Historia
Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband's shadow. He controls her every move - what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she's allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are...consequences. And he has all the power. To outsiders, it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she's allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second. Unless she flips the script.

Trite and a waste of time
Revisado: 03-18-24
A singular plot with only one dimensional characters and poorly written descriptions. The plot gets all wrapped up with a bow to leave an unappetizing taste. Why did I waste my time on this??

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

The Trump Tapes explodes with the exclusive, inside story of Trump’s performance as president—in his own words as he is questioned, even interrogated by Woodward, on the president’s key responsibilities from managing foreign relations to crisis management of the coronavirus pandemic. This is the job Trump seeks again. How did he do the first time? This is the authentic answer, laying bare his repeated failures, obsessions, and grievances.

Trump in his own voice
Revisado: 11-30-22
It’s even more appalling than I had imagined. He doesn’t listen, talks over Woodward’s questions, lies and exaggerates repeatedly and is completely full of himself.

Historia
Tens of thousands of men and women have left comfortable, privileged lives to join the Islamic State and kill for it. To them, its violence is beautiful and holy, and the caliphate a fulfillment of prophecy and the only place on earth where they can live and die as Muslims. The Way of the Strangers is an intimate journey into the minds of the Islamic State's true believers. From the streets of Cairo to the mosques of London, Wood interviews supporters, recruiters, and sympathizers of the group.

What are Jihadists Thinking, and Why?
Revisado: 06-14-17
Graeme Wood set out to understand our enemy, and this book is written to capture the thoughts of those who support the Islamic State. He's interviewed many, and a common pattern emerges through their stories. Graeme is an excellent writer, and storyteller, and I've recommended this book to many of my friends. Despite the deadly horror and seriousness of the subject matter, Graeme occasionally uses wry humor as he points out the contradictions in the personal lives of those who preach hatred and jihad against any "non-believers". He also helps understand why moderate Muslims' attitude toward jihadists are relatively unlikely to make a serious dent in the problem. I recommend this book highly.

Revisado: 03-26-13
I loved Robert A. Heinlein as a youth, and read this book (and all or most of his others) about 40-45 years ago, but barely recalled it. I bought this because it was on special pricing, and featured. After about 2 hours of listening, I felt like I'd gotten my money's worth, and stopped listening. It might get better after that, so you should read other reviewers' opinions.

The plot was good. I figured out shortly after starting this book that the author has a primary character who is central to a series of books. I generally don't like those, but this was pretty good.

Imaginative, and in that regard, an interesting book. Strong storyline, but overall I'd recommend it only to folks who like Grisham but haven't read this, or who have read no Grisham at all.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

Gripping account of Vietnam War
Revisado: 03-26-13
My wife and I started this book on a long car trip, and were hooked by the first hour. The story, although stated to be a novel, seems to resemble what I imagine to be real life for the Marines in that war, at that time. I strongly suspect it is pretty much autobiographical.
I've recommended it enthusiastically, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has a loved one in active duty in a combat zone, for fear that it would heighten their anxiety.
One of the best "novels" I've read in a long time.

Very enjoyable story
Revisado: 03-26-13
The author spent great effort and attention to developing the characters in this book. I gather from other hostage nonfiction articles and books that some patterns and relationships develop, but this story brings that dynamic to life. The narrator added feeling to the story, as well. I'd strongly recommend this book.
