Historia
Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way. But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she's an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it).

I'm an enormous fan of Star Trek the Next Generation. This story touches me in ways that TNG did, but it's ideas and execution exceed even the very best of what Star Trek has to offer.
This story is a treasure.

Historia
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Sputters until it really gets going.
Revisado: 07-23-21
What is it? It's gritty fantasy with a well-built world and no gimmicks. Just solid characters with agency set loose on a backdrop of well-developed renaissance/medieval fantasy.
Some early chapters are better than others, but when the story begins in earnest, you'll be hooked.
Great characters, good setups for the long term narrative, excellent narration with absolutely zero complaints.

From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.

Historia
Dubbed "the American Tolkien" by Time magazine, number-one New York Times best-selling author George R. R. Martin is a giant in the field of fantasy literature and one of the most exciting storytellers of our time. Now he delivers a rare treat for listeners: a compendium of his shorter works, collected into two stunning volumes, that offers fascinating insight into his journey from young writer to award-winning master.

Masterful. Deserves far more recognition.
Revisado: 06-29-21
Martin's work on ASOIAF has undoubtedly overshadowed what would otherwise be considered some of the most creative SF short fiction that a reader could hope for.
Several of these stories could serve as the foundation for best-selling SF series.
Some narrators are better than others, but there's plenty to enjoy.

While this is a must-read for hardcore fans of the first-contact genre, there's little here apart from the core idea; it's a great idea, but this novel would have been better as short fiction.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Revisado: 06-29-21
Excellent ideas, and thrillingly executed.
There's a variety of flavor here, and the quality is consistent enough to make this THE SF short fiction collection. Nobody does it better than Chiang. He's hardly prolific, but when he publishes a story, it's ALWAYS excellent.
Great narration as well.

How do you stage a mutiny when you're only awake one day in a million? How do you conspire when your tiny handful of potential allies changes with each job shift? How do you engage an enemy that never sleeps, that sees through your eyes and hears through your ears, and relentlessly, honestly, only wants what's best for you? Trapped aboard the starship Eriophora, Sunday Ahzmundin is about to discover the components of any successful revolution: conspiracy, code - and unavoidable casualties.

Not Watts' best story.
Revisado: 06-29-21
While many of Peter's fans will enjoy this prequel story set in the universe of his best short fiction, I think many will find the tale more than a little derivative. The evil AI trope is better executed elsewhere. There are interesting ideas here, but Watts neglects to sufficiently flesh-out the world of the stories which precede this novella, at least in my opinion.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.
