Historia
New York, 1998. Santiago Larrea, a wealthy Argentine diplomat, is holding court alongside his wife, Lila, and their daughter, Paloma, a college student and budding jewelry designer, at their annual summer polo match and soiree. All seems perfect in the Larreas’ world—until an unexpected party guest from Santiago's university days shakes his usually unflappable demeanor. The woman's cryptic comments spark Paloma’s curiosity about her father’s past, of which she knows little. Paloma is determined to learn more about his life in the years leading up to the dictatorship of 1976.

I learn so much from each of William Kent Krueger’s novels. This time I discovered the complexities of living along the Mexican border and the challenges of handling those seeking sanctuary from lives most of us cannot fathom. As always, Cork O’Connor discovers much as he strives to protect those he values.

Historia
In July 1913, 25-year-old Annie Clements had seen enough of the world to know that it was unfair. She’s spent her whole life in the copper-mining town of Calumet, Michigan, where men risk their lives for meager salaries - and had barely enough to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. The women labor in the houses of the elite and send their husbands and sons deep underground each day. When Annie decides to stand up for herself and the entire town of Calumet, nearly everyone believes she may have taken on more than she is prepared to handle.

THIS STORY WILL STICK WITH YOU!
Revisado: 08-03-24
I could not stop listening to this novel! My cousins recommended it because our great-grandparents lived and worked in the copper mine of Upper Michigan, fortunately a decade before the 1913-14 strike. The author paints such a vivid portrait of the people and places in the novel that I understand the situation much better. My uncle told me that most of the pennies currently in circulation come from the copper mine on which the story is based. I certainly hope this novel becomes a limited series on Netflix, Prime, or PBS Masterpiece Theater. It’s that good!

Historia
Two years into World War II, Britain is feeling her losses: The Nazis have won battles, the Blitz has destroyed cities, and U-boats have cut off the supply of food. In an effort to help housewives with food rationing, a BBC radio program called The Kitchen Front is holding a cooking contest - and the grand prize is a job as the program’s first-ever female co-host. For four very different women, winning the competition would present a crucial chance to change their lives.

This should be a PBS series!
Revisado: 07-27-24
Rich, multifaceted characters motivated by real problems during a challenging period of history—THE KITCHEN FRONT reminds readers why historical fiction is such an essential genre of literature. I learned so much about food rationing in rural Great Britain during WW1. And the vivid storytelling of this audiobook made me feel as if I were watching a PBS Masterpiece Theatre Series in my head. I’m definitely going to find more audiobooks by this author!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Historia
Critically acclaimed, perennial New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell (Agincourt, The Fort, the Saxon Tales) makes real history come alive in his breathtaking historical fiction. Praised as "the direct heir to Patrick O'Brian" (Agincourt, The Fort), Cornwell has brilliantly captured the fury, chaos, and excitement of battle as few writers have ever done—perhaps most vividly in his phenomenally popular novels following the illustrious military career of British Army officer Richard Sharpe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Bernard Cornwall certainly knows how to tell a story and how to make Richard Sharpe a true underdog that keeps the listener cheering all the while. I also appreciated learning how the Redcoats fought in India in 1805.
