I found Trust to be a compelling and well-written novel for the most part. The structure and format were original and engaging, and I was genuinely impressed by Diaz’s ability to weave different narratives and perspectives together so effectively.

However, the final chapter left me disappointed. It introduced a twist that, in my view, undercut the richness and complexity of the story that had been so carefully built up until that point. It felt abrupt and out of place—almost as if it was added for political correctness or to tick a box, rather than to deepen the story.

It’s a shame, because up until then, I thought the book was excellent. The ending, unfortunately, diminished my overall experience.

While this book presents some valid points, it falls short in providing a comprehensive understanding of the broader context and how the world operates. The author's tone consistently leans towards the left of center, often adopting a high-moral stance.

Much to my disappointment, the author deemed it necessary to criticize both Andrew Bridgen and, in a later chapter, Viktor Orban.

This is a great little book that builds on Dr. Daniels's (T. Dalrymple) work as a psychiatrist, as described in his non-fiction work "Life at the Bottom." The author's insightful exploration further deepens our understanding of the human condition, offering profound insights into the complexities of society and the human psyche.

A remarkable life story, but could have been told without all the ranting about racism and without all that irrelevant personal info.
Blaming racism for her father's abusive nature and her rapist brother goes too far and serves no purpose. Same goes for Mrs. Davis's extensive ranting how most black and other men don't find too dark and masculine looking women attractive. Most men don't like women with masculine features attractive, regardless of their skin color. That too, has nothing to do with systemic racism. Just like most women don't find men with feminine features too attractive.

Then all the info about how much and what she ate at different occasions, her various health problems described in detail - the book could have gone without it.

Also, what's up with that overly upbeat narrating of the book at times. Curb your enthusiasm, lady! I honestly can't tell what is more annoying Viola Davis's upbeat intonation of many a paragraph in her book or Jordan Peterson's sobbing when he reads his own work.

I love Bret and Heather's podcast Dark Horse, I regularly listen to entire episodes and I was looking forward to this book. Having said that, the book came as a disappointment. I didn't find it very well thought out, I dare say it's poorly structured, at times unnecessarily technical and uninteresting.
I expected a book complimentary and maybe even an extension to Yuval Harari's Sapiens - needless to say my expectations were not met.

One other thing, I found their narration of this book lacking, to say the least. This too came as a surprise as I enjoy listening to both of them on their podcast where the content is largely, if not entirely, unscripted. Here, their voices sounded monotonous, sometimes even border-line nervous.

could have been a decent feel-good book, if it weren't for the fact that the author tried too hard too make it too cute

I liked this book a lot. I knew very little about Sholokhov, having read Quiet Don only recently. Being a fan of Soviet history, especially the Stalin era, I was pleased to find details that not even Stalin's biographers like Kotkin and Montefiore mention in their works.
It's totally fascinating to me how Stalin amidst the famine, purges and even the WWII found the time to micromanage.

Stefan Rudnicki is a superb narrator

I want to start by saying that never before have I given a 2 star rating on Audible. As a matter of fact I’ve only given a 3 star rating once in the past.

This, unfortunately, is not a good book on any level, by any stretch of the imagination. It is not particularly well written, it is not very amusing and it is certainly not funny. It is not educational, it does not portrait an era nor the world we live in a meaningful and truthful way. Its characters are caricaturish and the author persistently tries to depict them as adorable. I couldn’t find any literary or entertaining value in it.

Instead, this is a book in which the author goes out of his way to be extremely “cute” and exceedingly politically correct, to the point where it becomes utterly annoying. I’ll say annoying although I could easily use a much harsher word.

This book is like a bad Netflix show that one finishes through inertia and not because it adds value to life.

It is a pity since Backman has some talent and the book is fairly well structured. I'm sure he could write a much better book if he only wasn't trying so desperately to be cute, politically correct and induce tears throughout the entire book.
