Historia
Josh Duffy is staring into the abyss. A decorated army veteran turned military contractor, his last mission went sideways, leaving him badly injured and his career derailed. Now, he’s working as a mall cop, trying to keep his family one step ahead of the bill collectors. So when a chance at redemption - and a big pay day - comes his way, Duff eagerly jumps in. The job - to ride shotgun on a motorcade of heavily armed and armored vehicles as they roll into Mexico’s cartel country.

Shallow, disappointing
Revisado: 04-11-25
The dialogue is horrid, the dramatization forced and ridiculous. Do not waste your time. This seems thrown together, and is a sketch of a bad novel.

Historia
In Shepherds for Sale, Megan Basham of the Daily Wire documents how progressive powerbrokers—from George Soros, to the founder of eBay, to former members of the Obama administration—set out to change the American church. Their goal: to co-opt evangelicals for political purposes.

Well researched analysis of the progressive takeover of churches
Revisado: 01-30-25
Megan Basham’s courage in writing this book is commendable. Leftist ideology has captured many evangelical churches and institutions. The moving conclusion demonstrates that this is not just a political statement for her, or from a contentious spirit. The cheap gospel is no gospel at all, and without hard truths the church loses her mission.

Historia
Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this new edition - now with a foreword by Michael W. Smith, testimony by Rich Mullins and the author's own epilogue, "Ragamuffin Ten Years Later," Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth.

Repetitive, smug, judgmental
Revisado: 08-09-21
In his quest to remove the judgment of God and dismiss the call to repentance, Manning repeatedly judges those whom he finds lacking. Manning's universalism is a false gospel. Avoid.

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Balanced, well-researched book
Revisado: 07-14-21
Excellent work based on thorough research and many interviews. Shrier’s careful analysis makes clear parents, schools, medical and mental health professionals need to provide children with the help they truly need, not simply letting them self-diagnose. Required reading for anyone with a daughter.

Historia
What is our fascination with the other side? Join investigative reporter Billy Hallowell as he delves into the strange phenomena of supernatural activity. Themes of demonic possession, exorcism, and ghosts have overtaken Hollywood, with countless films and TV shows delving into the age-old struggle against evil. But the question is why? Even with so much focus on the topic, there seems to be very little public knowledge and discussion about the theology and real-life claims surrounding demons.

Shallow treatment of a deep issue
Revisado: 11-28-20
This book reads like a collection of high school papers. Frequent citations of websites, indiscriminate quotations from authors, no synthesis of major ideas.
The narrator is annoyingly unserious. He slips into a southern drawl when voicing a demon, and uses other hillbilly accents when voicing a quoted source.

Historia
In this powerful audiobook by the acclaimed spiritual leader and best-selling writer, one he calls his "most important", he analyzes the profound spiritual, moral, and political crisis in the contemporary world. He says that he "considers that the decadence of our time has all the faces of mortal peril." His finding is simple: Our world is on the brink of the abyss.

Disappointingly Shallow
Revisado: 07-27-20
Cardinal Sarah has moments of great insight and spiritual depth. Regrettably these are buried beneath shallow exegesis and spurious cliches. Among the disappointments are the historical inaccuracies related to clerical celibacy. The argument for papal supremacy has no depth at all. His antagonism toward America and democracy, and papering over the evils of Russian aggression, make his “conservative” theology at home among today’s Marxists.
The narrator is competent for general reading, but the frequent mispronunciations of ecclesiastical terms, and particularly Latin phrases, made it difficult to listen to at points.

Historia
In 1958, the US Air Force nuked the moon as a show of military force. In 1967, the CIA sent live cats to spy on the Soviet government. In 1942, the British built a torpedo-proof aircraft carrier out of an iceberg. Of course, none of these things ever actually happened. But in Nuking the Moon, intelligence historian Vince Houghton proves that abandoned plans can be just as illuminating - and every bit as entertaining - as the ones that made it.

Decent concept ruined by incessant snark
Revisado: 06-19-20
The idea behind this book is terrific. However, there is almost no appreciation (it does come out in a very minute way toward the end) of the purpose behind these projects: scientists trying in every way they can to serve their country and save lives. Not just every story, but seemingly every paragraph is told with sneering condescension. The snark gets old very fast, and it is magnified by the author himself dripping contempt into the narration. Houghton would have benefited from a good editor, and someone else reading the book.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

Perfect

This amazing book is expertly narrated. It in many ways is my perfect book: a murder mystery in a monastery, with medieval politics, ecclesial intrigue, an obsession with language and texts, a mysterious library, and forbidden love. Eco was a genius.

Historia
Justice Anthony Kennedy slipped out of the Supreme Court building on June 27, 2018, and traveled incognito to the White House to inform President Donald Trump that he was retiring, setting in motion a political process that his successor, Brett Kavanaugh, would denounce three months later as a "national disgrace" and a "circus". Justice on Trial, the definitive insider's account of Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court, is based on extraordinary access to more than 100 key figures - including the president, justices, and senators - in that ferocious political drama.

Gripping behind-the-scenes account
Revisado: 07-20-19
Justice on Trial is a thoroughly researched, gripping account of the nomination, character assassination, and Senate hearings for SCOTUS Justice Brett Kavanaugh. This book reads like a thriller, while conveying substantive background on the key players and relevant history of the Supreme Court. The authors do an exceptional job arguing for a depoliticized nomination/confirmation process.
The narration by Hemingway and Severino is very well done; I appreciated hearing the book in their own voices.
