Historia
Clayton Burroughs comes from a long line of outlaws. For generations the Burroughs clan has made their home on Bull Mountain in North Georgia, running shine, pot, and meth over six state lines, virtually untouched by the rule of law. To distance himself from his family's criminal empire, Clayton takes the job of sheriff in a neighboring community to keep what peace he can.

Disappointing? Yes. Egregiously awful? Also yes.
Revisado: 02-18-24
Good grief, where to begin. I saw so many memes of things written with, “the male gaze” and laughed at them, but then I read this and was like….. ohhhhhhh. They REALLY aren’t all exaggerations. The amount of times he’s just describing some men doing horrific things and then, for absolutely no reason, has to reference a woman being mad turned on by it… good grief. Also any time he starts talking about a minority he does so in the most stereotypical way ever while usually trying to make it seem as if it’s progressive and anti-racist. I found myself predicting the lines that minorities were about to say based ENTIRELY on stereotypes. I had thought this would be a good book but was just finishing it out of spite at the end. Like it really takes a lot for me to not be positive, writing a book is such an undertaking and so personal… but how someone wrote this, and then an editor was like yeah, sick, this is good! I just cannot imagine.

Mix tapes: We all have our favorites. Stick one into a deck, press play, and you’re instantly transported to another time in your life. For Rob Sheffield, that time was one of miraculous love and unbearable grief. A time that spanned seven years, it started when he met the girl of his dreams, and ended when he watched her die in his arms.

Good Grief.
Revisado: 02-06-24
This was so witty and charming and self-deprecating and lyrical and memorable and oh my God so painful. So beautiful and so tough. I loved it and it scared me and I just might have to sit here and think about it for a while.

Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Probably needs a disclaimer
Revisado: 01-25-24
Staunching the KKK’s rise is, obviously, fantastic. However, the title makes it sound like there’s going to be a little more positive of an end. There is not a lot of positivity going on in this story. Great history, but just a reminder that everything sucks.

Historia
From the glamorous to the entitled, from royalty to the financially ruined, everyone who wanted to be seen—or just to gawk—at the hottest restaurants in New York City came to places Michael Cecchi-Azzolina helped run. His phone number was passed around among those who wanted to curry favor, during the decades when restaurants replaced clubs and theater as, well, theater in the most visible, vibrant city in the world. Besides dropping us back into a vanished time, Your Table Is Ready takes us places we’d never be able to get into on our own.

Emotional & engaging

I loved everything about this book. While the truths it told were sometimes dark & difficult, it shed light and levity on an industry that touches everyone.

Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

This could’ve been written last week, for all the accuracy it still holds. A masterpiece.
