Not for me
Revisado: 11-08-24
I’m sure some people will really love this book. For me, though, I found it to be a narrative reflection on the implications of AI, and the human caused deterioration of the world’s oceans and precious sea life. It’s not to say that these aren’t incredibly important topics, but I don’t think this story specifically achieved the goal of translating these topics to readers in a way that will make a difference.
Several times, I found myself very confused by the actions of one of the characters and really questioning what the purpose of those actions was in the context of the bigger narrative. This could be due to my positionality (ethnically and economically) or it could just be a weirdly written character. Frankly, I tried to listen to this as quickly as possible so that it could be done and I could move onto something more to my liking.

Could have been so much better
Revisado: 09-21-24
One of the characters being the antichrist wasn’t something I wanted to hear about. But aside from that, was the narrator. The guy tried but the book would have been 1000% better with a more experienced narrator.

A Longer, More Complex, Less Spiritual Cousin to “the Alchemist”
Revisado: 04-12-24
Great book, great story, grades characters. Not what you think you’re going to read when you start reading it. The impressions that stayed with me for this book echoed the boxcar children mixed with a longer, more complex, less spiritual cousin to the Alchemist. Read it and you’ll see what I mean.

Great series for those who love fantasy but don’t want to have a literal existential crisis after reading. Enjoyable, funny and lite enough not to depress or scare.

Good book, interesting characters, story well told. The genre is a little violent for me, but wasn’t written gratuitously in that respect.

Historia
Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It's called The Dellawisp and it's named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy. When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Fine, but not garden spells
Revisado: 11-14-23
When I purchased this book, I was hoping to be swept away again by Allen’s style as shown in her book Garden Spells, but this one left me with a meh feeling. Also, one of the ghost characters was so annoying, that I almost turned it off. I don’t know if this was because of the performance or because of the writing. If you haven’t read Garden Spells, go buy that one instead.

Historia
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers.
Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
Together again in the house they grew up in, the Waverley sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy - if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom - or with each other.

Disturbing and Depressing
Revisado: 06-24-17
Definitely existentially stimulating, but considering the current state of our country, I found I completely disturbing and frankly depressing. Might want to avoid if you don't want to hear about the repression and regression of women and their rights.
