Historia
On the first snowy night of winter, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope sets off for her home in the hills. Though the road is familiar, she misses a turning and soon becomes lost and disorientated. A car has skidded off the narrow road in front of her, its door left open, and she stops to help. There is no driver to be seen, so Vera assumes that the owner has gone to find help. But a cry calls her back: a toddler is strapped in the back seat.

Historia
With ravishing beauty and unsettling intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an Italian villa at the end of World War II. Hana, the exhausted nurse; the maimed thief, Caravaggio; the wary sapper, Kip: each is haunted by the riddle of the English patient, the nameless, burned man who lies in an upstairs room and whose memories of passion, betrayal, and rescue illuminate this book like flashes of heat lightning.

Gorgeous and heartbreaking
Revisado: 03-29-17
The writing is gorgeous, that goes without saying. Every turn of phrase was a visual feast for the eyes --and ears in this case. In more than one spot I stopped, went back, and listened again, and again, just because it was so beautifully written.
I came to the story first from the movie. The movie was done so well in every way, as evidenced by how many awards it was given, but it didn't quite seem enough for me to fully understand the relationships between these people. And, it was so well cast that the visual images of each of the characters carried over into the book.
As I suspected, as good as the movie was, this book dove into the heart and soul of each character. Even if they did something that was surprising, I understood it for the simple human frailty that the each revealed. Every frailty was also what was celebrated in each in gentle and elegant ways.
There were certain minor things that confused me about the movie, or that didn't quite ring true and that was because there was only a short time to offer a glimpse of each character without benefit of full history. That was why I wanted to read the book. It was so beautiful and so compelling that I needed to understand more fully what motivated these characters, until they ceased being characters and started being people.
I believe this is one of those rare books that could be picked up again and again, and every time something else will be revealed and I will have a deeper understanding.

Loved it
Revisado: 03-13-17
It wasn't so predictable as I initially thought it might be. After all, the premise seemed preposterous. However I had no problem getting into this story and it didn't take long before I was hooked. The characters were very well-developed, and the plot was thick with nuance.
There was only one tiny glitch for me, the only downside for me was that some of the characters behaved in a manner that surprised me. What that means is that they didn't do things I thought maybe they should have and they did things I thought they would not do. But in the end and in the aggregate, that just made them unpredictable and made the story a little less transparent. Every time I thought I knew where it was going there was a new direction presented and I like that.
It's OK to disagree with what a character does or says and it's OK if their personalities take a turn so they behave in a way that made it seem a little illogical.
But that in itself is one of the reasons why I like Tana French. The prose is gorgeous, that's a given. The narratives are dense with visual beauty, a treat for my ears. So what would be left after that would be plot and character development. So even if a character behaves in a way that I would not expect or agree with – meaning – leaving things out or never really tying up all loose ends, I believe that the brilliance in the series is that it must be completely on purpose.
I can't wait to get to the next one.

Beautifully written and recorded.
There are no disappointments at all.
Clear prose that held stunning visuals and parallels to any relationship in our own lives now; the struggles and joys, echo through time.
Truly a story for anyone who understands that the balance between the victorious and the vanquished are sometimes blurred by circumstance.

Love This Story!
Revisado: 03-23-15
Would you listen to Cloud Atlas again? Why?
Yes I would listen to Cloud Atlas again. It was complex enough that I'm certain that there is more I would get from a second read that maybe I missed on the first listen. This book is worth having a hard copy also. It's that good.
What other book might you compare Cloud Atlas to and why?
This is a unique story and a unique format which I don't recall ever seeing before. I'm very happy also to have seen the movie for the visuals and music. It really rounded out the experience, and for me, it's like a cult classic. I can't believe this story didn't topple everything in its path.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrators brought the story to life. When I'm reading a hard copy, obviously there's no variation of voice, inflection or modulation, language or tone. The narrators enhanced this story with pitch perfect timing and that allowed me to close my eyes and 'see' the story through them.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Well, the question is, if I were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be, but, it's already a movie. That said, I believe that a good tag line might have been, "When you think it's over, it's really just the beginning...."
Any additional comments?
In my top 5 books and movies. Give it as a gift in all its forms and revisit it once a year. That really keeps things in perspective!
