Historia
On the first snowy night of winter, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope sets off for her home in the hills. Though the road is familiar, she misses a turning and soon becomes lost and disorientated. A car has skidded off the narrow road in front of her, its door left open, and she stops to help. There is no driver to be seen, so Vera assumes that the owner has gone to find help. But a cry calls her back: a toddler is strapped in the back seat.

fun & easy listening
Revisado: 10-11-24
Enjoyed listening to book while working on project. Narrator clear & different characters had distinct enough voices. Kept me guessing until end. Story progressed without extraneous details irrelevant to plot. Also jives well with TV show.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

weakest in series
Revisado: 09-16-24
Disappointing & not same vibe as previous books. Like other reviews will agree characters inconsistent; esp Sara, Matthew & Ysabeau. Diana seems vain & whole clan is just too gifted. Too many family names tossed around making hard keep track on audible. Storyline kind of boring. Left room several times & didn't miss any action. Ending anticlimactic leaving me less anxious for another book in series.

Revisado: 06-14-24
Read 1st few books after seeing Kilbourn mystery movies years ago. Really enjoyed. Finally resumed & very disappointed. Don't recall earlier series being so boring. Lot extraneous dialogue & descriptive narrative, notably about food, drink, exercise. Not sure if I would call this a mystery. Zero suspense, baddies are transparent. Filled with political prattle. In 2024 tired of all conniving bad actors trying put their "narrative" in place & bleeding tax payer for personal gain. Most characters are in this game. Surprised character from last book returned being redeemed after gaslighted a woman into suicide. This book definately win win for those who worship progressives that live perfect lives in an ivory tower and think they know what's best for everyone.

Historia
Joanne’s husband Zack is the leading progressive candidate in a neck-and-neck race, with the existing mayor, for Regina’s top job. The tough campaigning is well underway when a disturbing threat disrupts the celebration for the opening of the Racette-Hunter Centre — a project Zack has been spearheading, intended to benefit the impoverished community of North Central Regina. Joanne soon realizes that sinister interests are working behind the scenes of the election, and another savage act makes clear that someone will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo.

not best in series
Revisado: 06-05-24
Read earlier Kilbourn books years ago. This didn't meet my expectations. Felt main characters well intentioned but misguided do-gooders. People around them morally bankrupt & easily forgiven. Thought Jo was amateur sleuth of sorts, but often portrayed as clueless. Didn't recognize gaslighting, didn't offer take friend to real MD, no autopsy. Many serious flaws. Conclusion fell flat. Surprised I persevered thru this. Narrator was easy to understand, but often felt like I was listening to cheesy soap opera. Book does convey lot of today's reality. Elites who think they understand the down trodden & think they're gonna fix everyone with "their" agenda.

relevant but too many issues
Revisado: 05-17-24
Author covers uncomfortable current issues with empathy. Racism, anti-racism, long term care, FGM, adultery, sibling rivalry, abuse & violence, misogyny. Gets overwhelming. Many characters highly flawed, make huge mistakes & very hypocritical. Good attempt at showing a different culture not integrating well at times in London due to lack of understanding & unusual traditions. Women still 3rd class citizens. Wonder if author knows some her characters show complete contempt for place they moved to. Author scoffs at English white people drinking tea. Appreciate she brings attention to horrific FGM problem tho. Lynley & gang suffer from personal issues here & don't communicate or listen to one another. Agree with others this book needed editing. Too long & ending fell flat. Many characters abrasive.

excellent detective drama
Revisado: 05-14-24
Lynley & Havers investigating dark side at college campus starting with suspect suicide. Many flawed characters, including students & parents. Great job portraying struggles of substance abuse. Takes helicopter parenting to next level. Theme of sexual promiscuity or deviance which envelopes the mystery. Suspenseful to the end as multitude of loose ends tied up. Love the ending.

Here is a tautly paced investigation of one the 20th century's most audacious art frauds, which generated hundreds of forgeries - many of them still hanging in prominent museums and private collections today. Historia
Art scams are today so numerous that the specter of a lawsuit arising from a mistaken attribution has scared a number of experts away from the business of authentication and forgery, and with good reason. Art scams are increasingly convincing and involve incredible sums of money. The cons perpetrated by unscrupulous art dealers and their accomplices are proportionately elaborate. Anthony M. Amore's The Art of the Con tells the stories of some of history's most notorious yet untold cons.

fascinating insight
Revisado: 03-25-24
Stories about forgers intrigue me. Each chapter reviews particular "scam". Author explains intricate details on how "con" works, background on con artist & dupes with final result. Good read for anyone. Good example of how corrupt systems get, excess greed turning people into sociopaths. Good look into why all of us capable of being duped. Lot of psychology behind the stories.

Best books ever.
Revisado: 03-13-24
Finishing last book in series is emotionally draining. Esp knowing the author passed away fairly young & no more to come. Mysterious, brutal, romantic, melancholic, funny, insightful. Unfortunately human frailty and cruelty described in post war Barcelona evident in today's time. Makes you wonder if people will ever wake up to myriad of greedy actors continually running society for themselves. But the Sempere family perseveres and at the end you are left with hope.
