Inspiring Behind the Scenes Look into History

What could have been an academic exercise into history became inspiring by bringing to life alternative thoughts and words of undelivered speeches by key historic people. These were voiced by many talented actors and put in context by the author. What was President John F. Kennedy prepared to deliver in Texas on the fateful day of his assassination? Hillery Clinton 's victory speech is here, too, as well as many more. The author's passion for telling their stories is proven by his thoroughness in putting them on the record for us to enjoy. I hope you will enjoy them, too.

This is the first novel by Nelson DeMille that I’ve read, and I enjoyed the characters and the setting, although I don’t expect to ever see Yemen myself. The constant sarcasm of the main character, interspersed with gripping action scenes are very entertaining. And painlessly learning about the environment and culture of this tortured land is a bonus. The author has written other stories with this character, but this one reads fine by itself.

What a wide-ranging story. This has a wealthy leader of a gaming company, a kidnapped hostage, Russians, jihadists, Chinese hackers, spies, smugglers, and survivalists. It’s a long story, which is what I was looking for, giving you plenty of time to know all the players. You want action? There’s plenty, but not without quieter interludes, too. I especially liked how different characters became important in different chapters. Very entertaining, good storytelling.

I love this story! Yes, I grew up during the 80's and enjoyed all the geeky references. Yes, the characters were well drawn, and the games they played were familiar to me. I'm going to read it again, right away. Well worth your credit.

What if travelling to the stars took generations?

This story works on two levels: exploring space without any unrealistic "warp drive" and exploring the feelings of the voyagers born on the ship. The ship is travelling at 0.1 light speed, on a journey to Tau Ceti that will take 170 years. They plan to colonize a new world, and are living in "biomes" to survive the trip. The story focuses on the generation who arrived at the Tau Ceti system, and the next generation, who tried to settle there. No spoilers, but they have to solve one problem after another. You want to see what they will do. They are on their own, since it takes 23 years each way for any communications with Earth.

The actress reading the story is excellent at giving different voices to the characters. She was a good complement to the author's vision.

I have listened to this book twice, and love it. It's hugely entertaining, a great story (astronaut inadvertantly left behind on Mars), excellent acting (he acted the story, not just read it), full of excitement and plot twists. I know you've heard it before, but this is better than the movie. Even if you saw the movie, this book will surprise you, repeatedly. This is a story about astronauts, there are no aliens, no "magic" science beyond what we see today. It could take place within my lifetime, it's believable. You watch the astronaut as he struggles daily to literally keep himself alive, despite the hostile environment outside the tent, called the "hab." He's a problem-solver using science and creativity, and he keeps his sense of humor. You can't help but cheer when things go right, and groan when they go wrong. Highly recommended.

What if you lived your life again, remembering the previous?

Harry August lives his life to his death, then is born again into the same life, remembering everything he went through before. This is a great concept, well developed in this story. Harry's reactions are belivable, and each life builds on what he experienced before. The narrator does a good job and speaks each character in their own voice. If this sounds interesting to you, I recommend it.

A closeup view of the working poor in America

This story is great at putting a face on the plight of the working poor. The writer tried to support herself on low wage jobs in several different states. I felt sympathy for her fellow workers--the waitresses, nurse aides, and Walmart associates--as they tried to stretch too few dollars to cover basic necessities, while their employers made them feel they were lucky to have a job at all.

The performance by Christine McMurdo-Wallis was lively when telling the stories as she voiced different personalities for the characters. However, she had less to work with in the chapters that focused on economic overviews for the way things are. I enjoyed getting this wider view of the extent of the problems, but it was quite a contrast from the personal narrative chapters.

I was disappointed to find out this is not a recent story. The writer took this journey of discovery quite a while ago, before the housing bubble burst. It is shocking to learn that these conditions existed even during the times before the recession. I would love to have the same story in today's context. Housing costs are the villian of this story, as these workers often had to spend more than half their income to live in substandard conditions, and the author points out that affordable housing has become more and more scarce as the need for it has gone up.

If you need a realistic point of view to judge the proposals from economic and political experts as they try to fix America, you should listen to this book.
