Historia
When ten-year-old Ebby Freeman heard the gunshot, time stopped. And when she saw her brother, Baz, lying on the floor surrounded by the shattered pieces of a centuries-old jar, life as Ebby knew it shattered as well. The crime was never solved—and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a particularly well-to-do enclave of New England—the case has had an enduring, voyeuristic pull for the public. The last thing the Freemans want is another media frenzy splashing their family across the papers, but when Ebby's high profile romance falls apart, that's exactly what they get.

Lack of any substance.
Revisado: 03-04-25
I mistakenly thought this was supposed to be more than a fluff read. 1) start with an interesting open and story outline 2) repeat it over and over and over and over 3) toss in some horribly trite “romance” and bingo!! You have this book!!

Great historical novel.

The actress who voiced 1987, was not particularly good. But, I believe a hard copy would have been much better. The rest? Very gravitating. It pulls you in.

Historia
Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet. Then the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of deaths across the coast—confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.

Trite and stereotypical.
Revisado: 11-28-24
The only thing I liked was the end, in both meanings. The characters were sooooooooo stereotypical, airhead, sole focus on an MRS., etc. The actors playing them must have hated it too and it showed.

Historia
Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy, and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor, and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea's charitable work brings her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted by the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person's skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets one of the prisoners, the teenaged seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another strange idea.

Great yarn. But whoever voiced Dorothea was horrible.

It is definitely worth the read. But no, but if you have half a brain, you will hate Dorothea. The actress’ voice is irritating.

Historia
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

If you are the intellectual equivalent of a 12 year old, you may enjoy this. Otherwise, just no.
Revisado: 05-07-24
It was trite, repetitive to the point of “it’s a small world,” laden with stereotype, zero originality, and just awful. The only reason I continued was due to the publicity it received by Fallen. It MUST be a relative, or he is being blackmailed. It is THAT bad

Great listen
Revisado: 12-15-23
At the start, I did not think I was going to enjoy this book as much as I did. It kept reminding me of “a man called Otto.“ But once I got into it, I truly enjoyed it.
TheThe characters were very well developed. I had difficulty with Rose, because the author tried to make her sound “precocious,“ The rest of the characters I loved.
The performance truly made those come to life. I think it’s one of the first audiobooks, where I genuinely appreciated the talent in performance.

Historia
Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

The reviews are wrong
Revisado: 09-29-23
I only purchased this book because of the many good reviews and endorsements. I one hundred percent disagree with all of them. This book was a slog. Way way way too much detail, way too many tangents, way way way too long. The plot, once you find it, would’ve been fine and would’ve made a great short story. If you want to listen to a documentary on disability, there are much better books in order to educate. I thought the purpose of this one fell short as did the overall book. I didn’t want to punish the actor.

I have read Lisa Jewel a long time ago and preordered this one. Everything falls together and the performances were great. Could have. Edited out the fake music though. That was distracting on audio. Will definitely recommend.

If you are familiar with this author’s works, then you already know this is not deep literature. That said, it is highly highly entertaining! I love the series and the narrator is probably the best I have ever heard. I can’t wait for the next Heathcliffe Lennox book!

If I could leave less than one star for this narrator, I would.
Revisado: 07-18-23
The story, overall, would be an entertaining read. With this narrator, however, I almost didn’t get past the third chapter. Another reviewer said, and I wholeheartedly agree “if you want to hear, Siri read a book and this is the one for you.“
