Historia
An enforcer wanted dead for crimes she didn’t commit.... An assassin wanted dead for crimes he did commit.... Normally, they would be enemies, but they both seek the same thing: exoneration. Unfortunately, a nefarious underground organization is attempting to kill the one man who could grant it to them - the emperor. If they want to win their freedom, they’ll have to battle powerful wizards, outscheme master schemers, and defeat bloodthirsty monsters, all while dodging friendly fire and evading the law. Exoneration isn’t easy.

When the heroine grates on your nerves.
Revisado: 06-15-24
Somewhere in Book 2, I began to hate Amaranthe because she's every pushy, idealistic *Karen* who insists on taking unnecessary risks because she knows that someone is going to save her butt. That she does this with an all male team plays into some many sexist tropes. Maybe Audible will refund my credit

A boolk you won't be able to put down
Revisado: 04-06-24
This is a book that entertains, uplifts and honors the ancestors, and what Ms. McKnight has accomplished is nothing short of amazing. While it would be easy to describe this book as romantic fiction, it is so much more in that it shines a light on the Black experience during and after Reconstruction in the post-Emancipation South.
Ms. McKnight is a masterful storyteller, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Subtle misogny
Revisado: 02-02-24
I'm noticing a pattern in this series where women who seek power and control of their lives become the victims or more powerful people, are banished or meet a bad ending. And they fate they meet is always worse than what they've done.

Interlude Dragged The Other Stories Down
Revisado: 10-13-23
The book felt like that game where someone whispers a message or sentence to another person, who then whispers it to another person, who whispers it to another person, until the only left to hear the sentence is the person who initially shared it. At the end of the game, everyone gets to see how the sentence evolved as it was shared. In this case, the thing being passed off from Hearne to Dawson to Wendig was a plot device, and just like the game, things fell apart at end.
Prelude was what I expected from Kevin Hearne, and Dawson did a better than expected job incorporating Hearne's plot device (I won't spoil the surprise by saying what it is) into Not My Circus. Unfortunately, Wendig took Dawson's plot device and went left...WAY left...crafting a story that felt forced and unfinished. Even after listening to his Interlude twice, the only significant thing I can remember is that the plot device is used by one of the characters.

More Greatness from Audible's Dynamic Duo
Revisado: 10-13-23
While the team of Kevin Hearne & Luke Daniels may come close, every Scalzi book narrated by Wheaton has been so good that I feel like the Aubdible Originals introduction should end with DJ Khaled yelling "Another one!" (IYKYK)
All jokes aside, this book was everything I've come to expect from Scalzi: inventive plots, timeless cultural and pop culture references, sentient animals, and characters that want to make their corner of the planet a little better (i.e., fantastical works of fiction that make me believe that good people can prevail).

Great story despite the hashtag abuse
Revisado: 09-08-23
While I really enjoyed this cozy mystery, the author's overt misuse of hashtagging was a distraction and came off as a Baby Boomer's idea of how Millennial influencers communicate on social media.

Historia
In Filthy Rich Politicians, Lewis embarks on an investigative deep dive into the ridiculous state of modern American democracy—a system where the rich get elected and the elected get rich. One of the brightest conservative writers of his generation, Lewis doesn’t just complain: he articulates how Americans can achieve accountability from their elected leaders through radically commonsense reforms. But many of these ruling-class elites have a vested financial interest in rejecting the reforms so desperately needed to rebuild Americans’ trust in the institutions that once made our nation great.

Long on (biased) anecdotes; short on solutions
Revisado: 07-24-23
It's hard to believe any author is serious about addressing political graft when he grossly conflates the actions of one party while glossing over or ignoring those of the folks on the other side of the aisle—like giving more weight to AOC's Met Gala dress than to Kellyanne Conway using her official role and the White House as a backdrop to tell people to buy Ivanka Trump's products, or completely ignoring HUD Secretary Alfonso Jackson's egregious cronyism that led to the FBI raiding his chief of staff's house and his prompt resignation.
While I found the numerous anecdotes interesting, the author's overt political bias and his half-hearted, soft-selling of possible solutions really detracted from his overall message.

Didn't want it to end
Revisado: 06-19-23
Despite the diverse cast of characters, the author managed not to engrossed in trivial dialog, so every paragraph/minute of the story was engaging and entertaining. That said, I've thoroughly enjoyed this series and hope it continues.
