disjointed mess

I could not follow the story . the story jerked back and forth told by a monotone reader - altogether unpleasant for me. I find it ludicrous how such an indigestible mess of a non linear non story book can be touted as literary? Editing gone wrong ? a waste of time and credits for my taste, boring and impossible to understand or enjoy.

Every time I finish a book by Juliet Marilier I sm so very sad - that it’s over. I love to be immersed in that world with those wildly resourceful, brave and good, honorable people and how they stick to their principles of honesty , compassion and selfless service. I love that world - with its colorful denizens, human and uncanny . Now I am all caught up in this series , as in all the others that came before it and especially sad that i sn already waiting for Marilier‘s next series. What could it be. I have not found anybody who writes as well as her - in this genre. It is the ultimate escape fiction for me! i especially love this as audio books; listening to the narration is especially immersive. Aldo find the resilience of the characters, commitment and perseverance themes inspiring .

Rip Off

What is ripped off? you might ask; well, time first of All . I feel teased and the brunt of a joke. Most of these reviews are so charitable- when this seems just like a blatant and gratuitous advertisement . The story is pretty pointless. It is apparently the first chapter of a book that does not exist, the story ends suddenly and leaves you hanging .

A Dance with Fate: Aptly named, highly entertaining Sequel

This audio book does not disappoint, especially if you are familiar with Marillier’s writing. Gaelic mythology blends well with storyline and reveals more of Swan island and its warriors snd bards; Covid distraction ( distraction from the poor state of affairs ) and excellent entertainment. Cannot wait for the next sequel or sequels. Please publish it soon ! cannot get enough of the hero protagonists.
oh yeah: the performers are all 5* !

wow-i liked several of Maggie Stiefvater‘s books already-but this is a mess: i never got a real picture of the water horses. it just never came together for me... it seems like it is really open ended. at the end of the audio book is a lengthy explanation by the author. i guess it’s there because the book is lacking in cohesion and the story is too confusing, but the book should not need doch an explanation.
sadly; the book did not fulfill my positive expectations.

rewarding and engaging entertainment

great detailed characters in a believable scene make this another high quality, entertaining story!
the reader is capable of transporting us listener right into the story. A highly skilled reader makes me forget the reader as separate from the story -this reader has this magical skill.
i hope for more stories from swan island and these characters!

exciting &suspenseful

i cannot really remember the reader; for me that is absolutely the highest compliment, i don’t like readers who are noticeable, i want to focus on the story. i find the story relatively engaging, but subtracted a star , because it’s a little confused at times/ on the other hand i hope things will become clearer in the next installment. The author presents unusual material in the story-i would want to find out how this all started, it’s as if we get thrown in the middle, but the story is suspenseful too besides new and unusual.

Entertaining while doing other things

I have enjoyed other YA audiobooks by this author and he has been very innovative & creative with his ideas before. This book was entertaining, even though not as exciting as some of his previous novels. This has a lot to say to his listeners and gets a little too thinly veiled preachy. Nevertheless big kudos for making his main character a young gay kid.

First weird contact

I like weird !!! But this might be too weird in the unexplained areas. A big idea/question in this story is the difference between sentience and intelligence, also predators, also time, how we deceive ourselves.This just also had a lot of missing transitions in the story line, which made it for me depressingly and prohibitively hard to figure stuff out. I guess that is why some reviewers said that they listened to it twice. Yes, there is tension to find out who survives to the end, or when and how they'll get to really communicate deeply and interestingly with the alien(s)(?) It did well in conveying a sense of futility and lonely mess that really not makes me want to buy another book in this universe for now. There is already too much depressing, bewildering, unexplained ugliness and violence in my world . Since the book did not reward me with many insights( I might be too uneducated in the areas of biology and other areas some people really find brilliant & interesting in this tale, according to their reviews), nor interesting or beautiful descriptions of any kind, I am not very motivated to read more of this author's universe right now . I would like to find out more about what the hinted on future holds; but it is really left open ended. If you're going to get this; I think the odds are 60:40 wether you'd like it (40 % on that you might like it)
