I can’t believe the author released this to the public. I even couldn’t finish the first chapter because of the female narrator and her ‘male’ voice. Absolutely distracts from the story and sounds more like she’s mocking the men than reading them. I’ll have to read this book instead - what a disappointment and waste of my money.

📖 STORY: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⭐️- Story line, quality of writing, surprises
⭐️- Chacters were strong-willed and imperfect while having good intentions
⭐️- Spice writing and frequency of scenes*
⭐️- Narration (1/2 star)
⭐️- Overall coalesce (1/2 star)

🥵SPICE*: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 1/2
🌶️- Frequency/ quantity
🌶️- Quality of writing/ details
🌶️- Adventurous/ excitement
🌶️- Narration (1/2 pepper)
❌- Dual POV scenes

📣 FEEDBACK: There was a lot of back and forth between the characters throughout the story but I was hoping for more action with the FMC (attacked, kidnapped, another mafia boss tries to marry her, etc.). The spice scenes were fun but the spice itself wasn’t very adventurous. The pace throughout was slow/ repetitive then the last part after the return to Italy went very quick (almost like the authors were over this story and just wanted to end it). Overall a good story with mafia and crime, a smart and strong FMC, lots of banter, character growth and development, and a HEA.

NARRATORS: absolutely amazing, and simply incredible! Duet narration is the way to go, especially for a story like this. Jacob Morgan and his accents and emotion were captivating, and Muffy Newtown truly captured the spirit of Fallon. Aaron Shedlock brings a certain swagger to every character he plays so having him join the cast was a wonderful touch.

CAST:
Fallon: female mercenary, total badass, haunting backstory
Declan: male mercenary, tall & tattooed, troubled past
March: male mercenary, Fallon’s ‘handler’ and best friend

PROS: I always love a book with a badass FMC which this most certainly had! The author kept true to her backstory throughout the entire book as this lead Fallon to make some of the decisions she made. The story was exciting and kept moving, and it had everything - enemies to lovers, forced proximity, slow burn with insane chemistry, second chance lovers, and lots of suspense. The characters were imperfect which was realistic and great to see, and this kept the story line unfolding as things didn’t go quite as planned. There were a few good surprises that I didn’t see coming which is difficult to do as I can usually guess what’s around the corner.

CONS: I found that after the beginning of the book that Declan’s mercenary skills were utilized and in fact I was disappointed in how helpless he became at times. Yes he was preoccupied with other things during some of those times but he admitted to stepping back and watching his ‘copperhead killer’ take the wheel. He was tall, muscular, and had the necessary skills so I felt like he wasn’t utilized as much as he could have been throughout the book. I love that Fallon was a badass but Declan was supposed to be one as well and I lost that confidence in him early in the story.

OVERALL: I fell in love with these characters but was frustrated with the time gaps in their story (it tore me to pieces and I’m not an emotional reader!). The writing what phenomenal and the narrators were simply incredible. This may be one of my top 10 books ever read and I think I’ve just become M. Never’s newest fan.

This book annoyed me. I stuck with it hoping the female main character would develop but she was just the typical innocent, helpless, overly-emotional, inexperienced young woman you’d expect to find in a romance novel. You’d think a big bad mafia boss would want someone strong-willed and confident by their side but this girl cried through the whole book (often more than once in a single conversation).

I love narrator Aaron Shedlock but I didn’t feel like his voice was right for this role (not rough enough for the main character). And narrator Meghan Kelly may have just been acting based off the terrible character and story line but I couldn’t get past the whining voice she used.

Also, for those with triggers check the reviews (DV, SA, mentions of trafficking, assault, etc.).

Bottom line: I have no idea who is out there rating this book so highly and encouraging sequels but this was not my cup of tea. Maybe the sequels are better but I’m not wasting any more of my time on this one.

Pros: great writing (I enjoy similar books by this author), mafia boss was actually believable, overall a great plot, audiobook readers were great.

Cons: Typical innocent, inexperienced, and helpless FMC - couldn’t connect with her at all, lots of repetition, very slow burn (too slow for me), boring in some areas and almost DNF.

The story has potential and I enjoy books by this author so I moved onto book #2. I’m 5 chapters in and so far so good.

The narrator was not great - very monotone and no acting. The story was just ok for me personally. I feel like it would have a been a lot better with a better narrator and perhaps a male narrator for the other main character.
