Best of the series
Revisado: 06-19-24
I've looked forward to this book for over a year waiting for it to hit audible and it was well worth the wait. Until now this series has been fun and I've enjoyed it but the character and plot development on this book really took this series to a new level for me. Really good stuff!!

The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

The Uncanny Valley
Revisado: 11-28-23
This stood out to me because it is so lifelike, but different enough that it's fun. The story starts as the usual prince setting off on discovery that's comfortable we' ve all read that enough to develop a taste for it. Men make plans and god laughs Hayden begins his story not as some mystical invincible hero but the same awkward and semi competent child we all were. Though good luck bad choices and good storytelling we are brought to a place that is organic enough to be fun without being boring. It's wzards in space but fun and the character development is scary good

Cahan du Nahare is known as the forester—a man who can navigate the dangerous Deepforest like no one else. But once he was more. Once he belonged to the god of fire. Udinny serves the goddess of the lost, a goddess of small things; when she ventures into the Deepforest to find a lost child, Cahan will be her guide. But in a land where territory is won and lost for uncaring gods, where temples of warrior monks pit one prophet against another—Cahan will need to choose the forest or the fire—and his choice will have consequences for his entire world.

Unexpected and Unstoppable
Revisado: 09-07-23
I didn't approach this as anything special, another reluctant hero on a quest against an evil empire..... Yawn. What I found was a compelling story of the perseverance of normal people with all of their frailty, ugliness, and nobility on full display. The hero is tormented without being tedious, the dialog isn't overly or overtly preachy, and the character motivation is natural and organic. Well done!

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Thought Provoking
Revisado: 05-30-23
This is a rare jem in fantasy of the kind I think deserves remembering. The ideas put forth in here make you stop and consider what you think about your world and life and the values you hold without being overly preachy or obsessed with itself (looking at you Golden Compass)
This is the best work James has done so far and it's a damn fun read.

Historia
From the Koran to Shakespeare, this city with three names - Byzantium, Constantinople, Istanbul - resonates as an idea and a place, real and imagined. Standing as the gateway between East and West, North and South, it has been the capital city of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. For much of its history it was the very center of the world, known simply as "The City", but, as Bettany Hughes reveals, Istanbul is not just a city but a global story.

Revisado: 03-21-23
This was fun engaging and informative without being dull or dead. I was surprised because even though it's not dramatized, I was emotionally invested in the story. Fantastic work and the authors knowledge of the subject and passion are wonderfully infectious

This is an excellent overview of the Middle Ages through an English lense. I've heard a few of these now and since we're constantly referencing that science technology and culture coming from Asia and the Middle East I wonder why we're not covering them instead of Europe

Historia
Edward I is familiar to millions as "Longshanks", conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace (in Braveheart). Yet this story forms only the final chapter of the king's action-packed life. Earlier, Edward had defeated and killed the famous Simon de Montfort, traveled to the Holy Land, and conquered Wales. He raised the greatest armies of the Middle Ages and summoned the largest parliaments. Notoriously, he expelled all the Jews from his kingdom.

Apologist bordering propaganda
Revisado: 10-16-21
The book is good the authors rampant English bias and fawning apologisum for his subject is a bit of a drag. Still it has good information and while I don't agree with his point of view he does a good job presenting the information

Revisado: 05-20-21
The test of a writer is in what they make you feel or if they can at all. I haven't found anyone who could make me feel for his character and setting this hard since Robert Jordan. While this is a different kind of writing it is moving thought provoking and fun excellent job looking forward to the rest

Rape Porn
Revisado: 07-08-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The constant gratuitous rape scenes
What was most disappointing about J. K. Swift’s story?
See above
What three words best describe Brad Wills’s voice?
Engaging exciting new
Did Acre inspire you to do anything?
Never purchase any of this man's writing again.
Any additional comments?
I could have dealt with the authors lack of expertise on swordsmanship and weaponry in general, but fact that the story was lack luster compounded by his repellant and constant use of rape as a plot device was disgusting
