Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

A History that we should all experience.
Revisado: 08-18-22
This is a telling of the best that America can be. We should cherish it and practice it. It is what America should be all about. Maybe if more of us take this historical tale to heart we can overcome the likes of those responsible for the attempt to overthrow American Democracy on January 6, 2021.

Historia
Drawn by a fascination with Egypt's rich history and culture, Peter Hessler moved with his wife and twin daughters to Cairo in 2011. He wanted to learn Arabic, explore Cairo's neighborhoods, and visit the legendary archaeological digs of Upper Egypt. After his years of covering China for The New Yorker, friends warned him Egypt would be a much quieter place. But not long before he arrived, the Egyptian Arab Spring had begun, and now the country was in chaos.

When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

Reading makes you wiser
Revisado: 06-24-22
Although I studied European History in college during the prior century, I had very memory of what Europe was like before the American Revolution. This book makes a thorough presentation of all the human activities that shaped how Europe got here. It is long but well worth the investment of your time. I read to learn and I never have learned enough to stop reading. Hopefully you will share that ideal and read or listen to this magnificent historical account.

Historia
Winston Churchill is generally considered one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, revered for his opposition to appeasement, his defiance in the face of German bombing of England, his political prowess, and his memorable speeches. He became the savior of his country, as prime minister during the most perilous period in British history, World War II, and is now perhaps even more beloved in America than in England. This revelatory book takes on Churchill in his entirety, separating the man from the myth that he so carefully cultivated.

A well balanced telling of the impact of Churchill
Revisado: 04-12-22
Basically this book pulls no punches while describing the actual actions of Winston Churchill, the good and the ugly. It shows how the myth of Churchill has been used by both the English and the Americans to promote their own political agendas all the way through the Trump attempt to prevent President Biden from being seated as the legally elected President in January of 2021.

Historia
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Although the war is well known, this book goes into great detail about human decisions that effected its outcome. There is nothing new but your ability to understand why decisions were made will go a long way to your understanding of why we are where we are now.

Historia
Only four men survived the plane crash. The pilot. A politician. A cop... and the criminal he was shackled to. On an icy night in October 1984, a commuter plane carrying nine passengers crashed in the remote wilderness of northern Alberta. Four survived: the rookie pilot, a prominent politician, a cop, and the criminal he was escorting to face charges. As the men fight through the night to stay alive, the dividing lines of power, wealth, and status are erased, and each man is forced to confront the precious and limited nature of his existence.

This book kept my total attention!
Revisado: 02-16-22
It may have been because of the potential of suffering and death that made me reluctant to start listening. However it soon caught my attention and I found it difficult to stop listening. The character development was outstanding to the point that I swear that I knew the four survivors. The description of the rescue was outstanding but the post rescue narrative made me cry at times as well as cheer.

Historia
Here is the many-faceted, world-historically significant story of Britain at war. In looking closely the military and political dimensions of the conflict's first crucial years, Alan Allport tackles questions such as: Could the war have been avoided? Could it have been lost? Were the strategic decisions the rights ones? How well did the British organize and fight? How well did the British live up to their own values? What difference did the war make in the end to the fate of the nation?

Historia
Most history is hierarchical: it's about emperors, presidents, prime ministers, and field marshals. It's about states, armies, and corporations. It's about orders from on high. Even history "from below" is often about trade unions and workers' parties. But what if that's simply because hierarchical institutions create the archives that historians rely on? What if we are missing the informal, less well documented social networks that are the true sources of power and drivers of change?

History from a different focus
Revisado: 08-07-21
Niall Ferguson writes a style that is lively, interesting and informative without being stuffy. What he has to say makes you think and strive to read more of both his publications and other historians. In my case they give me a soundness and provoke thinking in a time when reality TV stars get to be president and our society continues bring dumbed dow.

Historia
On June 22, 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, one of the turning points of World War II. Within six months, the invasion bogged down on the outskirts of Moscow, and the Eastern Front proved to be the decisive theater in the defeat of the Third Reich. Ever since, most historians have agreed that this was Hitler's gravest mistake. In Hitler's Great Gamble, James Ellman argues that while Barbarossa was a gamble and perverted by genocidal Nazi ideology, it was not doomed from the start.

An interesting view of Hitler v. Stalin
Revisado: 07-23-21
The author combines history and "what might have been" potentials for a very interesting narrative. He never gives into the attraction of "counterfactuals" as he tells the tale of what happened verses what could have happened. This indepth look at Hitler's decision to open a second front is well worth your time and energy.
