Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
Charles Casillo studies Monroe’s life through the context of her times - in the days before feminism. Before there was adequate treatment for bipolar disorder. Starting with her abusive childhood, this biography exposes how - in spite of her fractured psyche - Marilyn managed to transform each celebrated love affair and each tragedy into another step in her journey towards immortality. Casillo fully explores the last two years of her life, including her involvement with both John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, and the mystery of her last day.

Historia
A down-to-earth global pop star. A deeply spiritual, cerebral powerhouse. A famously outspoken introvert. For her millions of fans, and the few unacquainted, defining rock luminary Alanis Morissette is an exercise in dichotomies and nuance. And though her most formidable traits are seemingly at odds with one another, they are, oddly enough, completely emblematic of all of us: complex, conflicting, and, most importantly, ever evolving. With her striking command of language and profound emotional fluency, the 46-year-old covers an enormous amount of personal ground with listeners.

Self absorbed
Revisado: 08-13-22
I have always liked her music and her lyrics are clever, but every time I see her interviewed, she just seems very very self absorbed. I don’t even know what else to say. I still like the music…

Historia
A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

funniest American novel since Catch-22, Portnoy
Revisado: 03-10-18
The first year that the British prize Man Booker prize was open to an American , Beatty won it and he won with a humororous novel.
It's been decades since any truly funny book won it or any major literary prize.
the book is a satiric look at racism in America and the mere reference to anything about race seems to be a warning for some readers that is not going to be funny. but the first section of the book , the prologue in the form of a brilliant monologue that touches all levels of erudition and use of language, is about as funny and amusing and richly written fictional prose in the last 50 years. the book doesn't keep up that pace of laugh out loud lines and scenes throughout but it is very richly imaginative and very amusing throughout. The narrator does a great job. The opening monologue is so great it could work as a stand-alone one person show on Broadway or Off-Broadway and get rave reviews and win a Tony for any actor or producer smart enough to license the rights to mount it as a one-person show.

entertaining mildly, nothing like his best work
Revisado: 07-30-17
if you read interviews it seems that the historical novelist who is his co-author wrote the bulk of the language and prose and he played role in creating the technical details but it seems the actual language is just not anywhere near his other work. they collaborated on the story and from the ending they presumably hope to make it a series. unfortunately it became a best-seller he's likely to do it.. And that's steering him away from better work.
his earlier and very complicated work from his middle and later periods always had remarkable prose and a great deal of narrative tension that he build into it .
this is pretty pedestrian work

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

Historia
Atlanta, 1974: It's Kate Murphy's first day on the job, and the Atlanta Police Department is seething after the murder of an officer. Before the day has barely begun, she already suspects she's not cut out to be a cop. Her male uniform is too big, she can't handle a gun, and she's rapidly learning that the APD is hardly a place that welcomes women. Worse still, in the ensuing manhunt she'll be partnered with Maggie Lawson, a cop with her own ax to grind.

well-narrated taut thriller marred by caricatures
Revisado: 05-14-16
Atlanta prided itself on being this town too busy to hate even before black political leaders took over jn the 1970s and so the extreme bigotry of every single white male cop seems a bit forced. but the novel is interesting and reasonably well written and it brings you inside the world of women police officers in the 1970s
