Historia
Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

What a Delicious Surprise of a Book
Revisado: 03-09-25
Mind candy? Sure. What made this book so much more than just another mildly diverting modern gothic, however, was the unexpected, unconventional and surprisingly satisfying ending. Delightful! (To the extent that horror, both supernatural AND familial, can be.)

The story had a little potential. Unfortunately, it was lost in adolescent dialogue plagued by bad cliches and amateur narration

Amber Patterson is fed up. She's tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more - a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne - a socialite and philanthropist - and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale. Amber's envy could eat her alive...if she didn't have a plan.

Ugh. What was I thinking, to buy this book? The comparison to Patricia Highsmith’s genius Tom Ripley series is so superficial as to be completely unwarranted. This was a wasted credit.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Great Story!
Revisado: 07-24-24
Really enjoyed the twists in the story, and the fact that I didn’t see the ending coming until the very end (only a couple of minutes before it was revealed.
The only down side was the fact that both narrators did not know how to place the emphasis on certain terms (e.g., it’s a GREAT room, not a great ROOM). That part got pretty annoying after a while. Is there no editing in these recordings? Or are the editors as clueless as the performers? Come on Audible, you can do better.

Unfortunate Narrator
Revisado: 05-30-24
The story was coherent and even mildly interesting. Sadly, the narrator, though possessed of a lovely voice, is a mediocre reader and an even worse writer. Did no one direct this reading? This woman has only ONE. SINGLE. CYCLE of verbal expression, and used it throughout the entire book. Her narration completely negated what should have been a ponderous, menacing and sinister atmosphere, and turned it into the recitation of a book report by a fourth-grader.
Read the book yourself; the author’s story doesn’t deserve this inept narrator.

Phenomenal Storytelling
Revisado: 05-03-24
I honestly don’t know what I love more: Natalie Haynes’ writing or her absolutely pitch-perfect narration. Oh, and don’t even get me started on her wonderful, fresh takes on the Greek myths on which I cut my reading teeth… utterly enthralling!

Historia
In Metsan Valo, her family home on Lake Superior, Anni Halla’s beloved grandmother has died. Among her fond memories, what Anni remembers most vividly is her grandmother’s eerie yet enchanting storytelling. By firelight she spun tall tales of spirits in the nearby forest and waters who could heal - or harm - on a whim. But of course those were only stories.

The grass isn't greener on the other side: Heiresses have always been viewed with eyes of envy. They were the ones for whom the cornucopia had been upended, showering them with unimaginable wealth and opportunity. However, through intimate historical biographies, Women of Means shows us that oftentimes the weaving sisters saved their most heart-wrenching tapestries for the destinies of wealthy women. Women of Means is bound to be a non-fiction best seller, full of the best biographies of all time.

Author/Narrator a Match Made in Hell
Revisado: 12-10-23
There was such potential in the topic! Unfortunately, the author is apparently writing for pre-teens, and the narrator can’t actually read. Now I know why access to the book was free.
