Historia
The Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency, consciousness, and intelligence. In looking closely, we see that plants, rather than imitate human intelligence, have perhaps formed a parallel system.

Insightful. Interesting. I absolutely consumed, “The Light Eaters”!! It struck the right balance of scientific interest coupled with personal experiences and observations.
The pace and tone of the reading was enjoyable, as well. Give it a listen, you won’t regret it!

Historia
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity.

Gift Economy
Revisado: 01-11-25
I will start with how I sought this book out because I was already familiar with the author. I have enjoyed so many of her works and this short book just what I needed…a reminder to be thankful. Her voice is comforting, and her explanation for the “gift economy” being well-supported through her ecological research was sound.
Kimmerer’s lived experiences expertly weaved throughout her writing style which is deeply supported by her scientific background is what keeps me coming back. Most scholars demand science be written in an impersonal tone to be clearly unbiased and objective, so even a hint of emotion is highly frowned upon. This concept makes reading scientific works dry at times, even if the author was incredibly passionate about their subject. I understand the importance of research articles being published how they are, but I greatly appreciate scientific writers using a separate platform to broaden the discussion and make it more accessible to everyone.

Have you ever thought that if only you could change something about the way you looked, your life would be better? But the truth is that even if you were to magically attain the “perfect” body right now, your problems wouldn’t be solved. Because body image issues are never just about the body. Body image issues are always about something deeper, and they always serve some kind of purpose.

Insightful and thoughtful provoking book that made me challenge long-held beliefs and internal dialogue that I came to realize probably began from external sources that I adopted over-time to be my own passive voice.

Historia
Perhaps the most influential science book ever written, On the Origin of Species has continued to fascinate for more than a century after its initial publication. Its controversial theory that populations evolve and adapt through a process known as natural selection led to heated scientific, philosophical, and religious debate, revolutionizing every discipline in its wake. With its clear, concise, and surprisingly enjoyable prose, On the Origin of Species is both captivating and edifying.

If you’re a student in the biological sciences or even just an amateur naturalist with an inquisitive heart this book is such a foundational read. I really enjoyed the narration… much more than my own voice in my head when I first read this during my undergrad! ;)

Historia
"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering," says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork - all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach's 20 years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.

Good premise, only okay execution
Revisado: 10-13-23
The content was worth the dry reading. The narrator was okay, but it was so monotone at times that I would mentally disconnect from the message the author was trying to convey. Overall, worth the read, but I wish I would’ve just bought a hard copy to read.

Historia
The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Truthful accounts
Revisado: 08-17-23
Sometimes when listening to people describe their experiences, I feel they try & focus on mostly the positives omitting the trials/negatives. This book goes there. None of the difficulties of being a ranger were avoided or omitted to make it more palatable for the audience. Others have complained that this made the book difficult to enjoy, but I feel the opposite. It was refreshing to hear the truth of this ranger’s experiences (& that of her friends). I have been in the backcountry of some of the places described to conduct research & I can’t imagine working there daily like they do. When I tell people about Alaska all they want to talk about was how cool my experiences must’ve been, but the reality is that it’s a truly wild place with real threats all around (and I hope it stays that way for the record). Hearing about the life & work of Ranger Kale Schaffer was incredible and I think the author did a great job telling his (& Mary’s) stories. I truly felt like I knew them myself by the end of the book. I would highly recommend this to anyone, but especially to anyone considering a career in the NPS.

Tom Papa is a little worried about you. You seem stressed, overworked, and, frankly, a little mixed up. Everyone is fighting an overwhelming feeling that things are getting worse, that we should be doing more, that we're not good enough. Well, life isn't perfect. There have always been problems, and there always will be. You can fight for the things you believe in, you can work really, really hard, but you shouldn't lose track of the fact that while you're doing all that, life is flying by at lightning-fast speed.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

I enjoyed how Sapiens reviews the history within the genus homo. It was fascinating to hear the author’s take, but as others have mentioned a little more analysis would’ve been nice. Overall, a great book. The narrator, Derek Perkins had a nice cadence & a soothing voice which made this book a relaxing way to finish off an evening.

Revisado: 07-20-23
This book was a joy to listen to. Dr. Simard wove a beautiful story about how interconnected the forest is through an approachable description of her scientific research through the years. She also shared her life experiences alongside her journey through science … which was very impactful for me being in the early stages of what I hope will be as beautiful a journey as hers. This book was so inspirational!
