Relatable characters. S...l...o...w...b...u...r...n...!
Revisado: 03-12-25
I exercised an enormous amount of patience to get through this story.
Granted, there are a variety of plot twists and reveals that are somewhat satisfying, but the fact that you have to wait sooooo long in between for things to happen makes this mystery, thriller, (genre) story hard to get through.
the background was set up fairly quickly. the 'big bang' happened in the beginning of the story, but the pacing afterwards made me lose interest.
there's a lot of payoffs evenly paced out that come together towards the end, but if you don't have the patience to make it that far you might be confused for a while or just bored.
I think I understand why the character Charlotte was written this way, but the more she was mentioned, the less I liked her, even more than the bad guys.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

best biography I never knew I needed to hear
Revisado: 12-23-24
I'm pretty much a hardcore science fiction and thriller book reader and listener. but I've liked Matthew McConaughey's swag for a while, so I thought listening to his memoir would be interesting.
I'm a 46-year-old mother of two. even though we grew up in slightly different generations, different cultural backgrounds, and follow different career paths, I found this book to be extremely insightful and helpful to someone who's pretty much already lived half of my adult life.
I wish I had read a book like this in my twenties. I think it would have helped me to be more courageous and more of myself authentically.
this memoir opens my mind to want to read more biographies especially from regular down the Earth folks like Matthew.
this is one of the few books that I could see myself listening to again and again. sometimes just for the comfort of that wise friend who always gives you good advice, and other times with a pen and paper and hand to take notes.
this book was very therapeutic, and funny

Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job. Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.

I feel weird saying this, but the narrator had a sexy voice
Revisado: 08-10-24
I'm a heterosexual woman, but something about the way the story was read wa sly, sultry, and seductive. The voice artist did an excellent job of melting into different characters and dialects. The plot was almost over my head (I'll have to go back for a second listen for some things to make sense) but the narration kept me engaged.

Historia
In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career.

Excessive apologies distracting
Revisado: 04-19-23
I'm still somewhat in the beginning of the story. I believe chapter 2, and I have a few observations that influenced the enjoyability of the story for me. one: there is excessive apologizing.
don't know if it was influenced by the editors or our current PC culture, but there were many places where there were apologies that I didn't even realize something offensive had taken place and I am a Generation X woman. apology upon apology to the point where it is more of a distraction than attempts of atonement.
my second observation is that perhaps the written version makes a different experience for the annotations. having the choice to gloss over or completely ignore the footnotes and just to read the story probably would have help the pacing of flow better.
otherwise, if I sift through the chronic moments of peacemaking and apologetic commentary,
I can appreciate the insight to Mr Wheaton's world of child acting and coming of age story in the Hollywood industry.
as a christian, I'm offended more by the constant swearing in the book than at the other moments of misogyny, bigotry, homophobia, ableism talk, and whatnot(most of which flew past me until they were pointedout).
Another commenter said *say it once, and be done with it." lots of apologizing for things that you said as a younger more immature you. but still dropping the F-bomb like it's World War III. luckily, I'm not extremely prudent and am able to mentally disregard the strong language in order to take in the message.
when is all said and done I am happy with my purchase with wil Wheaton's annotated memoir. I grew up having a crush on him and was curious to find out more about him. in this day of age of cancel culture, you're probably damned if you doing damned if you don't so I'm pretty sure he did what he had to do. good share. I respect him for being vulnerable and open with his fans and public in general.
you are enough and you are appreciated .

intriguing story, with just a few rushed parts
Revisado: 12-14-22
I am really enjoying my growing collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy Tales from the African continent. I believe this is my second or third book from this author. great plot and twists. kept my interest from beginning to end. somewhere towards the middle and end there were a few rushed parts where I thought I missed something because either the conversation changed quickly without very much transition or something new happened abruptly without explanation. I found myself rewinding the story a few times just to make sure I hadn't missed something. other than those two or three rushed plot transitions toward the end, it was a very enjoyable read/listen. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series

Historia
Pepper is a rambunctious big man, and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He's not mentally ill, but that doesn't seem to matter. On his first night, he's visited by a terrifying creature who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It's no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl.
