Historia
In Killing Commendatore, a 30-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a previously unseen painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious 13-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II in Vienna.

This book flew by. I couldn’t stop listening. This guy is one of my all time favorite narrators as well. Perfect voice to match the novel.

Unbelievable
Revisado: 01-27-25
Ben Fountain is now one of my favorite modern authors. What a phenomenal story set in Haiti, a deeply troubled and misunderstood part of the world. The characters are wonderful and you’ll really get on with all of the protagonists. I know that Fountain spent some time in Haiti, so I feel like he’s a credible storyteller in this regard. His take on the issues seemed objective and well-thought-out. No one was immune to criticism and those who deserved praise were rightly praised. It really gets to the heart of the complexities of humanity - I feel like Haiti might bring that complexity out in all of us. Highly recommend.
Great narrator too!

Historia
Booker Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie combines a ferociously witty family saga with a surreally imagined and sometimes blasphemous chronicle of modern India and flavors the mixture with peppery soliloquies on art, ethnicity, religious fanaticism, and the terrifying power of love. Moraes "Moor" Zogoiby, the last surviving scion of a dynasty of Cochinese spice merchants and crime lords, is also a compulsive storyteller and an exile.

Not my favorite Rushdie, but still a masterpiece
Revisado: 12-04-24
My 4th Rushdie. Wasn’t my favorite of them, but in typical Rushdie fashion, a masterpiece nonetheless. Always an absolute joy to read (or listen, in this case). Narrator was good - bit over the top with some characters, but hats off to him.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Very long but very worth it
Revisado: 08-22-24
The first half is a bit tedious (but also brilliant in its own way if you think about it), events do pick up though. I found myself looking forward to listening and visiting their world, as every good book should do.

Historia
In the wake of an unimportant battle between two long-forgotten kingdoms in fourteenth-century southern India, a nine-year-old girl has a divine encounter that will change the course of history. After witnessing the death of her mother, the grief-stricken Pampa Kampana becomes a vessel for a goddess, who begins to speak out of the girl’s mouth. Granting her powers beyond Pampa Kampana’s comprehension, the goddess tells her that she will be instrumental in the rise of a great city called Bisnaga—“victory city”—the wonder of the world.

Rushdie master storyteller and Sagar master narrator
Revisado: 04-04-23
This was my fourth Salmon Rushdie book, and my goodness, it’s one of the best books i’ve ever had the pleasure of “reading” / listening to, and Sid Sagar narrating it was an absolute joy. Perfect match of story and storyteller. It’s an absolute new classic of Rushdie’s magical realism canon about a fictional India of old. An enthralling setting for me as a westerner. Rushdie’s voice is that of an old master storyteller with a modern twist. I can’t get over how good this was. I’m so glad Salman Rushdie is still producing some of his best work yet and putting it out in 2023! And so glad that Sid Sagar is around to read it to us. Magic.
