Historia
Leto Atreides, duke of Caladan and father of the Muad’Dib. While all know of his fall and the rise of his son, little is known about the quiet ruler of Caladan and his partner, Jessica. Or how a duke of an inconsequential planet earned an emperor’s favor, the ire of House Harkonnen, and set himself on a collision course with his own death. This is the story. Through patience and loyalty, Leto serves the Golden Lion Throne. Where others scheme, the duke of Caladan acts. But Leto’s powerful enemies are starting to feel that he is rising beyond his station.

A quick paced book
Revisado: 01-14-23
The drama notches up the drama to 11 sometimes, when less may have been more, but very good, though. Very exciting and fast paced book.

Historia
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Andy Serkis brings it to life
Revisado: 01-25-22
Great story, of course, and uncut, but what sets it apart is the narration. Of course Gollum is perfect, but Serkis has a unique voice for each character and does amazingly with each. Some comments have mentioned his singing, but it is a stylistic choice. When you hear the Elves singing it is very melodic, but his singing is based on the voice of his characters. Some are better than others at carrying a tune, and I see why some are unimpressed with the singing, but know going in that it is a conscious decision by a masterful narrator.

A Ghola of Frank Herbert's Dune
Revisado: 05-18-20
The first part of the two book conclusion to the Dune saga doesn't disappoint, but it also doesn't have the same feel as the Frank Herbert masterpieces. I enjoyed Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson's prelude to Dune books, but I did a long listen to all of the books in order in preparation for the epic conclusion, and following Chapterhouse with Hunters was a bit unfair to Hunters because of the difference in writing style.
I respect Herbert and Anderson for not trying to be a carbon copy of Frank Herbert's writing. The book, in a way, is very like the Ghola children brought back by the crew of the no-ship. The characters, like the authors, know about their storied past and the expectations they are expected to live up to, and to their credit, they don't want to disappoint. They are going to be at least somewhat different, though, and that is ok. It is to be expected, and both the authors and the gholas embrace the past while being something a bit different from the original but still wonderful and very much welcome.

One Chapter(house) Dune
Revisado: 01-20-20
The audio book is good, but is in 1 chapter. It should have been broken down much better. The story is good, though it weirdly and awkwardly turns itself into what seems like a Duncan Idaho fanfic in the style of E.L. James (but FAR better written than 50 Shades). It finds its way again before the end, and despite the tonal shifts and nonexistent chapters in the audio book, is a fun trip.

The Muad'Dib's jihad is in full swing. His warrior legions march from victory to victory. But beneath the joy of victory there are dangerous undercurrents. Paul, like nearly every great conqueror, has enemies - those who would betray him to steal the awesome power he commands. Paul himself begins to have doubts: Is the jihad getting out of his control? Has he created anarchy? Has he been betrayed by those he loves and trusts the most? And most of all, he wonders: Am I going mad?

Enjoyable, but the weakest entry so far.
Revisado: 10-19-19
I enjoyed the audio book, and the performance was good. The parts that deal with Paul as Emperor are quite strong,, though I feel that one event at the end slightly cheapens one event in one of Frank Herbert's original. Still, quite good. The parts dealing with young Paul were pretty good for the most part, but one plot point goes against something established in the original Dune, and the explanation for it seemed weak. I wish they would have worked around it instead of retrofitting the canon to for their needs. Still, a passable entry.

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A masterpiece and masterfully performed
Revisado: 09-24-19
I loved Dune when I first read it, and the audio performance brings it to life. The chapters should be spaced out far better, but it is not quite enough of an annoyance to take a star away. The voice acting is great, and the audio book is altogether excellent.

Continuing the events leading up to Frank Herbert's immortal Dune saga, the exciting conclusion to this trilogy finds the cruel Tleilaxu overlords on Ix manufacturing a synthetic form of amal to supplant the spice from Dune. If amal is accepted, Emperor Shaddam IV will gain absolute power. But if the plot of the Imperial House Corrino succeeds, the result may be the end of civilization itself.

The book manages to be suspenseful in many different story threads, even for those who have read the original novels. There were even some genuine surprises and great plot twists. The audio performance was well done, too.

A great story lessened by the audiobook's setup
Revisado: 08-18-19
The story was very good, but the audio book is only 3 chapters, the primary one being over 20 hours long! Anyone looking for good stopping spots is forced to create their own. Who listens to a full audio book in one sitting? I came away feeling like the people in charge of development were negligent or simply didn't care enough about the story to bother with making chapter breaks where they clearly are supposed to be. There are 10 seconds gaps in the audio and quotations before chapters... it would have been so simple to do a great job. The lack of chapters really took away from my enjoyment, but it is still a good story and worth listening to. Just be aware that you'll want to continually set the stop timer or take copious bookmarks to avoid losing your place.

A good finish to the Butlerian Jihad books
Revisado: 04-17-19
Even having a necessarily predetermined outcome, the book had surprises...also, without giving anything away, the rift between the Atreides and Harkonnen families makes sense without either character coming across ad unlikable. It is easy to empathize with Harkonnen's decision, and to see why Vorian makes his choice, given his history with the thinking machines and how long he has fought.
