Historia
Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

Totally Awesome
Revisado: 01-05-25
I knew that the movie was kind of a satire, and I didn't know what to expect, but it was a fast paced and gripping story that presents a lot of really interesting ideas. I just wish there was morem

Historia
The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Even Better Than Expected
Revisado: 02-03-24
Andy Serkis really shines as a narrator. I came for the Gollum, but all of the characters have a distinct voice and intonation.
I had trouble getting through Fellowship, but this one is absolutely captivating start to end.

Good Information, but a Little Tedious
Revisado: 11-30-23
This was written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's jarring to listen to the author earnestly compare the Black Death to Covid.
Most of the book is an interesting and informative expansion of the earlier lecture series about the plague, and it was a good listen. It's nice to have the knowledge gaps filled in, and for that it was worth the purchase.
The parts commenting on contemporary events, especially with the extra perspective of a few years past the peak of the pandemic, falls flat.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Dark, grim, but sweet
Revisado: 08-08-23
The unlikely trio we follow endear themselves to us. It is clear that the author did his research and the medieval France presented feels alive.
The characters find themselves in a struggle between good and evil in their purest forms and in struggles within themselves.

The unblinking story of two lost and self-destructive drifters - a failed painter working as a counterman in a cheap diner and a woman in flight from domestic violence - trying to find a place for themselves in the back streets of San Francisco, Pick-Up is hardboiled writing at its nihilistic best.

Gritty Fun That Revels in Genre
Revisado: 03-29-23
The narrator really delivers. His voice is grave and demands your attention.
The plot is a little thin, and there's a pretty clear delineation between the first act and the rest of the book that feels like the author wanted to end it there but then decided against it.
If you like adverbs you'll get as many as you want.
I was immersed beginning to end.
I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the big reveal.

Historia
If the past is prologue, then George R. R. Martin's masterwork - the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time - warrants one hell of an introduction. At long last, it has arrived with The World of Ice & Fire. This volume is a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, providing vividly constructed accounts of the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO's Game of Thrones.
