Historia
In April 1940, the ninth Duke of Rutland died in mysterious circumstances in one of the rooms of his family estate, Belvoir Castle. The mystery surrounding these rooms holds the key to a tragic story that is played out on the brutal battlefields of the Western Front and in the exclusive salons of Mayfair and Belgravia in the dying years of la belle époque. Uncovered is a dark and disturbing period in the history of the Rutland family, and one which they were determined to keep hidden for over 60 years. Sixty years on, The Secret Rooms is the true story of family secrets and one man’s determination to keep the past hidden at any cost.

SING A SONG OF WHITE FEATHERS
Revisado: 03-23-25
Fascinating book. Very well investigated and written. The narrator does an excellent job. I'm thankful to the author for bringing this shameful incident to light. I doubt the current Duke of Rutland knew that a can of worms would be opened up by allowing the author access to Belvoir Castle muniments room. My mother always said "truth will out, usually when it's least wanted". She was usually right.
If one wants to know the actual history of John Manners, 9th Duke of Rutland, read this book. Oh what a tangled web we weave ...

Historia
In the secluded Dutch territory of Sleepy Hollow, nebbish schoolmaster Ichabod Crane competes with the town hero for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the 18-year-old daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party at the Van Tassel's farm one autumn evening, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, an apparition said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper snuffed out by a stray cannonball.

Great narration. There are very regrettable parts of this book that aren't acceptable today. Overall a good story, skipping the objectionable bits. The excellent narration saved this for me.

Historia
Stitch by perfect stitch, Andrew Garvie makes exquisite dolls in the finest antique style. Like him, they are diminutive, but graceful, unique, and with surprising depths. Perhaps that's why he answers the enigmatic personal ad in his collector's magazine. Letter by letter, Bramber Winters reveals more of her strange, sheltered life in an institution on Bodmin Moor, and the terrible events that put her there as a child. Andrew knows what it is to be trapped; and as they knit closer together, he weaves a curious plan to rescue her.

DISTURBING ADULT CONTENT
Revisado: 07-31-24
Didn't finish it. I would've returned it for a refund had I purchased it. From the first chapter, the story went into disturbing same sex encounters that I don't want to read about. This could've been a good story without the adult content. I'm not a prude. Rape and sexual abuse aren't plot devices. No need to wonder why this was included in my membership. Probably not a novel that will make much money.

Abridged Audio book
Revisado: 04-20-24
I greatly enjoyed this audio book. The original novel is 14+ hours. Lots of details were cut but I read others struggling to finish the full length book, so I got the abridged version, which was perfect for me. Jodie Foster did a great job on the narration. I recommend this book if you liked the movie but don't want to dive into the long unabridged version.

Historia
When Anne's friend Kevin asks her to spend the summer at Grayhaven, his parents' new home in Pennsylvania, it seems like the ideal way to complete the book on contemporary literature they have been working on. And Grayhaven, an authentic medieval manor, proves to be nothing short of miraculous. But at the end of three weeks Anne realizes that she and Kevin have not added one new sentence to their book. What is it about this house that is so disturbing?

Not my favorite Victoria Holt
Revisado: 03-20-24
I read Victoria Holt books in high school. This particular one didn't age well. I didn't like the narration. It grated on my ears. This is included in Audible for no credits ... I wouldn't have purchased it. I'll be listening to other free Victoria Holt books and hopefully they will be better than this one. I think her period novels aged better.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Well worth a listen
Revisado: 12-20-23
I struggle with Shakespeare, as many do. I studied the Bard in high school and truly love his prose but it's wonderful to listen to this adaptation as well. Great writing and narration. I enjoyed this novel and plan to read more by the authors.

Historia
Actor David Suchet recalls his experience of playing Agatha Christie's world-famous detective, Hercule Poirot, for almost a quarter of a century. In the summer of 2013 David Suchet filmed his final scenes as Hercule Poirot. After 24 years in the role, he will have played the character in every story that Agatha Christie wrote about him (bar one, deemed unfilmable) and he will bid adieu to a role and a character that have changed his life.

Historia
Holly Sherwin has been a struggling playwright for years, but now, after receiving a grant to develop her play Witching Night, she may finally be close to her big break. All she needs is time and space to bring her vision to life. When she stumbles across Hill House on a weekend getaway upstate, she is immediately taken in by the mansion, nearly hidden outside a remote village. It’s enormous, old, and ever-so eerie—the perfect place to develop and rehearse her play.

Mediocre at best ...
Revisado: 10-05-23
Poor plot, characters that left me cold and unmoved, ridiculous number of chapters, in need of a VERY good editor. It's a shame that the Jackson estate authorized Ms. Hand to pen a follow up to 'The Haunting of Hill House'. Shirley Jackson was the master of subtlety. Ms. Hand doesn't know the meaning of the word.
Not one of these characters is likeable and it was painful to slog through to the bitter end. The singing and sound effects were unnecessary, outright embarrassing at times. Those black hares were laughable. This book had a few promising moments in the midst of poorly written schlock.
'A Haunting on the Hill' comes off as a pathetic money grab. An attempt to exploit the success of the original novel. Sadly Ms. Hand will never write brilliant words such as these:
"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against the hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone"
Ms. Hand completely failed to capture Hill House. Shirley Jackson's character Eleanor said it best: "we who walk here, walk alone". Yes, they do.

ABRIDGED VERSION IS DISAPPOINTING
Revisado: 09-11-23
This wonderful story was butchered for this abridged version. I am very disappointed. The sound was horrid. Adrienne Barbeau wouldn't be my first choice for narrator. This series needs to be re-produced, full length. Jennifer Ikeda is my recommendation for narration. DO BETTER AUDIBLE !!!
