Historia
Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place: a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.

Excellent story, well written and paced, and keeps you interested from start to finish. Plot is different than what is shown on Netflix’s Dark Winds, which is great since both are very entertaining.

Unnecessarily…LONG
Revisado: 02-26-25
Plot could have been interesting but the author’s effort to be clever and complicated steered story into an unbelievable and dragged-out soap opera type tale. It lost steam 1/4 through book. It was an imaginative plot but the literature, the words composed to tell the story, lacked skill.
But hey! I’m not an author nor have the talent to be one. I’m only offering an opinion as a reader/listener. Can’t understand why this audible got such high ratings. It’s like a “bubblegum” book.

Unbelievably Entertaining!
Revisado: 02-20-25
I'm so happy I stumbled across J. Todd Scott! I listen to both audibles in the series and I just wished there was a third one. But no worries! Scott has other books.
Colorful characters-- well-developed, excellent writing-- very creative, and the plot urged me to the finish line. Story was told through these different characters. Imagine being inside the head of a sociopath with a badge, right when he gets high...it was comical at times yet made sense as to the "why" behind their actions. Bad guys, good guys, some in between, and you get to know them all without the story being too wordy and losing the listener.
I don't know if I would have enjoyed this book as much, had I read it instead of listening because T. Ryder Smith was perfect at narrating this story; his voice gave life to these characters and the events that took place. One of the best audibles I've listened to in some time.

Excellent Writing Creative Story
Revisado: 08-28-24
From the first book of the series I’ve been hooked. I’m actually surprised this audible series didn’t receive a higher volume of ratings…to indicate higher number of listeners.
It’s slow-paced sometimes but quality of content doesn’t suffer. These are good mysteries, detective dramas with mostly unpredictable outcomes. After I got accustomed to the Icelandic names so I could remember who did what…I thoroughly enjoyed listening.
The stories are intelligent, unique, with subplots as interesting as the main plots.
The series has a set of characters, who are interchanged as main characters throughout. Keeps it interesting but early on I would be set on the main character only for it to change next book. But it didn’t take long for me to get taken by him/her.
Indridason gives us in-depth background of these characters, snapshots of their strengths and flaws, without straying too far from plot, and without being too wordy or repetitive, so one can understand their behavior. You ultimately end up liking these complicated people. Sometimes you’re even driven to feel compassionate for some of the criminals!
It’s set in Iceland and Indridason does a fantastic job in helping the listener imagine the scenery.
The narrator? Fantastic as always…He’s one of my favorites and the reason I stumbled across this wonderful author.
I’m not a writer and this is why my review doesn’t flow; why I’m repetitive and too wordy. But hopefully it helps someone.

But he has a troubled past. When Clete leaves his car at the local car wash, only to return to find it ransacked by a group of thugs tied to the drug trade from Mexican cartels to Louisiana, it feels personal—his grandniece died of a fentanyl overdose, and his fists curl when he thinks of the dealers who sold it.

Too Much Time in Clete’s Head
Revisado: 06-23-24
Of course, it’s to one’s preference but this audible spent too much time in Clete’s head. I was very disappointed with this audible.
I’ve listened to the entire Dave Robichaux series and enjoyed every one immensely except for this one.
Yes, James Lee Burke injects a lot of philosophical moments in his books and usually historical background is well researched but as someone born and raised in New Orleans, and traveled to many parts of my state, I had a few issues with his historical facts for this book. And maybe a little offense to his opinions which are spelled out over and over. Never mind that somethings are better left unsaid and that some credit should be given reader/listener that point will be understood . I know it’s a fictional book but because of other books in series, I consider series to be historical fiction.
To add, I found this book to have a much stronger political undertone than his others…and both philosophical and political “speeches” were repetitive.
All of this, made it harder for story to hold my attention. Half way through even increased speed in settings. The plot got lost and the ending was even more of a disappointment.
One book doesn’t change my opinion; Burke is magical with written words.

Waited Till The End
Revisado: 06-18-24
I listened to the Benny Griessel Series back to back and enjoyed each book immensely. Author Deon Meyer wrote creative plots with intertwining subplots, with realistic settings. His writing also endeared you to the main flawed but heroic characters; it is what pushed me from one book to the next. Meyer injects humor within tragic circumstances and ties it all together in the end.
I must admit that I was accustomed to Simon Vance’s voice and excellent narration but it didn’t take me long to realize Raúl Reichlin was a good replacement and his talents shown through in this last book.
My only disappointment was that the series came to an end. Of course, I’m already in book two of Meyer’s other series; the characters in those books are linked to Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido as well as the settings.
Bravo!

Breaking from Series for A Review
Revisado: 05-16-24
I have listened to all books in series up to Book 13 but moving on to the next one. I thought I’d get tired of the series after the first five but no. Each book is written well, characters are consistent throughout, and each story is creative and unique but still connects to each one.
The good guys are flawed, humble, courageous, sometimes funny, but always endearing. And because of their shared traditional values which is lacking in our real world today, you can’t help but pull for them.
Author Craig Johnson is patient with his plots and character development which just makes you feel like part of the Longmire clan.
And Narrator, George Guidall is the best storyteller. He’s perfect for the Walt Longmire series.
As usual the books are so much better than the TV series. In fact, I don’t like the changes they made with the written stories for the sake of the TV series.

Historia
As a Japanese-American fisherman stands trial for murder on an island in Puget Sound, snow blankets the countryside. The whiteness covers the courthouse, but it cannot conceal the memories at work inside: the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, an unrequited love, and the ghosts of racism that still haunt the islanders. First novels rarely attract as much attention as Snow Falling on Cedars. Remaining on best seller lists for months, it has cast a spell on listeners across the country.

What A Lovely Story
Revisado: 04-17-24
Fictional story intertwines with historical events most Americans would rather forget. But that’s not the main subject in the story the writer so eloquently tells here. It’s more about people and how their family, culture, and experiences, influence their actions and beliefs.
The story is about a murder case, the history of those involved, and the people who struggled to do what was right.
The writer took his time telling the story by giving you the background of characters’ pasts. As a result, it all made sense; you understood the actions and behaviors of characters, And by poetically describing the setting the writer let loose your imagination to picture it all.
Narrator did a great job reading a beautifully written book.

An aging judge about to step down. Aggressive prosecutors friendly with the judge. A disgraced president. A nation that had already made up its mind. The Watergate trials were a legal mess-and now, with the discovery of new documents that reveal shocking misconduct by prosecutors and judges alike, former Nixon staffer Geoff Shepard has a convincing case that the wrongdoing of these history-making trials was actually a bigger scandal than the Watergate scandal itself.

Truth is Hard to Sell
Revisado: 02-08-24
Read some reviews saying they couldn’t get passed chapter 1 or 2. Good grief, people’s attention span has certainly declined (Instagramers?) I’m no legal mind here but still was able to comprehended how laws were broken by these federal judges and prosecutors.
Doesn’t matter whether you liked Nixon or not; whether you think he did wrong or not (compared to what some politicians get away today, Nixon’s so-called crime is more like spilled milk)…one thing all Americans should be able to rely on is a solid federal court system that follows the laws. Unfortunately they failed us then and since. And we see those repercussions today. Federal courts blatantly overreaching, interfering, and exuding biases.
Book is not long and doesn’t repeat the details of the events that most adults my age know about.
It was enjoyable and to the point.

Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch.

A Lull in Excitement
Revisado: 01-25-24
This one was a little different. Yes I know Bosch is getting older; I know he has many flaws, it’s what makes him a realistic and endearing character but I don’t know if it’s because of the style the book was read or the direction Connelly (author) wants to take Bosch’s character nonetheless I found Bosch a bit weak, less confident, not as sharp, and a bit of a pushover. I still like him but just hoping this was a vulnerable time in this character’s life. He usually doesn’t express himself verbally in the pass but reader usually knew what was in his heart so mushy words weren’t necessary. I always thought Titus Welliver was an excellent narrator but it just seemed that he narrated this one with less enthusiasm. I’ve read all in series up to this one so know the characters pretty good and I don’t know but just doesn’t seem like the Bosch I’ve been listening to.
Christine Lakin, the other narrator, her reading didn’t match emotions of the characters she read about.
It was a good story, had no issues following/finishing but wasn’t as satisfying as the other audibles I’m accustomed to in this series. Also I like that the book had more than one case to track, both were interesting.
