Too much of the same, DNF: Spoilers Warning...

BLUF: I got about halfway through the first book in this follow-on series and just couldn't maintain interest due to the resurgence of way too many of the things that I thought plagued the Star Scavenger Series.
*SPOILERS below*

*
Despite reading and understanding a lot of the common criticisms of the Scavenger Series, I enjoyed the story and overall the character interactions enough to push me through. I kind of appreciated that Hudson stayed more or less true to his principles through the end, that Tori stayed a badass with a soft spot for Hudson, and the bad guys stayed bad until the end...
*SPOILERS: Star Guardians Series picks up 5 years later and unfortunately the author's approach was to hit the reset button on most of the story. Okay, I can somewhat deal with parts of this. Hudson and Tori are together, seemingly struggling as relic hunters still and having no advantages. The RGF is once again corrupt. Apparently everyone is discovering new worlds at a rapid pace again even though the means to do so (the "crystal") was destroyed in the fight with Goliath. This new story kicks off with a 5-year reunion of our main protagonists from the previous books, which rapidly ends in tragedy. Tori and Hudson's awesome alien-enhanced spaceship gets trivially destroyed and our famous heroes are left nearly starting from square one fighting a new enemy...only...maybe not a new enemy.
It was clear from book synopsis that Goliath was going to reappear...okay, fine. But once again, Hudson (and Tori) is forced to start afresh by managing to obtain a broken but diamond in the rough spaceship that is way beyond his means and of course manages to run into the one person in the galaxy who can and will help him basically refab it for almost no cost. Okay, cringe...I kept going.
The last straw for me was the sudden (but at this point not surprising) reappearance of Logan Griff who still wants nothing more than to kill Hudson. That was the end for me. Hundson and Tori are in another no-escape situation surrounded by people who just want them dead, and I fully assume they will escape somehow. I just can't stomach more of Griff magically popping up everywhere Hudson goes.
Because this was an Audible purchase, I will add that I still do not enjoy the narration very much even if I was used to it by this point.

Historia
Hudson Powell had always been a drifter, but after his father died, he vowed to turn his life around. He quit freelancing as a starship pilot and joined the Relic Guardian Force as a 38-year-old rookie. That was a big mistake. The RGF police the alien wrecks that have been found on every portal world discovered in the last century. They make sure the relic hunters pay taxes on the priceless alien tech they scavenge from the hulks. The snag is that the RGF is corrupt. And Hudson’s training officer Logan Griff is the worst scumbag of the lot.

Light and enjoyable even if not the best executed.

I try not to lean too much on book and Audible reviews when trying to decide whether to pursue a story. In this case, after listening to the Star Scavenger Series, I do find a lot of the consistent complaints in the reviews to be legitimate, but I will that say those issue did not really prevent me from enjoying the story. I also want to make to emphasize up front that even though my "Cons" list below seems much longer than "Pros," I did ultimately enjoy this story.
AUDIBLE:
- For a series that I ultimately enjoyed, this five book series was an excellent purchase that I do no regret.
- Performance: I wasn't a big fan overall of the performance. On the plus side, I think the performers did a good job with the dialogue and different voices. On the negative side, I felt like a lot of narration was flat and at times uneven where sentences would end slowly and quietly as if he had no enthusiasm for the material. This was not to a degree that it made me want to stop listening.
STORY PROS:
- The story itself is light, adventurous and in my opinion was easy to enjoy at a casual pace. Chapters were broken up at decent intervals and the flow of the action was at a good pace. Since I tend to listen at 20-30 minute intervals, I enjoyed this aspect.
- Even though the books are littered with common tropes and stereotypes, I liked the characters including the "bad guys." A chief complaint I see in reviews is that the protagonist is "too nice." I can totally understand this - he is definitely not alpha male material - but I was pleased that the author did not make this a story arc about how the nice guy turns into a badass.
- One of my cons below is that despite the scale of the story, the universe is too small. But what we do get to see is compelling and interesting, without being too detail-focused in the narrative.
STORY CONS:
- Most of these complaints deal with plot holes or poorly developed plot elements...
- Probably the largest issue I have is that for a "space opera" that takes place across the stars, the galaxy in this series seems like an exceedingly small place. The same bad guys always seem to turn up in the same place as our protagonist. It seems like San Francisco is the only relevant place on Earth to be. And for a naive space adventurer, the main protagonist seems to have an unbelievable number of old connections.
- Relic Hunting: I like the concept of this, but the idea that these old ship wrecks have been continually plundered for decades yet still can yield easy-to-find rewards with just a couple hours of effort is ridiculous. And again, if these relic ships are SO big, why do all the relic hunters seem to run in to each other inside the ships? Also, in the end, a relatively small portion of books are really devoted to the relic hunting concept given that it's really the entire backdrop of the story.
- Lack of surveillance: In present day it seems like we are all being watched all of the time. Fast forward to a hypothetical future and it's hard to believe this trend would not continue to accelerate. There are a lot of plot points in the story where it's hard to imagine people getting away with the things they do because there is apparently no surveillance. A specific inconsistency: near the beginning of the book it is revealed that RGF cockpits record all audio, which would seem to have to include a mountain of open discussions of illegal dealings - yet the RGF seems to operate in a vacuum and is untouchable.
