Historia
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

Un-bee-lievably long
Revisado: 02-23-25
I feel this could have been summed up with a third of the story omitted. The stories within the story were mysterious and compelling the reader to continue listening in the hope of unraveling and connecting the dots but it just drags on and on. The incredible span only decreased my interest as it weaved and meandered everywhere. Talk about going down the rabbit hole!
I would have given 31/2 stars but there are no halves to give. The plot was indeed unique and intriguing but after hours of listening without enough coherence left me wanting it to get to the end. A novel should compel readers to be unsatisfied with it ending and wanting it to NOT end.
The performances were terrific though because the inflections and vocals were not distracting or annoying. Nice for a change.

PRETTY GOOD!
- De G C en 12-22-18
Easily fit into anyone’s schedule
Revisado: 02-03-25
Fairly short (would like a longer version in addition to this one) and similar to other hypnosis but the narrator’s voice is pleasant and the music not over bearing like some others.
Be realistic about your journey and remember, it was over a long period that brought you to your current weight (and likely bad eating habits); so don’t be discouraged that the results will also take a long period of time.
Listening before bed is a good way to submerge these concepts into your subconsciousness - it’s also soothing to listen to and might help you drift to sleep too.

Remarkable synchronization
Revisado: 01-23-25
Finally, a romance without the gag worthy traits in so many novels. Granted, the romance aspect is light, but interwoven throughout the story. Another huge factor in enjoying this novel is the narration; finally, all the voices enabled me to listen to the story rather than being distracted by screetchy, whiney or ineffective male/female sounding characters. Some narrators can’t do both sexes without distracting from the story- when a reader ‘hears’ a voice- it’s just right - including accents.
The story pulled me in at the airport; laying out a snippet of a backdrop and promising story ahead. And of course, there isn’t anyone who can’t relate to problems and/or tragedies. I wondered how it would weave in and the author does a grand job of that without spoiling the overall plot.
Violets family, being upper crust show their colors right away as does Violet- struggling as a young women troubled by the constraints of her culture and her desires to be true to herself. Strong-willed and intelligent, the classes for women at botanical schools impel her forward into a future she never dreamed possible for herself.
I like how the story develops a twist from her on. The culture in Nepal and the botanical connection was a surprise for me which kept me interested.
I also love how F. Valpy ties it all together at the end - or is it a commencement?
I even listened to all the credits. I recommend any of Fiona Valpys’ novels.

Not Forgotten; Little known people brought to the forefront
Revisado: 06-11-24
Stupendously written, bringing a humanized and compassionate reality to a maniacal, evil power. The story captivated me from the beginning; it was well written and for the most part the voices weren’t annoying. The accents brought a realistic atmosphere that made me imagine I was engaging with the characters.
The story takes you on a journey with the women and the families they were ripped from. I whine if I get a hangnail and yet the incredible sacrifices others endured reminds me their stories need to be told and retold so we don’t become complacent ( or has that shipped sailed already?)
I wasn’t crazy about Caroline’s character; was it the voice (the breathy swooning over Paul was a bit much for me), or was it the elitism? Haven’t put my finger on it, but truly she was a remarkable woman with her focus in the right place and deserves to be remembered.
I’ve heard for half a century, “Never again” but sadly we’re seeing much of the underpinnings surfacing again, so novels like these are beneficial and honor their memories too while ‘entertaining’ the reader
Well done. 10 stars.

Dog lovers and mystery- great entertainment
Revisado: 07-27-23
First the voices; so many narrators take away from the story by dubbing all the sexes and in this case species- but I found this novel was an exception and the various voices were not a distraction while listening.
Chihuahua’s are not my favorite breed but since I love dogs and mystery and wanted to listen to something on the lighter side this was just the ticket.
I also liked the weaving of Geri’s personal issues into the story without crashing the overall theme.
Each element woven in wasn’t over the top except for “Jimmy G” which may have been intended- but his character was weird. I guess it takes all kinds.
The entire story is “light” but you can guess that with a talking dog; Pepe’s accent and character always hinting at the obvious (like funny comments about hydrants being an instinctive distraction not a wise decision to be a prop) aides in the entertainment and also solving the mystery.
I’m hooked and look forward to hearing the rest of the series.
