Historia
One rainy night, the unthinkable happens: Dylan Moran’s car plunges off the road into a raging river, his beautiful wife drowning as he struggles to shore. In the aftermath, through his grief, Dylan experiences sudden, strange visions: wherever he goes, he’s haunted by glimpses of himself. Dylan initially chalks it up to trauma, but that changes when he runs into a psychiatrist who claims he’s her patient. She says he has been undergoing a unique hypnotherapy treatment built on the idea that with every choice, he creates an infinite number of parallel universes.

I'm not sure I've read a lot of Brian Freeman's work before, but I could not stop listening to this story of an imperfect hero who is up against such a difficult situation.

In the 1980s, Lawrence Block developed an interactional seminar that adapted elements of the human potential movement specifically for writers. For several years, he and his wife, Lynne, traveled the country conducting seminars that focused on the inner game of writing and designed to enable participants to get out of their own way and put their best work on paper.

Audio is a great format for this book
Revisado: 08-11-21
I guess anyone can see from my reviews that I'm a big fan of Lawrence Block, so I've actually already read this book & worked through some of these exercises before. However, I was pleased to discover the audiobook format, as it's perfect for this material. You feel like the author is talking to you in a direct conversational style that's very supportive. The narrator sounds so friendly & approachable.

Historia
Emery Hazard and his boyfriend, John-Henry Somerset, just want to enjoy the day at the Dore County Independence Fair. At the shooting gallery, though, Hazard comes face to face with one of his old bullies: Mikey Grames. Even as a drugged-out wreck, Mikey is a reminder of all the ugliness in Hazard’s past. And Mikey seems to know something Hazard doesn’t - something about the fresh tension brewing in town. When the Chief of Police interrupts Hazard’s day at the fair, she has a strange request. She doesn’t want Hazard and Somers to solve a murder. She wants them to prevent one.

At times, you honestly doubt our heroes can survive. Every time you think the suspense is ratcheted as far as it can go, it goes harder.

Historia
Ever since a shred of shrapnel did a number on his brain's sleep center, Even Tanner has been awake 24/7. This gives him more time than your average underachiever. Time to learn the world's languages (he's fluent in Basque, but has trouble with Chinese). Time to embrace the world's lost causes and irredentist movements (The Flat Earth Society, the League for the Restoration of Cilician Armenia, the Society of the Left Hand).

a darker turn for Evan Tanner...
Revisado: 06-18-20
Asked to rescue an obnoxious Nazi from a Czech castle, Tanner has to find a way to satisfy his mysterious employer in the US intelligence community, get the intel for America, and execute some delayed justice on one horrible excuse for a human being. As always, there's a great sense of time and place, and the various border crossings remind you of all the different countries that were, then weren't, now they're back again...
I like the narrator's voice but a couple of spots remain where he stumbles and repeats a line and forgot to edit out the stumble. Otherwise, he did a great job with all the different voices and accents.
Looking forward to the next!

Great fun for fans of classic suspense
Revisado: 06-02-20
One of the fun things about older books is that trip down memory lane. Imagine a time when the US State Department might send someone across the pond to perform at a music festival... Of course, our girl is going to find a lot more than a hunky Irish guy and a few new songs for the album. I won't post spoilers but I suggest you listen carefully to the songs she collects. You may get some foreshadowing...

In Thirty, the novel pretended to be a diary. That worked fine, and the resultant narrative proved at once challenging and effortless to sustain. I enjoyed writing it, Berkley enjoyed publishing it - and they wanted something else. What they got in Threesome was a novel pretending to be a novel. The premise, as you’ll see, is that the book has been written by its three main characters, Harry and Rhoda and Priss, in the form of a lightly fictionalized chronicle of their own life as a menage a trois.

a fun fast FFM "vintage" erotica listen
Revisado: 05-20-20
I'm not a regular reader of contemporary menage, but I couldn't pass by the chance to listen to this short novel from the author's erotica writing days. As always with this author, there's a strong sense of time & place, a great sense of humor, and a fast-moving story with an escalating variety of scenes.
In a very real sense this is a menage romance, but contemporary romance often shies away from any outside sexual adventures, As a vintage title, this book does include scenes where characters step outside the growing thruple. If that upsets you, well, it was a different time...

Revisado: 05-12-20
The Boystown series is more than a mystery series. The author does an amazing job of capturing a time and a place. Amazing narration too. This one has a special place in my heart because of Nick's first encounters with Terry and Father Joseph, two of my favorite characters.

involving gay mystery about police corruption
Revisado: 05-12-20
As a rule of thumb, I like to listen to audiobooks on the shorter side, but I always make an exception for this author. A complex story of police corruption is told from the POV of two private investigators- one of them a former victim motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of the terrible events of his past. Plenty of twists & turns as well as a well-developed gay romance. Great narrator, you can tell he's having a lot of fun with the banter between the two lead characters.

Forty years ago, triplets Miriam, Louise, and Edward were swept up in a case of rural mass hysteria. Coerced into fabricating unspeakable lies about their first-grade teacher and her adult son, they were complicit in destroying two lives. Ever since, they have believed they are being followed by a presence still seeking retribution for their childhood sins. Unless their guilty consciences are conjuring as many monsters as their innocent minds once did.

Revisado: 04-29-20
This topic of unreliable memory is a natural for this author. The short story is a perfect length for me, but I would also love to see if he does more with these characters or a similar situation in a full-length novel.

Historia
One morning in the spring of 1958 I woke up in my room at the Hotel Alexandria with a paralyzing hangover (which was not unusual) and an idea for a book (which was). I sat in front of my typewriter, and within a few hours I had produced a chapter-by-chapter outline of a novel. I had all the characters sketched out and knew how they'd relate to one another, and how the rather elementary storyline would resolve itself. I even had a title: Shadows.

Makes you stop & think how times have changed!
Revisado: 02-18-20
Originally written as a lesbian romance in the late 50s/early 60s, Shadows is probably better described today as a slice of life or coming of age story about a naive girl with a crush on her girlfriend who comes to the Big Apple. The narration is great, and the description of the angst and attitudes of the time feel pretty true to life, but don't go in assuming that the story will follow the contemporary conventions for lesbian romance. This is a vintage piece that reflects the time it was written. It really makes you stop and think about how the whole romance genre has changed, esp. LGBT romance. Also, I keep picturing the male main character as a Bob Dylan playing in Cafe Wha, so that's always fun. However, some of you don't want any male love interests or MF sex scenes in a lesbian romance novel, and in that case... this is not your book. However, for those who enjoy bisexual fiction with a pretty even balance of FF and MF sex scenes, this is a fun listen.
