Having listened to this after the 2020 election, I of course, have the benefit of living through the election and its near-term aftermath. Hind-sight, as they say is 20-20. That said, the author appears to have made some of the same mistakes in interpreting the opinion of the American people - at least a very large minority of them when it comes to the presidential election. He was even further off when it comes to the House and Senate outcomes. Apparently the American people were not as "tired of a Republican party and conservative movement ..." as his research suggested given that the Democrats lost seats in the House and their potential, extremely thin majority in the Senate hangs in the balance of the run-off votes in January. Pollsters and the media that rely on the results must find a better way to glean the true prevailing perspectives of the American people. Dionne's argument that progressives and moderates must work together is, however right on target.

I almost did not buy this book. The 2nd and 3rd books in this series seemed to lose much of the humor of the first book. The humor is back.

Good story, narration a bit off

The story is well written but the narration often makes transitions within the chapters difficult to follow. In the print version, u suspect there is some mechanism (blank lines or a few characters such as asterisks or a solid line) to indicate a transition from one group of characters to another. The narrator just read across these transitions without even a pause.

I liked the first three books, but this one, not so much. Mayne took Cray too far down the rabbit hole.

Somewhere around chapter 17 (give or take a chapter or two) the body of a suicide was found. The author never did reveal the actual cause of death. But I think I know why: she read this book up to that point and hung herself (although the author did conclude it was not a suicide.

Cornwell could have deleted half of the book and it would stil have been twice as long as it needed to be. So what is with the nauseating and recurring flashbacks to the main character's bagle injury that got dropped in at random places throughout the story. And who counts milliseconds when they are going somewhere, even of they are late?

I could go on, but I have wasted far too much time on this book already.

The gods should have "died" sooner -- much sooner. The story was too predictable. I was predicting lines far too often.

The plot underlying this story has considerable potential. Unfortunately, the author's writing fell way short of delivering on this potential. There were many times that I almost quit this book. While some of the action was OK, the dialog was often tedious and, quite frankly, juvenile.

The narrator did a decent job with the material he had to work with. However, he lacked range in conveying the emotions of the characters. A little more prosody please.

I will not be purchasing Part 2 if this series.
