story, we learn that the use of “The Craft” has consequences especially if that magic is done with selfish and evil intent.
The previous entries in the series went through different time periods all the way back to the original Bishop witch being hung in Salem Massachusetts.
This is an enjoyable series that stays true to the historical time periods and mindsets - as aggravating as modern women will find them. Too bad we can’t “magic” the world today into a better place!

I have come to live historical fiction/mysteries that show what it was like for women who lived their lives under the rule I’m men but still manage to achieve and excel in pursuits albeit covertly. Murder, bias, religious fervor, fear of medical treatment, politics, and the justice system… this book has a bit of it all. Frustrating that sine haven’t really changed all that much in modern day!

Love this author
Revisado: 03-02-23
I have grown to love anything by this author! The narrator really lends herself to the story. I must say that The Seed Woman really challenged me as it is rare that one of the characters incenses me so much! It speaks well of the author that she can create such characterizations. The family dynamics of the time period are quite foreign to us modern day folks but the jealousy and somewhat psychotic behavior of Serafina could be straight out of a Real Housewives series. Honestly, I was hoping for this character to get what was coming to her throughout the whole book. I listen on my commute to and from work and I have been known to rant aloud at this character’s machinations, much to the amusement of fellow drivers. Starting the Flower Woman next!

A fabulous read or listen!
Revisado: 08-12-22
I truly enjoyed listening to this book. The narration was excellent and the voicing lended themselves to the story. Based on alternating timelines between 1925 and 1936, it’s the tale of the aftermath of WWI and the impact on the rules of society in England including the aimless nature of the Bright Young People and the struggle of families to come to grips with lost loved ones, both in death and through the scars of war. As times changes and the big houses of England begin to falter the focus is on one woman’s struggle to find herself and gain independence then falling in love with “the wrong sort” of man not of her social class. What results is a beautiful story that unfolds through the notes left for a nine year old girl who is sent on a hunt for clues about her mother’s past and how she “came to be.” It’s a long reveal but so totally worth it. Beautiful and emotional in just the right amount!
