Way too much Sara and not enough Will
Revisado: 04-12-25
Disliked the level (and repetition) of graphic rapes. Giving graphic descriptions several times of the same rapes was really unnecessary.

Horrible narration

I couldn't get past second chapter. Story was so-so, but the narrator was so mechanical it was like a computer generated voice which was hard to listen to...and actually quite irritating.

OK Listen
Revisado: 07-11-24
I rated this book 3 stars because it was way too drawn out...about 2 hours longer than necessary to tell the tale.
Story was interesting to a point, but the ending was certainly no surprise, and took four or five unnecessary, repetitive chapters to get there.
Narration was so slow, I kicked it up to 1.2x and found it a much easier listen.
Not bad: Just not great.

Just...awful
Revisado: 07-04-24
So. I tried the first book based on the reviews and thought it was so bad it was almost funny. I got through three chapters of this second book and just can't.
The storyline is for perhaps 12 to 14 year old girls and the sex is not just totally repetitive but actually boring in an icky way, using the usual sex words as shock-details.
It's like a bunch of breathless sex connected by an immature storyline, if that makes any sense?
I must be a true unicorn based on the fabulous, wow reviews...
I gave two stars to the narrator for the actually reading of the thing. Thank goodness it was free.

Joe DeMarco, on the other hand, is paid to get his hands dirty. So when John Mahoney, the former Speaker of the House, calls, DeMarco knows it’s time to get to work. Brian Lewis, an intern for Mahoney, has been found dead, seemingly from a drug overdose. But Brian didn’t seem like a drug user, and even more concerning, he seemed to be on the cusp of releasing a report that identified a group of politicians who had taken bribes in helping dismantle a recent bill.

Good for the most part...BUT
Revisado: 05-14-24
I really liked the characters in this series, and I thought the stories about their histories and interactions were well done.
I only wish the author was not so infatuated with blood and gore and the graphic details of torture.
Many other authors deal with violence, murder and the details of death, but this author seems to dwell beyond forwarding and creating a story line. She seems to revel in gore...a bit like King, though not as adept.
Does a description of a gunshot to the head really need the details of skull, brain and blood matter scattered on the walls...every time? Or how arterial blood spurts and drains...every time? Or the horrible sexual and physical torture inflicted on victims ad nauseum? I understand that this violence and perversion is part of criminal reality, I just don't feel the extent and exploitation in these books necessarily improves the story.
And so predictable! After a first sentence, I knew just where the shock/disgust description was going and could therefore fast foreword and not miss anything important.
Too bad. I really liked Will and Faith and Sarah!

I so wanted to like this but just couldn't get into it. I found the premise overworked and the characters' reactions to their "strings" very predictable. Maybe if I was much younger this would have had some groundbreaking insights. Just not for me.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Thought Provoking
Revisado: 04-01-24
This book was about a subject I knew little about. I found the characters well defined and their stories compelling.
I thought it too long, however, especially in Lily's narrative, which I found tediously repetitive.
That said, I am glad I listened.

Bloated
Revisado: 02-18-24
I love this author and usually enjoy his books greatly.
This one, however, I could not wait to get through.
While the premise was interesting, the repetitive narrative and wandering details dragged the plot to a snail's pace until the last two chapters.
And the narrator, who's usually spot on, had a bit of a ham-attack, turning dialogue into a vaudeville performance.

Simply Awful.
Revisado: 11-30-23
Have absolutely loved the first three books...the narration in this one is so awful I cannot get past Chapter Three.
It's not just that this is a different narrator, it's that this is a horrible narration...almost like a very bad Tom Hanks narration impersonation. Geesh.
Maybe it can be re-recorded? Please?
