Historia
Lila Kennedy has a lot on her plate. A broken marriage, two wayward daughters, a house that is falling apart, and an elderly stepfather who seems to have quietly moved in. Her career is in freefall and her love life is . . . complicated. So when her real dad—a man she has barely seen since he ran off to Hollywood thirty-five years ago—suddenly appears on her doorstep, it feels like the final straw. But it turns out even the family you thought you could never forgive might have something to teach you: about love, and what it actually means to be family.

So disappointing
Revisado: 02-20-25
I had to stop listening to this book. I find the protagonist so annoying and ungrateful to her step-father who provides free cooking, cleaning, gardening, and repairs.. The narrator is also driving me nuts. “Says” should be pronounced “sez.” She makes “says” rhyme with “ways.” I just can’t. I’m out.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Another amazing Quinn novel!
Revisado: 10-08-24
This is the fourth Kate Quinn novel I have read and they’ve all been outstanding. This and The Rose Code are my very favorites. The narrator does a great job with the wide array of accents.

Historia
From one of Britain's most celebrated writers of color, Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of black British women. Winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize, Girl, Woman, Other paints a vivid portrait of the state of post-Brexit Britain, as well as looking back to the legacy of Britain's colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean.

Historia
It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, nine, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer?

Historia
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

This narrator was awful
Revisado: 12-27-21
Usually there are great narrators for Colgan's books, but Eilidh Beaton's rendition of Carmen's voice was truly grating. She made that character thoroughly unlikeable. Oke's "Brazilian" accent was just weird. Additionally, this is not Colgan's best book. Maybe she was rushed in writing it. It feels half-baked.

Good series, iffy narrator
Revisado: 07-09-21
This is a good serious if you need some thing with a happy ending. The narration was pretty good except for the voice of Huckle. This narrator cannot and should not do American accents. Thankfully, Huckle was only a minor character in this one.

Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

tragic story of loss, beautifully told
Revisado: 02-08-21
This is an incredibly sad novel about the loss of a son and brother and the grief that follows. It would be quite heavy at any time, but it feels especially heavy now, during this global pandemic. At the same time, the novel is beautifully written and the narrator of the audiobook has a voice that is particularly well-suited to the story. I had expected a book about Shakespeare, but the main character is Agnes, Hamnet's mother. Shakespeare is not even named, except as "her husband." Overall, I would describe this book as heart wrenching, unique, and memorable.
