Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Reality Check
Revisado: 11-15-23
Wow. It is so easy to admire celebrities from afar, believing their lives are perfect. indeed, at first glance, I wanted to think, "Why are you complaining about your Mother, she made you rich!" However, once delving into the complexity of their relationship, one sees how much the author had to endure, making me fully agree with her decision to give up acting in the end. Heartfelt and raw, thank you for telling your truth.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A Beautiful Story of Reminiscing
Revisado: 04-13-23
This book was brilliant. Evocatively starring an old house as a central character, Patchett weaves a deeply felt tale of family, hurt, overcoming cuts and healing in a tale of lives as beautiful as they are complicated.

Most of us have times when, if we are honest, we’d admit to feeling like our lives are embarrassingly small and insignificant. Times when it seems like we’re going through a whole lot of pain and striving without much to show for it. Like our daily pursuits don’t really matter in the long run. At times like that, we can’t help wondering if we really matter - to the world or even to God. In Chasing Vines, Beth Moore gives us a new hope, revealing the abundant secrets of a fruitful, Kingdom-building, God-pleasing life.

She's Leading me to Christ
Revisado: 03-15-23
I have been struggling through the Bible now, reading it from page one for 9 months now. Admittedly, it is so confounding that I struggle to continue. Beth Moore has a way of explaining scripture in a way that makes it relevant and leaves me hungering for more.

Profound, real, sublime.
Revisado: 02-18-23
It took me a long time to not hate the way the author read this book. Having never "heard" Anne LaMott, I didn't realize how droll her voice was. It's almost as if she is bored by her profound revelations, as if they are such an everyday occurrence they no longer strike her as important.
However, after Chapter 8, where she starts talking about God, and pulling everything together, I appreciate her imperfection.
This book is filled with overwhelming beauty, reality, grace, poignancy. It is uplifting. It is spiritual.
" The opposite of faith is certainty" floored me, and " You are already pre-approved. "
I look forward to listening to this book again.

Historia
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

You Live in the Desert With Him
Revisado: 02-03-23
Abbey's descriptions of the gorgeousness of the desert are so evocative, I'm surprised the tourists he hates haven't overtaken every pinnacle. But then again, doubtful those same persons would be interested in such a treatise on the area outside Moab. Beautifully written, and the voice is spot on.

When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

I can only imagine the difficulty when discovering your God fearing family isn't at all what He would've intended and the struggle inherent in coming to grips with it. Julia Whelan does a perfect job narrating this harrowing tale of love, hate and redemption.

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Inspiring
Revisado: 01-29-23
This book inspired me so much when I read it over a decade ago, that I left a relationship, began seeing a therapist and lived in the wilderness solo.
Beautifully told, the story of dealing with the death of her mother is liberating.

Historia
In a powerful and gripping debut, Rachel Aviv raises fundamental questions about how we understand ourselves in periods of crisis and distress. Drawing on deep, original reporting as well as unpublished journals and memoirs, Aviv writes about people who have come up against the limits of psychiatric explanations for who they are. Animated by a profound sense of empathy, Aviv’s exploration is refracted through her own account of living in a hospital ward at the age of six and meeting a fellow patient with whom her life runs parallel—until it no longer does.

Dull, slow, disjointed
Revisado: 01-29-23
Although I appreciate what the author is trying to do here, this book was so disjointed, I had trouble following her intentions. It sounded so compelling! I hope she continues her studies and even continues writing, finding more interesting ways to tell others' stories.

Saved My Relationship
Revisado: 01-29-23
Before I found this book, I was so critical of my significant other of 20 years, I was contemplating finally leaving. However, when a prayer to God placed this book in my line while working at Amazon, I bought the audio book and listened.
Putting into place what I learned, I immediately began to fall in love again, culminating finally in a wedding that I know will last to eternity.
