Too long, too staccato
Revisado: 08-04-23
This shouldn't have been 65 chapters long, but action scenes and dialogues kept getting interrupted by constant, paragraphs-long introspections to the point that it made the story feel like it was just rambling. Add the mostly staccato pacing of the narrator and the first 29 chapters being dedicated to one long battle sequence and I found large chunks of the book boring enough to zone out. Lastly, Talker was the only character I remotely liked because I couldn't keep track of most of the others, who were described as grim, thrill junkies and little else.
I give it a 3 overall because the story did pick up some in the second half, after they finally got done with the first battle, and this was definitely where the Tolkien/DnD influence started to be seen in earnest, but it still had a lot of the problems listed above.

So far so good
Revisado: 12-04-22
These three books are my introduction to both the author and the world of Stiger and his legion. So far I'm liking what I'm hearing and the different races involved in the story make me want to play an RTS-style video game based off it. I hope I won't have to wait long for the next two books in this prequel and I intend to start Stiger's Tigers soon.

Historia
One of history's greatest mysteries, the Ninth Imperial Legion guarding Rome's northernmost frontier in Britannia disappeared around the year 122 AD. Badly outnumbered, facing certain destruction, and cut off from supply, the Imperial Roman Ninth Legion Hispana is surrounded by the hostile Celtic army. Then the unthinkable happens. Senior Centurion Karus and the Ninth are transported to a strange place, far away from the Britannia they knew. The legion's deliverance from danger at first appears to be a blessing from the gods, but....

It's light on the action, but does a lot to set up what's to come. Looking forward to the next book and the extended universe after that.

But her life is shattered when a Mage prophesizes that her bloodline will one day overthrow the Great Guilds.

Just as good as the first series
Revisado: 08-14-22
I love this series and the world in which it's set; the characters are down to earth and feel real. It's a pleasure watching them mature and explore the world and its mysteries while defying the odds and standing up to injustide and arrogance. My only complaint is that I was hoping for a sequel to Daughter of Dragons instead of a prequel to Pillars of Reality; I’m already invested in those characters and want to know what's going to happen to their next generation.

While President Roosevelt defends the US, the British Empire rallies to repel their alien foe again, and a young Winston Churchill helps to rally international forces. Not all the world sees the Martians as a threat, though; some see them as leverage against Britain. As the military tries to come up with solutions, the international arena takes the stage.

When do we get more?!
Revisado: 08-09-22
Some of the Australian accents were nearly impossible to understand, which was my only problem with the performance, and one character, Lindemann, was just a glorified observer to Churchill, my only issue with the story, but overall it was a great story and a fine addition/conclusion to The Great Martian War. I just wish there was more on the horizon.

Historia
The Martian invaders have overrun the American heartland. Between the Mississippi and the Rockies, only Texas holds out, written off by the high command in Washington, and with revolution brewing in Mexico. Texas has become the Martians' new target. Across the Lone Star State, soldiers, Rangers, and civilians alike prepare to repel the next attack, outmatched and outgunned - yet undaunted. Governor Colquitt and General Funston plan to build their own weapons, raise their own armies, and perhaps take the war into their own hands.

Great Story
Revisado: 08-01-22
Just one question: when are the rest of the books going to be written? I read the original trilogy between 3 and 5 years ago and have been holding off ever since, partly waiting for this and the European spin-offs to conclude; there's been no sign that they will.

Now this is an alternate history
Revisado: 04-25-22
My problem with the first book is that it was close enough to actual events to feel less like an alternate history and more like a secret history. Here, you cannot make such an argument; a British prince becomes America's first national leader, French, British, and Native peoples come together in common cause, and the groundwork for a potentially greater nation is laid. If this were the first book in the series and each subsequent book used it as a foundation or was a direct sequel, I would’ve been all over it like I was for many of the Ring of Fire novels. Although I do need to wonder why there wasn't any field artillery at the final battle.

Not a bad gothicpunk
Revisado: 04-13-22
There's a lot of talking between action scenes, which are brief but very well executed; beyond that it's not a bad story, if you don't mind characters who aren't the most likeable--after all, they're monsters.

How does a one-hit-point goblin become the Dark Lord? By accident. Bert is a tiny goblin with big dreams. He follows adventurers, and loots the copper they leave behind when they take the real loot. One day, Bert hopes, he'll have enough copper to buy a warg, and finally promote from a one-HP critter to a Warg Rider. Kit is a typical gamer hoping to enjoy a good story, but her friends are more interested in rules, loot and experience.

A fun story from a master of sci-fan
Revisado: 01-27-22
Despite being absolutely ridiculous and nothing like Magitech Chronicles or Deathless, this was fun and entertaining in pretty much every way; you can't help but feel endeared to Bert on one or more levels. It's also nice to see the story that's occasionally referenced in Fox's bigger works.

Historia
Necrotis' endgame is upon us. The sector is starving. Frit is dead. The Krox have left the Confederacy, and the rest of it is falling apart. Time is fast running out to stop Necrotis, who will win through simple attrition if we do nothing. The time has come to ride to war. Xal'Aran is training me to be the deadliest captain to ever command the Word of Xal and will be flying alongside me to hunt down Necrotis. Nor do we ride alone. Voria and her Spellship will guide us into the storm to hunt our enemy once and for all.

if not for the announcement of book 7...
Revisado: 01-06-22
I'd be a bit more disappointed. As it stands, the only complaint I have is the fact that for two or three books they made a huge deal about making Jarek an eradicator, only to not actually have him eradicate Necrotis; the big fight still came down to Eran vs Necrotis in a similar fashion to Eran vs Nefarious. If another book is coming, hopefully it'll tie up the loose ends of this one while giving Jarek more time to shine without being overshadowed by gods.
