There are too many medical mistakes that made this audiobook for me - firstly uncomfortable, and then I archived it. In real life MDs don’t stand in ERs screaming “where is my….!” Like spoiled emperors- if they did no one would trust them. ER personnel regularly treat patients that have just done terrible things to people that they know, OFTEN they treat perpetrators and victims simultaneously and would NEVER stand around and not treat a patient. Female docs don’t wear their long hair down about their shoulders to brush into faces - they pull it out of the way - because it gets in the way of work. A patient who isn’t breathing is breathed for by a ambu-bag before a breathing tube is put in, NO RUSH unless the ambu-bag respiration is unsuccessful and in the instance of acid injestion and possible difficult intubation (breathing tube insertion) 1. Anesthesia would be called pronto 2. No muscle relaxant would be given because it takes away any chance of the patient keeping an airway open 3. No blind intubation would be attempted because it is traumatic to inflamed tissues 4. A surgical airway is safer and faster. A trached patient (emergency trach) CANNOT TALK- the vocal cords are bypassed, and they are likely breathed for by a ventilator. Later, a different tube can changed out for a modified trach and the patient can speak by covering the tube if they are off of the breathing machine and breathing on their own.
I squirmed and was irritated with the tough characterisation of the senior female doctors - maybe true, maybe not - but it all seemed so …. Greys Anatomy, and not up to the usual standard of Greg Hurwitz.
As usual Scott Bricks narration was fab - but he couldn’t salvage this one.

I liked the general overview of the Nazi rise to power as well as the evaluation of previous literature. A great deal of info regarding Eva Braun comes from other individuals bibliographies or testimonies both of which have reason to tell as story beneficial to the storyteller and not necessarily true. The author references other sources such as government memos, requisitions and travel documents.
I’ve listened to the book before but since I’ve learned more about the Nazi perpetrators and laws, I’m getting a great deal more enjoyment listening to this a second time.
The reader is fabulous- she also reads a wonderful book about Norway - Hitlers Northern Utopia and makes that book an excellent listen.

Moderately entertaining story, with interesting take on identity theft. I’m not certain if a cybercrime expert would find it well written but as a civilian it was sufficiently detailed for me. The FBI backstory was very weak and they were very far behind the criminal and seemed to merely be lucky. The biggest problem I had was that the heroine was the best at what she did, and the best looking, and the most loved, and the fastest learner, and the best athlete, the best bartender, best manager…..whatever came her way. I prefer a flawed character and Witness was a much more interesting book. The narrator was fantastic and her interpretation of the characters allowed me to decide to finish the story despite knowing where the plot was headed.

Within 20 min the author erroneously calls Hitlers beloved dog Trudie instead of Blondie. (Trudyl is the name of one of Hitlers’ secretaries.) Also he claims Hitlers’ birthday is August 20th (it’s April 20th). So although this book so far has been very listenable I can’t commit to it since he might have other facts wrong if he blunders on these basic things. I’m not a historian, just interested in the Nazis because - who would do such a thing???? Really. Did an entire country lose their collective minds???? So in most other introductions April 20th and Blondie are mentioned frequently.

I really enjoyed this different take on the excessive spending by the 3rd Reich, the politics of an occupying force, and the manipulative character revelation regarding Speer. I’ve listened to this book at bedtime often since the readers voice is pleasant and the content is unusual for WW2 books.

I’ve seen the film Heroes of the Telemark and this book tells a better story, more complicated, balanced, and physical story - still with a tremendous amount of skiing. These folks were very brave, determined, and fit, holy tomole. One man skied 60 miles in one setting - to get to a lodge, then outski 3 Germans, and then escape a bus whilst dealing with a broken arm (after a fall of a cliff on skis) on his way to a concentration camp to find refuge in a Psychiatric hospital. This telling of the story is far more remarkable.

Covers topics such as dinosaur precursors, feathers, scales, colors, locomotion, evolution, parenting, body habitus, with the scientific data available and argues most sides, comes down on the most reasonable side if there is one and doesn’t if there isn’t one. More than once he reminds the listener that most dinosaur species are made up of a single partial specimen so much cannot be assumed. This is a very interesting book. Also well read since I love David Attenborough and am used to his style of presentation. The reader talks in a conversational manner which is pleasing and engaging, good for the revelatory style of the writing.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More textual James. Less sermonizing. This series of sermons is very anachronistic representing present Christianity and placing it in 50 AD . The Trinity of God,Father/Son/Holy Spirit as one was not agreed upon until the Council of Nicea in 325. Jesus did not believe himself to be God, nor did James. James was a servant of God the Father, not his brother Jesus. James was a Jew and would consider praying to Jesus as idolatry.

What could Skip Heitzig have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Paul was "Salvation by Faith". James said "faith without works is dead";. The author should have brought in more context of the time, 1st century Judaism, and less of his own opiniion

How could the performance have been better?

more accurate history, understanding the context of Jewish Jesus and James

What made the experience of listening to Flowers from the Storm the most enjoyable?

Loved the Story of the Quakers, the Friends and their code of truth telling and lack of vanity and frivolity against the life of a previously spoiled Duke and family. It is not a story conceit - the female character is imperfectly consistent throughout.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Flowers from the Storm?

Maddie meeting the King and the wet-nurse, on the night of the Ball. The entire story of the unwilling admission to the psychiatric facility and the discussion of the treatment and syndrome of almost being ''locked in".

What about Nicholas Boulton’s performance did you like?

He is superb.

Any additional comments?

I left this story for last despite the strong reviews because I did not want to read a story about a Mad Man in an Asylum. I thought that the female character would be a weak loving nurse of some sort. Instead this has been my favorite book and I almost didn't purchase it. Maddie is a wonderful character and the religious story, the mental illness and recovery story are both very strong and relevant for today. I found that I could associate myself with both stories, and the financial burden caused by illness. This is the most approachable story - compared to assassins and Hidden Princesses, that LK has written, and of course it's well written.

Would you consider the audio edition of Out of The Easy to be better than the print version?

Enjoyed the New Orleans accents, so definitely believe the audio version is an excellent way to take in this story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Willie, the Madame. A reluctant Mother, although she would never say so, and very rough character, her back story evolves over the entire book.

Which scene was your favorite?

Altheimers Scene with Charlie and Patrick. Jo wraps herself in an alternative family without requesting accolades. Also sets the stage for Patricks' back story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, walked around doing chores, hobbies, and took the story into the car with me. I love New Orleans and this story is so engaging that very easily time slips by and I could imagine myself in a Storyville. baudy house. The complicated life that real people lead shines through.

Any additional comments?

Terrific drama, with a different kind of family that a young woman develops when she has to choose herself over blood. Jo, her female friends, and the Madame are natively strong women without waving a suffragette banner. Subtle drama set in a whore house.
