Historia
In Sailing True North, Admiral Stavridis offers lessons of leadership and character from the lives and careers of history's most significant naval commanders. He also brings a lifetime of reflection to bear on the subjects of his study—naval history, the vocation of the admiral, and global geopolitics. Above all, this is a book that will help you navigate your own life's voyage: the voyage of leadership of course, but more important, the voyage of character. Sailing True North helps us find the right course to chart.

Interesting overview of great naval commanders
Revisado: 03-20-25
First, I want to thank the author for his service to our country. Having served decades as an admiral himself, he developed an interest in the great commanders who came before him, dating all the way back to the ancient Greeks. He gives us an interesting historical survey with lots of character analysis, and does a good job describing the early years of each man. My only suggestion would be to include more in-battle details, so that we would know why these individuals were truly great. Particularly in the case of Nimitz, arguably the greatest admiral America has ever produced, his section is strong on early years and accolades, and light on actual in-battle details. Still, if one is somewhat familiar with at least most of these great men, this book may prove an interesting supplement.

Insightful but incomplete
Revisado: 03-06-25
Overall this book was interesting and well written. However, calling it “the biography” is a little misleading. The author spends almost as much time describing Trump‘s grandfather‘s life as he does Trump himself. We hear many of the salient details of the president‘s life, but we also hear a great deal of analysis and at times even sugarcoating of some aspects, such as his infidelities. One could wish for a little more chronological recounting, year by year, important event by event, rather than quite so much extemporizing about his personality and quirks. Still, I enjoyed the book overall and would recommend it.

I enjoyed the San Francisco Bay area setting and the genuine humanity of the characters. The book was refreshingly clean except for a few unnecessary references to female anatomy.

Historia
Sailing to Newfoundland documents a solo journey on a 40' sailboat from Florida to the remote and uninhabited fjords of the south coast of Newfoundland, one of the few places in the world where raw, unspoiled nature meets the ocean and provides sheltered anchorages. From the author of Becoming a Sailor, Journey to the Ragged Islands, and Chasing the Nomadic Dream, this book puts you in the cockpit, and in the fjords, and on top of glacier-cut mountains in the remote backcountry of Newfoundland.

Interesting and unusual
Revisado: 12-23-24
I enjoyed this book, which could be appreciated on many levels. On the one hand, it is a guide to the stunning geography of the western half of Newfoundland's South Coast, as explored by sailboat. On the other hand, it is an interesting reflection of a solo sailor who shares almost every detail of his summer trip: what he eats, how he maintains his 41' sailboat, the weather he experiences, and even the geographic coordinates of his anchorages. You might say we are given a kind of audio reality show, in which an excellent sailor describes both his technique and even his breaks from sailing - for example, his hikes ashore, his fishing successes (and occasional failures), his editing of another sailor's book when internet is available, and the novels he reads when not preoccupied with other matters. This is not a comprehensive cruising guide to the province, but it would be a wonderful supplement for anyone who is considering sailing these waters - or that matter, sailing up the East Coast to get there. My only suggestion would be to have the reading done by a trained actor.

Historia
Alaska: A History begins by examining the region’s geography and the Native peoples who inhabited it for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. The Russians claimed northern North America by right of discovery in 1741. During their occupation of “Russian America”, the region was little more than an outpost for fur hunters and traders. When the czar sold the territory to the United States in 1867, nobody knew what to do with “Seward’s Folly”.

A detailed history of the 49th state
Revisado: 10-07-24
This is a thorough and interesting account of the history of a state with which many Americans may not be familiar. Several chapters are devoted to the early Russian exploration and settlement, followed by a good account of the conflict between great powers like great Britain and the United States attempting to make claims. We see the gradual development in the early 20th century from territory to statehood in 1959. Unfortunately, as the authors describe the late 20th and early 21st centuries, they lapse into an almost unreadable mountain of statistical information that is frankly not of interest to the average reader. Also, only former vice presidential candidate and Alaska native Sarah Palin receives a deep scrutiny of her religion, while all the other important names in Alaska history are given a pass.

Historia
The Hudson’s Bay Company started out small in 1670, trading practical manufactured goods for furs with the indigenous inhabitants of inland subarctic Canada. Controlled by a handful of English aristocrats, it expanded into a powerful political force that ruled the lives of many thousands of people - from the lowlands south and west of Hudson Bay, to the tundra, the great plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific Northwest.

An in-depth history of central Canada
Revisado: 08-30-24
For the most part this is a wonderfully detailed, fascinating history of a lesser known part of North America: the discovery and settlement of the vast interior of Canada. Hudson Bay is a rather inhospitable place, yet courageous and visionary men from England made it a profitable shipping depot. The fact that the Hudson Bay Company has been around for 400 years is truly astonishing. The only reason I did not give the book 5 stars is that the author periodically lapses into a kind of anti-European or even anti-American and anti-Canadian sentiment, favoring tribes over settlers. The most egregious example of this was the description of the great Lord Selkirk, who single-handedly laid the foundation of modern-day Winnipeg. For some reason, not disturbing buffalo ranges and canoe routes was, in the author’s mind, more important than the peaceful agricultural settlements that the great Lord was establishing. Still, I would highly recommend the book.

Leonard Bernstein stood at the epicenter of 20th-century American musical life. His creative gifts knew no boundaries, as he moved easily from the podium, to the piano, to television with his nationally celebrated Young People’s Concerts, which introduced an entire generation to the joy of classical music. In this fascinating new biography, the breadth of Bernstein’s musical composition is explored, through the spectacular range of music he composed—from West Side Story to Kaddish to A Quiet Place and beyond—and through his intensely public role as an internationally celebrated conductor.

Revisado: 07-11-24
A wonderful and detailed account of this most important American musician. Every work of significance is given detailed analysis, the conducting career is described accurately, and the important individuals in his life are also drawn with sensitivity.
The only part that slightly bothered me was the author’s sermonizing about politics in the latter portion of Bernstein‘s life.

Perhaps no conflict in American history is more important yet more overlooked and misunderstood than the War of 1812. At the climax of the war, inspired by the defeat of Napoleon in early 1814 and the perceived illegality of the Louisiana Purchase, the British devised a plan to launch a three-pronged attack against the Northern, Eastern, and Southern US borders.

Extremely detailed and thorough
Revisado: 04-28-24
This is a welcome and in-depth look at an often neglected war. I found myself thinking that this was really the second half of the American Revolution, and perhaps it is appropriate that our national anthem was written near its conclusion. The author does a good job of explaining how most of the fighting took place either at sea, in lakes, or as a result of British fleets attempting to conquer small pieces of our coastline. I was not aware of British atrocities, nor of General Andrew Jackson’s great leadership in this very bloody and prolonged conflict. Apparently some historians belittle, distort, or omit essential facts about this pivotal episode in our history, but the author is quick to call them out and present the truth. The narrator is clear but he could do a little work on his accents and his Latin pronunciation.

From an eminent scholar of the American South, the first full-scale biography of Thomas Jefferson since 1970. Not since Merrill Peterson's Thomas Jefferson and the New Nation has a scholar attempted to write a comprehensive biography of the most complex Founding Father. In Jefferson, John B. Boles plumbs every facet of Thomas Jefferson's life, all while situating him amid the sweeping upheaval of his times. We meet Jefferson the politician and political thinker - as well as Jefferson the architect, scientist, bibliophile, paleontologist, musician, and gourmet.

This is a wonderful biography of one of Americas’s greatest presidents. From his writing of the Declaration of Independence to his establishment of the Monticello mansion to his Louisiana purchase and his 2-term Presidency to his creation of the University of Virginia, Jefferson’s accomplishments are explained in detail, yet with a wonderfully human touch. I felt like I knew the man so well that I could sit down to dinner with him. Yes, the question of slavery is repeatedly addressed, but it is done with balance and honesty rather than with the kind of obsessive derision of white Southerners common in the works of other current authors. I greatly enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed this book overall because I never really understood Napoleon's life and legacy. All of the significant details are included, from his origins in Corsica through his marriage to Josephine, his major battles, and his eventual exile. However, for an "hourglass" history, this is more like a two-hourglass history. We are constantly being reminded not only what happened in Napoleon's life, but, with dramatic emphasis, how important he was, how transformative he was, how significant to later European history he was, etc.
