Historia
For nearly a century, Victorian London relied on “climbing boys” - orphans owned by chimney sweeps - to clean flues and protect homes from fire. The work was hard, thankless, and brutally dangerous. Eleven-year-old Nan Sparrow is quite possibly the best climber who ever lived - and a girl. But when Nan gets stuck in a deadly chimney fire, she fears her time has come. Instead, she wakes to find herself in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Huddled in the corner is a mysterious creature - a golem - made from ash and coal. This is the creature that saved her from the fire.

Loved this so much!
Revisado: 06-16-24
Sweep has fantastic characters, settings, and plot. I truly enjoyed this audio more than any I've listened to in a long time. Unlike most stories, this one takes new and interesting turns midway and toward the end. If I had to mention any weaknesses, I would say that it's a tad predictable. However, I'm 56, so that probably comes with the territory. Jonathan Auxier did an incredible job of thoroughly weaving the story's elements. He also touched on cultural differences without sounding preachy and provided layers of symbolism. Just fabulous.

Although Bennie and Sasha never discover each other’s pasts, the listener does, in intimate detail, along with the secret lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs, over many years, in locales as varied as New York, San Francisco, Naples, and Africa.

Excellent writing
Revisado: 05-26-24
Listening to A Visit from the Good Squad was fun. The setting and characters were well done. My only complaint is the exploration of unhealthy lifestyles. It seemed like using literature and good writing as an excuse to dive into shady situations. Do good books need filth?

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Excellent audio book
Revisado: 06-26-23
The story is a little depressing but still fantastic. Charlie Thurston does a phenomenal job narrating the audible version. It lags a little with over-the-top drug abuse and sadness, but this is what the story is about, and the main character's overall spirit and ability to rise above it are inspiring. The characters and descriptions are absolutely believable.

Historia
It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, nine, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer?
