Great Writing, Admirably Told
Revisado: 01-08-25
Soooooooo good!!! A great listen. Le Carré at his best: beautifully drawn characters, well-crafted story. Ando does an admirable job at capturing all the nationalities and traits and performances of the large cast of characters. A bit of patience and you get used to some of the clumsiness. The heart comes through. A very good Audible experience.

Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

A Powerful and Worthy Listen
Revisado: 12-18-24
An emotionally packed novel, beautifully written, each character given depth and detail of their humanity. Read with restraint and care. Beautiful performance. Forgive some of the mangled French pronunciations. There is so much to recommend this audiobook.

Historia
Chéri and its sequel, The End of Chéri, mark Colette’s finest achievements, in their brilliant, subtle, and frank investigations of love and power. Set in the Parisian demimonde in the last days of the Belle Époque, Chéri tells the story of Léa, a courtesan at the end of a successful career, and her lover, the beautiful but emotionally opaque Chéri. Chéri will soon enter into an arranged marriage, ending their six-year affair, which—they will each realize too late—has been the one real love of their lives.

Reese almost had it all: a loving relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York City, a job she didn't hate. She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Now Reese is caught in a self-destructive pattern: avoiding her loneliness by sleeping with married men.

Revisado: 06-01-23
Mild curiosity inspired me to listen: but that was woefully unfair to this wonderful book. This was the real deal! Beautifully rendered characters in difficult human circumstances. I binged through this. Performance was understated, but very effective. Don't think twice, listen to this! Great audible experience.

Revisado: 05-23-23
Patchett is a master story weaver in Bel Canto. It was gripping and soft at the same time. I will long remember these characters. Fields does a very good job at defining the characters with accents and rhythms. Brava to both! A very worthwhile listen. I highly recommend.

Surprisingly moving
Revisado: 05-13-23
What a nice surprise this audio book was. Story a bit clunky.... but it grew on me. Performances were thoughtful and well integrated with one another so you never felt you were in separate stories. All together this audiobook captured the experience of living through a complicated time, and then - for those lucky enough to have lived through it - the experience of moving on with life. I recommend Christodora.

Historia
One year after the death of his beloved musician father, thirteen-year-old Benny Oh begins to hear voices. The voices belong to the things in his house—a sneaker, a broken Christmas ornament, a piece of wilted lettuce. Although Benny doesn't understand what these things are saying, he can sense their emotional tone; some are pleasant, a gentle hum or coo, but others are snide, angry and full of pain. When his mother, Annabelle, develops a hoarding problem, the voices grow more clamorous.

Lovely story, direction meh
Revisado: 02-25-23
This was a lovely story and well worth acquiring. Unfortunately, the reader seems to have been directed to lean into the different voices..... which he can do well. However,
Characterizations
were a bit heavy. This was fine for minor characters, but alienating for the principals. Regardless, its a good listen. Gentle and mind-opening.

Historia
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

Quietly subtly engaging
Revisado: 01-30-23
First, big applause for Angus King who lovingly creates all the characters and their many specific accents and tones. Douglas Stuart's writing and characters are lovely. Such a sweet sad portrait of the complicated bond of a mother and child facing the most difficult experiences of life. I don't think I would have gotten as much out of it had I read it myself. Very worthwhile listen.

Chopin's heart is carried back to Warsaw in secret by his adoring sister. A woman must return to her native Poland in order to poison her terminally ill high school sweetheart, and a young man slowly descends into madness when his wife and child mysteriously vanish during a vacation and just as suddenly reappear. Through these brilliantly imagined characters and stories, interwoven with haunting, playful, and revelatory meditations, Flights explores what it means to be a traveler, a wanderer, a body in motion not only through space but through time.
