Historia
Girls from immigrant communities have been disappearing for months in the Colorado town of Blackwater Falls, but the local sheriff is slow to act and the fates of the missing girls largely ignored. At last, the calls for justice become too loud to ignore when the body of a star student and refugee—the Syrian teenager Razan Elkader—is positioned deliberately in a mosque. Detective Inaya Rahman and Lieutenant Waqas Seif of the Denver Police are recruited to solve Razan’s murder, and quickly uncover a link to other missing and murdered girls.

Excellent beyond the murder mystery story
Revisado: 06-14-23
Saw review of this in NYTimes, decided to give it a try. Good, solid murder mystery w some good ol' corruption thrown in. But what I really liked was seeing the story through the eyes of the young muslim woman detective. An affluent, mega-MAGA town w an influx of syrian and other muslim refugees. The cultural tensions, the exploitation through fear by various charlatans. Can't wait for the next one. Well written & well narrated.

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Narrator has excellent voice, excellent accents, etc, but HE CONTINUALLY DROPS VOLUME TO INAUDIBILITY. So I turn up to hear then my ears get blasted when he comes back to normal.
I love John Gwynne but will do this series on kindle instead. Very disappointing.

Historia
A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

Great idea for a story, well executed
Revisado: 10-31-22
Fun book from Cameron, can't wait for next installment. He leaves the ancient historical fiction world for something more magical, but it has the same edginess one finds in his Killer of Men series. It takes a little time to get the ball rolling which is not a knock on the book, just a note to folks to be patient. We have to meet the disparate players and follow then as fate and scheming bring them together to get the real story gets going.
Cameron can be a fast writer so I am hoping he pumps the next one soon!

Historia
The novel that launched the astonishing career of one of the 20th century's greatest writers of action and suspense - an acclaimed classic of heroism and the sea in World War II. The story of men who rose to heroism, and then to something greater, HMS Ulysses takes its place alongside The Caine Mutiny and The Cruel Sea as one of the classic novels of the navy at war. It is the compelling story of Convoy FR77 to Murmansk - a voyage that pushes men to the limits of human endurance.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

You may see some reviews where readers gave up on this book -- big mistake! The book is seen through the eyes of a person that is somewhere strange and so, yes, it will seem strange for the first 10% or so. Then the bigger picture starts to be revealed, piece by curious piece. And I found myself completely captivated. Definitely one of the top books for me over the last few years. And by the end the story does pay off, completely. It does not leave the reader hanging.
Kudos to the author for the bold storytelling!

As a boy, Alexander dreamed of matching the heroic feats of Achilles. At 18 he led the Macedonian cavalry to a stunning victory against the Greeks. By 25 he had crushed the Persians in three monumental battles and was the master of the greatest empire the world had ever seen. Men began to call him a god. But behind the legend was another, more complex story.

41 hours of pure audiobook joy
Revisado: 03-21-21
I loved Cameron's Killer of Men series, set in ~500BC and had read a few others by him. I pre-ordered this and when it was released I saw it was 41 hours. My reaction was simply "thank the gods!". I knew I had a long period of happy book times ahead. Cameron uses the same formula as in Killer of Men series: an old man, telling a youngster about his life and the great events and people he witnessed. This time it's Ptolemy, old now and king Egypt, telling about growing up and campaigning with Alexander of Macedon (A. the Great) and his epic conquests. This is up there w Cameron's best, maybe is the best? Hard to say but it's great.
I really like doing ancients in historical fiction because the fiction writer can fill in so much that is left out of our limited source material. I listened to the excellent Phillip and Alexander by Goldsworthy but always wished I could fill in the blanks, even if imagined. This does that.

One of the best things I've listened to on Audible. The concept, writing, and delivery were just brilliant. Turns out there's some 'science' behind sketch comedy. But who cares, it's really really funny. As in "why is that crazy man laughing while walking his dog around the block?"
