Historia
After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since, the land has belonged to man, and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated.

Hopeful start
Revisado: 05-04-25
If you’re reading this to see if this book is work the listen I have to say yes. TGR was fantastic as always and the author did a good job keeping the book moving at a brisk pace while keeping the material interesting. Hopeful for the rest of the series.

Nikolis’ parents are dead - murdered before his eyes. What’s worse, they were traitors to the crown. At least that’s what he hears the village folk saying moments before he is whisked away to the castle of Highkeep. There he finds himself before the aged King Alginor, a man brought to a boil by his very presence.

Not the worst but not the best I’ve ever listened to. Story had the opportunity to be great. It’s like all the pieces were there but it wasn’t put together correctly. I’d say if you haven’t found anything else this is ok, but it’s ok only.

It's been three years since Aren seized the Ember Blade. Three years since they struck the spark they hoped would ignite the revolution. But the flame has failed to catch. The Krodans have crushed Ossia in an iron grip of terror. The revolution seems further away than ever. Far in the north, the Dawnwardens seek to unite the fractious clans of the Fell Folk and create a stronghold from which to retake their land. But even if they can overcome the danger of treachery from within, they still have to contend with the dreadknights.

Tedious and a chore to finish
Revisado: 07-16-23
I almost gave up on this book so many times. It just wasn’t getting better. It began to get tedious with betrayal after betrayal. Poorly written compared to the first book and I just have a hard time liking any character enough to care if they lived or died. The final ending was good but it showed the author can write, why he waited for the last 30 minutes of the book to be good I don’t know.

Very predictable
Revisado: 06-24-23
All in all the series was good however it all became way to predictable. Somewhere around halfway through the 3rd book I literally had guessed every aspect of what was to come. The author had a good story but the main character constantly falling for traps/tricks got tiresome. Honestly had I known the first book would be written and end this way I’m not certain I would’ve started the series.

Painful to finish
Revisado: 10-18-21
This book was very painful to get through. The story just never developed and the main characters inner struggle was infuriatingly annoying anytime it came up. This book is somewhere around 29 hours and honestly think it could be shortened to 10 hrs and you would end up with the same relevant information. It had tons of inner monologue and dead end unnecessary parts to the story. It’s a shame because I think the story the author is going for is or at least could be interesting if it wasn’t filled with so much fluff. The last 4 hours were about the only interesting parts. If book two starts out and continues how this book ended it might end up a 4 star review but the first 25 of this one were just hard to get through. Only reason it got 2 stars and not 1 was the narrator was excellent. I normally listen to 4-5 books in this genre a month, so I know good ones from bad. If you get it be prepared for a long annoying first 25 hours.

Underwhelming ending
Revisado: 08-07-21
This seems like a bargain and was somewhat interesting but the ending really isn’t a ending. It feels very incomplete. The story was predictable and drug on and on. I can’t recommended the series as a whole. If I could do it again I would’ve passed on it.

Ridiculous Premise
Revisado: 01-03-21
The author may have had a really good first book to a series if he would’ve spend half or more of the first book developing the hero. He rushed his character into becoming a Norseman to the point it was offensive to the reader to be expected to believe this.
Here is Summary of what I mean for people who may want to read this review before purchasing the book.
Hero is an orphaned who lives in England and is raised Christian by the village who took him in. Vikings come. Kill villagers. Take the boy hero who’s is a teenager now bc he can somehow understand their language. Within days or weeks, the book doesn’t say but it’s an offensively short amount of time. The hero is now a Northman who can fight like a professional, believes in the Norse Gods and knows all their history’s, doesn’t believe in the Christian god and starts killing Englishman.
Had the author made this change of character take place over say years, everything else in the story would’ve been ok. That was just lazy writing.
Two sentences could’ve done this. The Norseman left with the hero to return to their homeland. Years later they are back and he is with them and now our hero’s story begins. Done- makes sense now.

Great series but
Revisado: 08-27-20
I just happened upon this series and got hooked after book one. Book 5 was great as all the others were also. I just hope there ends up being a book 6 but I’m hearing this is the last. The only reason I can’t give it 5 stars overall is once the book ends, there are still quite a few loose ends or unanswered questions. While authors don’t have to answer all questions when ending a series, a few of these absolutely should have been.

Historia
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

Painful at times
Revisado: 07-16-20
As someone who listens to 10-15 fantasy books a year this one was just flat out hard to get through. I was 2/3 through the 30 hour book before I could figure out which character was which. It’s was very confusing and some story lines just didn’t make sense. Even now finished with the book there were point of view characters in the first 5-6 hours that I have no idea what happened to their storylines. I don’t know if they were the same characters at the end of the book and I was so confused I missed it or if they stopped altogether. I also noticed that the author had to use the word “shrug” 100,000 times in the book. It was like his favorite word. I decided to give at least the second book a chance to see if it gets better and I swear within the first 3 minutes of the book he has used the work “shrug” 8 times. If you’re on the fence about this book I would suggest skipping it.

Do not listen to the bad reviews over the narrator. The story is great and I didn’t want to stop listening to it. I didn’t mind the narrator at all. Just because he could’ve been better doesn’t mean he was bad. Well worth a credit.
