This is the first book in a fascinating new historical mystery series, set in Kiev, Ukraine in 1919, at the height of the civil war between the Soviets, democratic Ukrainians and what was left of the old imperial Russian forces. The main character, Samson Kolechko, is a sympathetic and optimistic survivor navigating his way in very treacherous waters as a police investigator.
I’ve heard Andrey Kurkov referred to as Ukraine’s answer to Boris Akunin (whose mysteries I’ve really enjoyed), but I think he’s considerably more than that. Superbly written, insightful and with a touch of magical realism, this series is well worth your time. Please translate the other books in the series as soon as possible!

Unexpected Delight!

I purchased this because I love both mysteries and historical fiction, but had never heard of the author, so wasn’t sure what to expect. Well written, with an engaging heroine and accurate period detail for this story set in 1920s era NYC. Hope this is the start of a series!

Compelling start to mystery series set in 1939s Italy

I was at first put off by the detective's apparent ability to "see" dead people, but the author primarily uses this as a metaphor for empathetic observation of the cruel inequities existing in fascist 1930s Naples. Good writing and strong characterizations in a dramatic setting. Will download the second book in this series.

Abridged version has ruined this story!

Would have given this 4 stars but for the completely unnecessary abridgment, which quite ruined the story and character development. I might understand abridging a 600 page novel, but not one of regular length!

Good story, terrificly atmospheric, somewhat spoiled by an amateurish narrator (who mangled German pronunciation, too). Still worth a listen though.
