I listened to this on vacation while driving through the North Carolina mountains! You are immediately comforted with the voice of the one and only DIck Van Dyke. This is another story of someone who went through a long time with nothing and lived one day to the next, which you forget in all of the glamour of Hollywood. I must admit that I kept waiting for what I consider to be the two big Dick events, the breakup of his marriage and subsequent long partnership with MIchelle Triola and his alcoholism. Don't make the same mistake! There are plenty of good stories about his television shows, Broadway shows and movies and his marriage as they moved around for his career. I got the book from the library to look at the pictures and he was friends with great ones such as Richard Crenna. I know what Michelle looked like but I would have liked to see her picture in there are as well. This is a multi-generation listen; my mom liked it too!

A Rule against Murder Audiolibro Por Louise Penny arte de portada

My first book by Louise Penny

I had Louise Penny on my author list to try for a long time, and downloaded this one before a long car trip. This was a good mystery which took a while to unwind. I was totally unfamiliar with the character and just knew the books took place in Canada. I will defintely listed to more of these in the future.

Not what I expected

I was reading a book by a medical person about grief and the author indicated that Out of Africa was one of her late husband's favorite books, so I put it on my list. I think it helps to have seen the movie if for no other reason you can picture the actress who played the author. This is not a continuous book but a series of stories, some pleasant, some not. You do not have to listen all at one time but can come back to it, which I did.

Good book

I think you will be impressed with this book as I was to think that the writer is a pretty young guy. He is a witness to the Falwell empire and has the luck to have the last interview with him. I really liked that he read his own book. Kevin Roose doesn't seem to have much regret that he misled his LIberty friends while it was happening, which I found hard to believe, though.he does return to campus sometime later and 'fesses up. You will come away with the feeling that you never knew such places existed, although I have since learned that Brigham Young has similar restrictions. Easy, fast listen which is always good!

Great book

This is a great book that had been on my wish list for quite a while. It really gave you the history after World War II and I never knew that a lot of people wanted to forget what Hitler and company had done and just move on. I don't know if I would have felt that way. The build up of people knowing that was probably Eichmann in South America but preceding cautiously with that information was suspenseful. Even though you know what eventually happens you won't be disappointed with this book. The narration is great. Not as long as the hours imply; this is a fast listen.

Good but too long

THis was recommended as one of the top books for 2008 and I knew it was long but I have been driving a lot so I tried it. Really excellent story about Jefferson but moreso about the extended Hemings clan. I have read the book a while ago about Sally Hemings but this really fleshed out the entire clan and their history. I really enjoyed reading about their time in Paris and the possibility that Sally could be freed there. In the end, just too long and now if I see an audio book I might be interested in I compare its length to this one and if it is about as long I have to say no. Maybe in an abridged version it would be better.

Another Joe Haldeman winner

This was a great listen that I saved until I was making a long car trip. Kept bouncing back between the past and the present, which was a bit offputting at first, until both stories converge in a great climax. I won't give anything away, but if you have enjoyed other books by this author like Forever War, this is for you. There is no war in this one, however. Get it!

Wonderful book

This is a great book for audio that was on one of those "best of" lists I saw for 2008. I actually had to replay the beginning half way through when the reader states that it is fiction. This is a look at WWII that you have not seen before; the war was exciting, suspenseful, and they all wanted to be there. Not exactly the "Greatest Generation" stuff we have been inundated with, but better. The hero's wife also did not want to miss anything so she volunteered and is right there in Africa, even while pregnant. The hero says that British public schools prepared men for the war. A great time to be a man or a woman. Would I ( a woman) have gone? Not to be forgotten, terrific narration by Alfred Molina.

This is an excellent book

I am a fan of Robert Harris and I was not disappointed by the The Ghost which has first person narration and a killer ending. Another British based novel but takes place in the USA. Also try some of his others such as Fatherland and Imperium. The length is great as well.

Something made me want to listen to this; maybe it was seeing Blazing Saddles again. Gene Wilder has a terrific background in the theater that I was totally unaware of! It brought back a lot of the Seventies and what they represent for us baby boomers. I looked especially forward to the chapters about Gilda and was not disappointed. I had heard that he had some sort of illness but I am glad to know he is still among us and with a wonderful wife of about 20 years. Watch Blazing Saddles or Silver Streak again, you will see what I mean.
