Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

As funny as the musical
Revisado: 02-08-25
For those of us who wondered how the sausage was made when developing a musical, this is a great listen. Behind the scenes efforts, dispute resolution, collaboration and more with the author’s extraordinary humor wrapping up everything.

Interesting story, well told
Revisado: 12-28-24
This reads like both a small town gothic and true crime procedural. As a lawyer, I appreciated much of the vital, not-too-thrilling aspects of putting on a case. A healthy modesty and yet pride in his meticulous preparation of this case allowed for a thorough empathy for the author and his client. A really strong book.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Extraordinarily important book
Revisado: 11-02-24
Every parent, young adult and teen should read this book which confirms with strong research much of the concern you’ve likely felt about the challenges of kids growing up with more tech and helicopter/snowplow parents and less play and independence than previous eras.
There are common sense suggestions and strategies that should be blueprints for understanding and guiding young people through the challenges of phone-based lives. Incredibly well-done social psychology.

Historia
Disinformation is designed to evoke a strong emotional response to push us toward more extreme views, unable to find common ground with others. The false claims that led to the breathtaking attack on our Capitol in 2020 may have been only a dress rehearsal. Attack from Within shows us how to prevent it from happening again, thus preserving our country's hard-won democracy.

Must-read for anyone exhausted by the shameless lies
Revisado: 08-05-24
McQuaid, a law professor, breaks down the truth behind the lies like only one schooled in teaching can. She makes clear declarative statements in support of easily understandable section headings, all with real-life examples that prove her valuable points in rapid succession.
She is an extraordinary writer telling the most important political story of our lifetimes. Ignore her at our mutual peril.

A fascinating story told by a fascinating woman
Revisado: 06-29-24
I am a voracious reader who chose this book because I thought it would be a semi-salacious break from heavier fare. Like many, I severely and unfairly underestimated Crystal Harris. This story could have been shallow and gossipy, with name-dropping indiscretions but it was so much more. The author has an incredible story to tell, shared with great candor, self-examination, empathy and courage. She doesn’t blame, but more often reveals the multiple layers that comprise the main characters in her life. She takes inventory of her own issues but is not self-flagellating and she discusses levels of Hefner that pop-culture scholars cannot. I hope she completes her psychology studies and enters that profession. She has great wisdom and insight about the human condition that would benefit others. A truly great book.

Epic ending to an epic tale
Revisado: 04-17-24
Don Winslow is one of the all-time greats of popular fiction. This trilogy is a perfectly ambitious conclusion to a remarkable career. To prepare for vol 3 I went back to the first two books and I’m glad I did. The story is so full of great characters, intricate plotting, laughter and sorrow that one benefits from repeated listens.
Also, the narration is maybe the consistently best I’ve heard, taking on dozens of characters and expressing each of their personalities and idiosyncrasies individually and consistently through the many years of the books.
Superb writing and performance make this the finale to the best trilogy I can remember.

Historia
In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history. Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.

Impressive
Revisado: 02-16-24
It would have been easy to get a ghost writer to interview the subject and write a fascinating story. This book was clearly written by Britney, with no embellishments. She speaks her truth and wins one’s heart by discussing her strengths and moments of weakness while leading with her passion and desire to be a good person. I’ve long been a casual fan but now have great admiration for fending off the difficult situations laid in her path by the people she trusted most. Great book.

Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Excellent, important book
Revisado: 02-15-24
I am not a religious nan but Tim Alberta is and it is this background which makes his reporting and excellent writing so important in a world ripped apart by lack of empathy and understanding on all sides of the religious/political divides. Alberta respects and illuminates the wide-ranging views of true-believers and non-believers alike, shining a harsh light on the hypocrisy and meanness spewed in God’s name. Smart, compassionate and well-versed in the Scriptures that have shaped his life and belief system, Alberta demands only that the listener question their true motives and goals. Extraordinary work by a well-reasoned reporter who respects his subjects.

Historia
My name is Betty. I have depression. I have passion. I have tits the size of printers. And also: I have a brain full of women. There’s Blanche VonF--kery, Ingrid St. Rash, and a host of others—some cowering in sweatpants, some howling plans for revolution, and one, oh God, and one . . . slowly vomiting up a crow? Worried for her. These women take turns at the wheel. That’s why I feel like a million selves. With a raised eyebrow and a soul-scalpel, I’d like to tell you how I got this way. Because maybe you feel this way too.

Five stars seem too few…
Revisado: 02-15-24
I am a lifelong, voracious reader and now consume as many audiobooks as I can. Ms. Gilpin’s book is now one of my all-time favorites. I believe Dorothy Parker herself would be awed by the verbal virtuosity, poignancy and laser-focused social commentary shown in literally every page of this book, made only more effective by the exquisite narration. I have enjoyed the author’s skills as an actress for years but would never have guessed that those prodigious talents would pale in the face of her skills as a writer. I replayed chapter after chapter to ensure I didn’t miss a word. Extraordinary work.
