Historia
Billy Budd, an orphaned, illegitimate child suffused with innocence, openness, and natural charisma, has been impressed into service aboard the HMS Bellipotent. He is adored by the crew, but for unexplained reasons arouses the antagonism of the ship's Master-at-Arms John Claggart, who falsely accuses Billy of conspiracy to mutiny.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 08-10-23
Stefan Rudnicki’s voice alone is worth the listen. Melville’s now archaic language and style is a wonderful treat, full of interestingly constructed sentences and rich word choices. I found myself smiling and even laughing out loud in spite of myself at the sheer joy of masterful writing. Melville is a legend for a reason.
The story unwinds with a sense of foreboding, a tacit knowledge of approaching tragedy, and finishes in moving prose. Let this sea tale and Rudnicki’s sonorous baritone roll you into another time and place as a great audiobook ought.

Historia
Mile upon mile of prairie covered by great buffalo herds; reckless, hard-riding plainsmen, buffalo hunters, Indians, bandits - the whole colorful epoch of the pioneer, in a story which centers around the destruction of the thundering herds of buffalo. In this breathless tale of bravery and battle, of white man's courage and red man's daring, Zane Grey has written one of his finest novels.

Brutal, Melancholy Beauty
Revisado: 07-24-23
We all know the story of the buffalo’s destruction, and with it the destruction of a culture and people. This was a captivating, wonderful story. Not unlike watching the movie “Titanic”, the underlying sense of foreboding and imminent loss is pervasive—a cloying sadness. I will forever be grateful for the descriptions of buffalo, their power, the stunning stampede. Memory of what will never be, what was wantonly destroyed.

Made it through….
Revisado: 04-28-23
Ok, so in my previous review, I said there was no way I would make it through 40hrs of this. Well, I was wrong. Could be I’m just cheap and couldn’t bear the thought of not finishing what I’d paid for, but I did finish. The narrator did in fact prevent me from really immersing myself into the story, and wow are there some cringe-worthy moments—“poignant” became “poyg-nant” several times, “haughty” was “how-ty”, “interminable” was “inter-MEEN-able”, and perhaps most legendary of the gaffes was “Custer” becoming “custard.” Not even kidding. I began to wonder if the guy was doing this on purpose. Maybe he’s having a great big laugh reading this. But then the odd cadence and emphasis on awkward words of a phrase…it was altogether cumbersome and doddering. In any case, I did make it ALL the way through each book, albeit with reinterpreting the phrasing in my mind in the midst of the read. Unfortunately, Zane Grey’s wonderful prose languishes beneath an awkward narration, but it is still 40+hrs of great writing, wonderful characters, captivating landscape, and at times beautiful words that I will remember. It’s not ALL inedible; just spit out the seeds.

Oh, Desolation!
Revisado: 03-17-23
Perhaps my favorite audio book of any genre thus far. Zane Grey’s prose and irresistible, delicious, beautiful detail of landscape & flora are as compelling as they are unforgettable. The story goes on and on, revealing characters as memorable and personal as the land they inhabit—the land is itself a character, or rather an ensemble of characters. I could not get enough. Stefan Rudnicki’s sonorous baritone and engaging performance alone is worth the price of admission here. Beautiful words, wonderful narration, and moving philosophical meditation journey along through the years to an utterly unexpected twist of an ending. I loved this work! Thank you Zane Grey, and thank you Stefan Rudnicki!

Historia
In the days of the frontier West, it was not unusual for desperadoes and fugitives from justice to seemingly disappear from the face of the earth. Shadow on the Trail by Zane Grey, one of the best-selling authors of all time, is the story of one such man who returned to reestablish himself in a law-abiding society. In Texas, young bank robber Wade Holden, once the toughest, fastest trigger man in the notorious Simm Bell gang, makes a promise to his dying mentor that he will go straight. But with the Rangers on his tail, he struggles to find sanctuary.

My favorite western story so far. Zane Grey’s prose & odes to the beauty of the land are captivating. The story and character development were excellent. Lots of great action & people to get to know. Didn’t want it to end!
