Historia
Hey you guys, it’s Leslie. I’m excited to share my story with you. Now, I’m gonna be honest: Some of the details might be vague because a b*tch is fifty-five and she’s smoked a ton of weed. But while bits might be a touch hazy, I can promise you the underlying truth is REAL.

Fantastic listen
Revisado: 09-30-23
Leslie Jones is incredible (and she knows it). This is not a straight read of the book. It makes you feel like you’re sitting on the floor next to Leslie listening to her tell you all kinds of crazy stories. She’s so funny and potty-mouthed. Of course there are serious parts to the book and Leslie makes sure she lets us all know exactly what lessons she wants us to take away from these. I gotta give Jamie Foxx a huge thank you for the advice he gave a young Leslie Jones trying to break into comedy and to Leslie for listening. Without that interaction, we wouldn’t have the Leslie Jones we have today. We’d probably still know her, but she’d be a different person. I knew I loved Leslie’s work, but hearing her story and her authenticity makes me love her as a human too. As long as you don’t mind a lot of cussing, this is a must-listen about knowing one’s own worth, perseverance, and lots of laughs along the way.

Informative. Not Dry.
Revisado: 08-15-23
Are you considering becoming a grant writer? This is a great place to start to evaluate that decision. Meredith touches on every aspect of grant writing without getting stuck in the technical weeds. She includes plenty of examples, case studies, and direction to where you can get free templates for common documents you will need to create for your client/employer.
She has such a healthy attitude about self-care. Many grant writers want to save the world but forget that in order to do that, they need to be healthy and have their basic monetary needs met. This woman has learned so much “the hard way” and is helping others learn the quick and easy way. You just have to listen and trust.
Most books on grant writing are technical and dry. Even when Meredith is getting into a technical description of something, she’s somehow still entertaining. I think it’s her enthusiasm that comes through that keeps it interesting.
Since I actually do write grants for a living, I also bought the print edition of this book. I’m sure I will want to use it as a reference in the future.
If you have any interest in exploring grant writing as a career, side hustle, or valuable volunteer get this book.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

MUST READ for every American
Revisado: 05-07-23
Although most Americans have a cursory knowledge of most of the subjects covered in this book, the author takes us deeper than the surface level and really looks at the effects of policies in the US. it ends on a hopeful note of coming together and being the best we can be as an integrated nation. Whether or not that is truly possible, I cannot say. However, I am more aware of the roadblocks that need to be moved first. I will likely listen again and definitely recommend to others.

Historia
Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing guru like Marie Kondo - he's just a regular guy who was stressed out and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he didn't absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for everything around him.

I think I’ll listen many times more
Revisado: 01-16-23
I’m not quite a hoarder like you might see on TV, but I definitely have too much stuff and much of it is completely unnecessary. This book really gave me a different perspective on “stuff” and I think if I drill it into my brain as I start my journey to freedom from stuff, I may just be successful. This is not a nuts & bolts how-to sort your stuff kind of book. It’s much deeper than that, yet super accessible. I don’t write reviews very often, but this one really deserved more than just stars.

It ain’t Nothing to Envy
Revisado: 10-02-22
I got this because I absolutely love Nothing To Envy. I was about to relisten to that for the third time when I noticed this book. Of course I find Tibet intriguing but really don’t have a good understanding of all of the issues surrounding it. So, it was a no-brainer purchase.
Well, it’s informative, and it’s not bad in the storyline. It just didn’t hit me in the face the way Nothing to Envy did. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time for me. I listened to this right after testing positive for Covid, so I may have just not had the necessary attention span. I’ll try again in a few months and see how it goes. If I find it to be substantially better (or worse), I’ll post that.

Happy-Go-Lucky

Historia
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

David Sedaris fans won’t be disappointed
Revisado: 06-27-22
This is classic David Sedaris. There are some serious topics, but he keeps the reader laughing and moving onto the next story. The only part I don’t like is that it had to end. I could easily listen to these stories for twice as long without getting bored.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Very good but Performance a bit much at times
Revisado: 12-16-20
This is a very good book with lots of great nuggets of wisdom for getting the most out of life. My only issue is with the almost yelling of subtitles that repeat throughout the book. I listened to the whole book in one sitting and it didn’t start irritating me until about half-way in. So maybe I wouldn’t have been bothered had I listened in multiple sessions. That’s really my only complaint. Obviously it wasn’t so bad that I had to stop listening. Just something to be aware of.
