The title does not match the book. And neither does the plot.

So this story is about a strong, independent, smart young woman who needs to participate in “the inheritance games” to secure her fortune.

Except the author forgot she was supposed to be strong or independent, and sometimes smart. The games were really just a scavenger hunt and the fortune wasn’t even on the line.

*Spoilers*
So somehow you can write a dozen times that she “never met Tobias Hawthorn a single time” then all of a sudden a sugar packet can remind her of an entire interaction she had with him as a child that she just forgot? Cmon now, what is this awful writing? Also, in a house full of art there wasnt a single picture of “harry” anywhere? She never asked for one? This “smart” girl never asked her lawyer nor bodyguard nor frenemy nor anyone else what happened to Emily? What a smart person. Also, Drakes big plan for murder was to run an suv off the road? When was the last time something like that worked? Oh yeah, it was a trap. And that smarty pants protagonist didnt figure that one out either.
At each obstacle, she constantly thought to herself what a smart person would do and then she would do the opposite. Unless there was a random puzzle, then she knows exactly where to look. Exactly what to do.
I was almost exhausted with the manufactured angst and conflict created because our protagonist refused to ask any questions about anything or anyone. It was even a plot point with her best friend. Of whom we never meet except through phone conversations.

Im going to be skipping the rest of these books. Dont wanna read thru the slog to find out that somehow shes related to them but somehow the dna test was wrong or that dumb secret we keep hearing about her mom but never discovered. Seriously keep it.

I really enjoyed the story. Really interesting concept and great execution. I hope max builds on this world and uses it again. Im excited to see how the big screen adapts it considering how badly they did wwz.

I read the description and really thought that the idea was interesting. Characters were written well in my opinion and I enjoyed the “world building” the author did. My gripe is that nothing really happens. If you are an avid book reader, you know exactly how this book will end about 6 chapters in. Obvious hints and lining up of characters throughout the book. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Crash”, this book is a descendant of that. But where Crash had you put the pieces together at the very end, this book spells everything out and leaves no surprises by the end. Not one. This would be better as a tv show that has 4 seasons until the fans start wishing for it to just get to the point. Yeah life is short and enjoy the time you have, a completely unoriginal and underperformed trope. Would not listen again.

That being said, the performance was 5/5, probably the only positive I’ll remember long term.

Really good read. I got to learn how racism in African evolved and what it was really like from someone who lives it. Hilarious stories about family, being an awkward teen, and even being a criminal. Id never known this stuff about him.

This book is written from the perspective of a handsome American who has made his wildest dreams come true...but he has no clue how. So this leads him to thinking that his own personal philosophies are the reason. That somehow the few quotes that stuck with him and events of his live have propelled him into fame and success. The stories aren't bad stories if your suspension of disbelief works, even entertaining if you aren't trying to find logic. Its just that friend that you know that has always had good luck, explaining to you, a hard worker, just how to get to his level. Wouldn't listen again, but won't speak badly about the book.

That was one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Not even being dramatic. The characters are shallow, the main character especially. The premise is immediately made dull by the author. Such a waste of time. I would have stopped sooner but i only had a bit to go. How dare you leave such a boring story off on a cliffhanger that isn’t even intriguing? Will be trying to refund this one!

*spoilers*
Ok so Martin and the gang are back. But this time our heroes are their kids. They lead the story decently well although they arent the most likeable kids. Brewster is much more dull than the smart mouthed maddie but together i didnt mind them. I really enjoyed the magicians that teach them. They were a great addition to the story.

The only downside was the villains. I really disliked them not in a villain way, but in an annoying character way. Jimmy was bad in a good way. So was the other psycho. But these two guys just didnt do it for me.

I hope in the next book the villain is a glitch in the system of sorts. And i also hope Phillip can stop being a wimp and tell brit the younger shes an asshole.

Overall, i still love this series!!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It wasn't a waste, but if not for audible I'd never had never payed for it.

If you’ve listened to books by Neil Gaiman before, how does this one compare?

n/a

Could you see Neverwhere being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I hope not. Probably one thats better on the page.

Any additional comments?

Richard Mahew wasn't a great lead. At times he was a baby, a coward, and a whiner. He didn't seem to grasp what was happening around him, not even if it meant his survival. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed parts of it, but it was just not very detailed.

I’ll be honest, I did not like this book. It moves very slowly and the main character is a bore.
The idea is a good one but underdeveloped.

SPOILERS*
I think the part with him sneaking back into the basement was complete bullshit. Theres no way that more than 5 ppl would be duped that easily. Our ears can tell that two ppl are walking.
We find out that dogs are also driven mad by the creatures but somehow the group goes out into the world and finds two more dogs that somehow never saw the creatures?
The most annoying part is that the creatures are never developed. I don’t need to know what they look like but shit you have to tell us where they come from at least. Or why they have the effect that they do.

All in all I’d never listen to this again for sure.
