Historia
A gripping history of banking and the booms and busts that shaped the world on both sides of the Atlantic, The House of Morgan traces the trajectory of the J. P.Morgan empire from its obscure beginnings in Victorian London to the crash of 1987. Ron Chernow paints a fascinating portrait of the private saga of the Morgans and the rarefied world of the American and British elite in which they moved. Based on extensive interviews and access to the family and business archives, The House of Morgan is an investigative masterpiece.

Fantastic - suitable narrator, engaging story
Revisado: 05-10-24
I enjoyed the personification of the banking progression as embodied by the Morgans and Lamont. It gave a liveliness to a topic that could have been dry. I'm extremely impressed by the author's ability to write this within the span of a couple years.

Historia
Existentialism is the literary cri de coeur resulting from the realization that without God, everything good, true, and beautiful in human life is destined to be destroyed in a pitiless material cosmos. Theodore Dalrymple and Kenneth Francis examine the main existentialist works, from Ecclesiastes to the Theatre of the Absurd, each man coming from a different perspective. Francis is a believer, Dalrymple is not, but both empathize with the struggle to find meaning in a seemingly meaningless universe. This book is part literary criticism, part philosophical exploration....

A guide to further reading
Revisado: 06-28-21
This book is a series of essays written by two authors about various other books, plays, and movies that impacted their views of the existential problems we face. It serves as a great starting point for further exploration, making you want to read each of the works mentioned. The narration is excellent - it is calm while remaining engaging.
If you enjoy thinking about existential matters such as life, death, and God, this book is definitely for you.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

Revisado: 12-26-20
Everything about The Night Circus is fantastic. The narrator is very well paired to the story - everything from his reading of the scenery descriptions to dialogue feels very well voiced. I'm going to buy a hardcover copy to put on my shelf.

ignore the bad reviews
Revisado: 12-15-20
I enjoyed The Road quite a bit. There's an atmosphere of suspense that few other books seem to have. Not only does the story have merit in and of itself, there's quite a lot to think about - the lengths you go to to stay alive and whether or not it's worth it. it's also a book that reminds you of the great capacities of humanity for good and evil.
I thought the narrator did a good job as well, especially with the father's voice .

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

A very important book
Revisado: 09-17-20
I believe the title of this book makes it seem like something hippie or a book representing eastern philosophy in a similar vein to Sidartha. Though it does touch on eastern philosophy briefly, this book is much more than that. It's a story that incorporates a unique philosophical message that most likely you will not have enountered anywhere else. It's a simbiosis between a man's search for philosophical ideals and a story about a motorcycle trip that together embody the idea.
It is an absolute must read .

Lengthy - raises important ethical questions
Revisado: 08-16-20
This book does a great job of making you think about the ethics of health care under stressful circumstances. The author does a great job exploring the difficult choices from multiple perspectives, though I believe it is clear to the reader what the author's position is. Sheri Fink does a great job humanizing the various characters in this book. It is a bit long winded but, I think that is the result of a large ammount of investigation. You will want to discuss this book with others.

Historia
In The Cold War, Odd Arne Westad offers a new perspective on a century when a superpower rivalry and an ideological war transformed every corner of our globe. We traditionally think of the Cold War as a post-World War II diplomatic and military conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. But in this major new work, Westad argues that the conflict must be understood as a global ideological confrontation with roots in the industrial revolution and with continuing implications for the world today.

"Free men cannot start a war, but once it is started, they can fight on in defeat." This compelling, dignified and moving novel was inspired by and based upon the Nazi invasion of neutral Norway. Set in an imaginary European mining town, it shows what happens when a ruthless totalitarian power is up against an occupied democracy with an overwhelming desire to be free.

Wasn't for me
Revisado: 01-17-19
I didn't like this Steinbeck book nearly as much as East of Eden. I wanted to read es something with the theme of War. This book had a few humourous moments but overall felt a bit too heavy handed, and not really in a George Orwell sort of way. I wasn't really that keen on narrator either. Overall, kinda glad it was short
