Historia
At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

This was a wonderful story, I loved it.
Revisado: 11-11-21
I can’t tell you which part of the book was my favorite. And the weaving together of the stories, like all our stories, was so well done. I’m sad it’s over and look forward to reading it again one day.

Historia
Contemptuous of their parents, who pass their days in a stupor of liquor, drugs, and sex, the children feel neglected and suffocated at the same time. When a destructive storm descends on the summer estate, the group's ringleaders - including Eve, who narrates the story - decide to run away, leading the younger ones on a dangerous foray into the apocalyptic chaos outside.

Love listening to a bored teen? This is for you!
Revisado: 03-08-21
There are a few insightful and creative moments. Like the bit about the holy ghost and art. And some of the thoughts about global warming and how we're just not mentally prepared. But the voice the story is told in sounds like a stoned and/or bored teenager. Like everything is stupid to her.
I didn’t read the description before I purchased it. It was hard to follow what sounded at first like a coming-of-age teenage adventure into an episode of the walking dead (still with the stoned teenager narration). Even when someone dies, her tone of voice is "yeah, whatever". The constant message that everyone is useless, got old pretty fast.

Historia
Featuring original music by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon! It's 2003 and Romy Hall is at the start of two consecutive life sentences at Stanville Women's Correctional Facility, deep in California's Central Valley. Outside is the world from which she has been severed: the San Francisco of her youth and her young son, Jackson. Inside is a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the absurdities of institutional living, which Kushner evokes with great humor and precision.

Her characters are great. I will be wondering what happens to them.
Revisado: 02-09-21
Rachel Kushner does a great job of bringing all these people to life in a way that illuminates the complexities in them. The way life can take you places you didn’t intend to be. Lots to think about here, and well written. I was totally drawn in.

Fun listen, maybe a little too much coincidence
Revisado: 12-01-20
Hearing the details of these characters' lives was interesting and made this a good listen. The different ways women can fall victim to violent or crappy men - and the work they do to get out. The amount of coincidence in this story requires a little suspension of disbelief, be forewarned.

Lizzie Benson slid into her job as a librarian without a traditional degree. But this gives her a vantage point from which to practice her other calling: she is a fake shrink. For years, she has tended to her God-haunted mother and her recovering addict brother. They have both stabilized for the moment, but Lizzie has little chance to spend her new free time with husband and son before her old mentor, Sylvia Liller, makes a proposal. Interesting book. Audible if you’re reading this, get more narrators.
Revisado: 11-11-20
I enjoyed the book but I have a really hard time with Cassandra Campbell’s narration. And Audible uses her SO MUCH. I’m sure she’s a lovely person but surely there can be more variety! It’s the bright clipped voice that seems inappropriate for some of these heavier books.

Hollywood Park is a remarkable memoir of a tumultuous life. Mikel Jollett was born into one of the country’s most infamous cults and subjected to a childhood filled with poverty, addiction, and emotional abuse. Yet, ultimately, his is a story of fierce love and family loyalty told in a raw, poetic voice that signals the emergence of a uniquely gifted writer.

Very heart touching to hear his experience working though a crappy childhood. His ability to be honest about things that we’d all rather not talk about was impressive. Thank you Mikel for sharing your story. In little ways it helps the rest of us as we struggle along our own paths.

A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.

Interesting and personal take on the current state of things here in the US. And told in a way that kept me listening. It’s so interesting to hear about the American experience from people who aren’t white men. I think he’s brave to share some of this and glad he did.

Historia
Told in three distinct and uniquely compelling sections, Asymmetry explores the imbalances that spark and sustain many of our most dramatic human relations: inequities in age, power, talent, wealth, fame, geography, and justice. The first section, "Folly", tells the story of Alice, a young American editor, and her relationship with the famous and much older writer Ezra Blazer. A tender and exquisite account of an unexpected romance that takes place in New York during the early years of the Iraq War.

Revisado: 01-04-19
I love the way this author weaves her deeper thoughts into the everyday stories of her characters. The first story took me a while to get into. I was frustrated that Mary Alice didn’t seem to have a voice. I’m happy I kept going. Very meaningful and thoughtful work. Thank you Lisa Halliday!

Great book on slowing down, with a fast narration
Revisado: 10-04-16
Great book with a lot of wonderful points and insight. I really enjoyed it! She has a lot of relatable stories, especially for those mid-life struggles that seem to pop up for many of us. It's refreshing to hear someone encouraging us to slow down and be present. Which leads me to this...
It sounds like they edited Shauna's sentences together without leaving the space in between. I'm not sure what it is, but it's incredibly rushed. Like one really long run-on sentence. There's a lot of great information to think about while listening to this book, I wish the pace of the narration was a touch slower.
